Poll Puzzles in RE4R is the first AA/AAA game in over 10 years that doesn't take you for a brainless child. (28 votes)

Agree 29%
Disagree 64%
I can't stand puzzles 7%

So, i am only on Chapter 5, and from the few puzzles that i've completed, i thought they were all excellent. I don't remember how they were in the original game, so i assume many puzzles are new? If so, i am kinda impressed that Capcom had the balls to add puzzles that you couldn't complete while being stoned (especially after RE8 lmao).

I am so tired of seeing brainless "puzzles" in most mainstream games nowadays. Its literally aimed at 2-10 year olds, while the game is rated M for the most part. Makes no sense that every developer is taking their players for a bunch of incompetent dumbasses. Ragnarok did this so damn poorly, its kinda laughably pathetic, especially if you look at all the excellent puzzles older GoW titles had.

If you're incapable of adding a cool AND at least a semi challenging puzzle, don't waste my time by asking me to move a ball into a circle shaped hole, and call it a puzzle. ffs😣

As someone who plays a ton of puzzle games, the ones in RE4R didn't even register for me.

It had some of the easiest puzzles in the series.

Thats because U just play dumb games that dont requires more complex puzzles.

Give Outer Wilds a try. Its really good game with great puzzle design.

Or if you want to dumb down a bit give Zelda BotW a try. By no means a great game in my opinion but the puzzles inside those hundreds of shrines does require some creative solutions.

We are already 10 years into the AMD box era, and only now are you realising the games are moronic rubbish?

Outer Wilds is not an AA/AAA game, but a niche indie title that was very well reviewed. Of course indie titles have good puzzles, they're not the ones aiming for mass appeal.

I've been bitching about brainless puzzles for a while, so i am far from just realising it now. Its just that after you play Ragnarok, and see what the developer considers are "puzzles", shit's insulting.

Im on my second playthrough.

This is probably one of the best third person action game today. put any sony movie game to shame. put any other third person game to shame.

This and Doom Eternal are by far best games of current decade.

The puzzles were ok, not challenging but not too easy.

@hardwenzen: lot of people will say they're geniuses that solved the puzzles in re4r with one eye closed and and a hand tied behind their backs, but I did find some of the puzzles in re4r a bit difficult. I mean, none of them were hard but it wasn't brainless like in the past. You still have to take a bit of time to do them. I think for me the hardest puzzle is the one by the lake, where you have to spin the circles until you get the pattern. Its mostly trial and error and actually a bit annoying.

Thought almost all of the puzzles in the game were very easy. The only puzzles I struggled with a bit was those green displays in the lab, which are apparently harder on the difficulty I played at (hardcore). And I played the whole game stoned.

The 🧩s weren’t difficult at all, but in this type of game, it’s not necessary for them to be difficult. Keep the action going with minimal 🧩s that can be challenging here and there, but don’t make it like a 🧩 from The Witness all of a sudden.

@Litchie: oh right, that one is one I remembered too. Not tough exactly, all of the puzzles in the game have a certain trick to it.

I didn't know puzzles difficulty went up with game difficulty too. I thought it was just the enemy AI got smarter, and your health bar / ammo decreased.

Its not about extremely difficulty of puzzles. I don't think we will ever see that kind of puzzles in an AAA game. But the ones that are there, they feel "right". You look at all previously released RE titles since RE5, and they're a god damn joke in comparison.

Yeah, was probably just me struggling to see the trick. Got a bit frustrated with it, stopped using my brain and just trial and errored that shit until I got it. :P Didn't help that there were more of them..

I don't think they changed all of the puzzles, just a few. The lab ones are the only ones I know that they changed.

Capcom shelved the first iteration of the remaster 2 years or so ago because it was too close to the original and ordered the studio to change things up a bit.

I assume that's when they added the ability to traverse and explore the lake making the game feel a bit open world-y similar to the first God of War and its lake. They also added the tickets with challenges on them to add more replayabilty.

A smart developer.

Would love it if RE9 was pretty open for exploration. I obviously don't want an open world game, but if there's some good exploration, hidden side bosses and such, it could be pretty nice.

ah interesting. i thought that lake bit could've influenced the semi-open ended start of uncharted lost legacy where you're driving round to different locations picking up clues and battling enemies to help you solve the various puzzles dotted around the map. didnt realise the lake bit wasn't in the original

lol its just a saying, as to say that they're not your average difficulty that you'd find in an AA/AAA title released in the last 10-15 years. its the kind of puzzles you will never find in an ubisoft game because they'd feel its simply too hard for their fanbase, and to them, being stuck on a puzzle is insulting, so they don't want this to happen under any circumstances

I didn't mind the puzzles but they didn't really stand out Either.

