Good news, Quake 2 remaster will be released today, apparently.
It's a game. That's good.

Thank you Phil! At a time when 7.99 > 49.99.
Phil, you truly are for the gamers! And for @SecretPolice
God dam that Quake 2 soundtrack has it's moments!
Anywho let's call a spade a spade here: rockstar are also correct. They are going to charge 50 bucks for a quick and dirty port and it will sell gangbusters. It's RDR after all. So why wouldn't they charge 50 bucks? It can also have a nice long tail in future sales.
Such is the market we live in.
Quake II also available on Xbox/PC Game Pass https://t.co/GTgh6qUtkFpic.twitter.com/IuVlb5Wz6G

Not really interested in buying either to be honest. I’ll probably give Quake II a whirl via Game Pass for a few kicks but it’s not really something that I’ll invest any large amount of time into. Just got way too many other games on the horizon that I’d rather spend time with.

Seems like this portion was missed by some.🙃
Or there was an edit…
So yea, free if you own it already. Which is fantatic as the Steam version was fucking garbage, didn't even have OST. (same with Quake 1 prior)
Meanwhile Cockstar and Sega delist the better originals and charge you through the shitter.
And you pay it, because the consumer is thick as pig shit. And CEOs know this.
Just as good if not better than the Quake remaster.
Very pleased. A rare feeling in gaming now.
It's also better than Metro. Which is great.
I will take Quake easily. Plus it comes with Quake II 64 for free. Thank you Phil for being so generous to the gaming community.
I got RDR for $9.89 on the 360 which runs at 4k on the SX so thank you for the BC Microsoft. I am actually surprised they didn't delist the 360 version prior to this. They took the PS3 version off PS Now/PS+ prior to this.
Rockstar can keep their trash port with no multiplayer at $50. I wish nobody would buy this so Rockstar would see that this is not right. It'll sell well though, unfortunately.
Quake 1 is better.
My freind, not that big on Gman but realized he was unintentionally talking shit about you.
Shocking stuff.
Usually hate weapon wheels, but as a quick access inventory thing even with the M+K it works well here.
2nd best FPS Game I played. Though I'm not the biggest fan of it Right now, I will definitly give it a try though, because why not?
@uninspiredcup:
Nice. Quake 2 is still an amazing game to this day. Yeah it is very different from Quake 1 but it's an awesome shooter.
BTW what are your thoughts on the Rise of the Triad remaster? I never played the game before. Do you recommend that I try it out?
@AcidTango: It's not as good as something like Duke3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Doom 64 etc.. etc.. so if you haven't played one of those, those are money better spend and all have good modern re-releases now.
But if you're happy with a goodish, not amazing old-shooter with some weird aspects and Nightdive so generally auto-good, yea, go for it.
Like £14 one way or another, so get your moneys worth regardless, just refund it if it's not your thing, figure out fairly fast wither it's for you or not.
Since I already got the PC version technically, I'll buy the Switch version at a later date.
Gonna check out the Xbone version on GP.
Crazy how good they upgraded the visuals without fucking up the art-direction.
The new engine and lighting/shadows does wonders.
Might just be Nightdive Studios best work.
Started playing it and having a blast. Nightdive knows how to do remasters. And eventhough Half Life made every single FPS game that came before it obsolete, i can still find way more fun in this than in say Doom or Quake 1. I feel having objectives helps over "go find some random key in this labyrinthian maze I created" design.
Oh and they added muzzle flash, which was the one QOL change that I wanted.

Or Rockstar wouldn't and think "I guess no one wants more Red Dead" or "or more ports of our classic". Even Nintendo is like this with the F-Zero franchise.
I agree. We should be grateful