Hogwarts probably had better puzzles for a recent AAA game, though they got super repetitive in the side content.

I recently played through Entropy Centre, now there is a game with good puzzles

I love the combat system in this thing. Hardcore feels pretty good as well, not too easy or too difficult.

@Chutebox: Well there's the fish image Hexagon thing in Chapter 3-4. You add three pieces to a total of 9 tiles that can be spun in four different groups of three.

That's the hardest one.

Then in Chapter 1 there's a marble with a moth like pattern you put in a whole. Similarly in Chapter 4 in the church you toggle three different colour wheels to line up the moth.

Well, you're gonna unlock a harder difficulty (if you play on Hardcore, which I sincerely hope you do), so you'll probably want to do another playthrough. Then, if you want, you can try to get a better campaign rank to unlock shit. Then you have the mercenaries mode, which also is really fun. You got plenty game left.

(pretty much) All puzzles change depending on difficulty. The hexagon puzzle by the lake, the green computer maze/node screens, even the "puzzle" where you set the time as Ashley in Ch. 9 is different. It's 11:04 on easy and normal but 7:00 on hard and Professional.

I thought all of the puzzles were extremely easy except the hexagon on hard/pro difficulty. Holy shit that took a lot of thinking. On easy difficulty the hexagon puzzle is only like one one flip away.

RE2 puzzles were a lot harder and virtually impossible without googling. I prefer RE4 though. Just give me the 10/10 action without super difficult puzzles, thanks.

lol, what? Guess I'm a genius then as I didn't find a single puzzle in RE2R hard at all. Most of them the game flat out told you how to do.

"Virtually impossible" lol.. Stay away from puzzle games, dude. :P

@hardwenzen:

For me, it's the opposite. It feels like Capcom is simplifying puzzles more as they keep laying out remakes. Some of the most off putting puzzles I found where in RE2 and 3 remakes. I haven't finished RE4 Remake yet but so far, I really don't like the amount of events they cut from the original game.

* No boulder chase in the beginning.

* The boss fight with the giant cricket-like monster in the suspended cage is gone.

* No freight truck chase with Ashley driving.

* No chase from the giant Salazar automaton.

And I'm worried of finding more. I'm still going to finish it though. I'm just taking my time.

@nepu7supastar7: I miss those aspects of the game as well. When I played the original back in ‘05, those set pieces really made an impression on me. I have seen a lot of people praising the exclusion of a lot of the quick time events, but I miss them and the cinematic flair they brought. I thought RE4 balanced them out very well, whereas RE6, for example, made them a complete joke of an idea. I also can see why their exclusion helps with the pacing in the remake, but I still appreciated them in the original.

@Mozelleple112: My memory is a bit shaky, but I think I solved the hexagon puzzle on Hardcore in about 30 seconds without really thinking about it. I believe I only had to move three groups of tiles to solve it?

The only puzzles that took longer were the computer ones on the island, which you can still solve pretty quickly with trial and error.

@Planeforger:

The problem is if you make a wrong turn and mess it up. Happened a couple of times in my 5 runs of the game. It mostly only takes 5-10 seconds, but one time on professional I had to reset it twice because I just made it worse and worse.

But yeah it can always be solved in a few turns.

@Litchie: I absolutely hate puzzles, which is why I praise GOW/GOWR/RE4 over games with harder puzzles (well that and gameplay, story etc, etc. but puzzles is another reason)

I don't even remember the RE2 puzzles, but I remember I did have to google the password to the locker (I think it was CAP), and sure it was ringed out on a whiteboard which makes it extremely obvious once you know where to look, but I wasn't looking at whiteboards while being terrified of Mr. X on my heels.

I did spend hours running around wondering what to do.

I think RE8 had some annoying ones as well. Think you had to shoot something shiny from a tree or something. Like how the **** am I supposed to know it could be in the trees.

Also note: RE2R was my first ever RE game, so its logic wasn't familiar to me. Now I know I have to check trees, white boards, TV screens or what not.

RE4R puzzles are an absolute breeze and honestly cannot be called puzzles.

@Litchie: I think RE8 had some annoying ones as well. Think you had to shoot something shiny from a tree or something. Like how the **** am I supposed to know it could be in the trees.

Yeah, learned shooting down shit from trees in the original RE4. So I naturally looked for that in RE8.

I enjoyed the ones in the original more.
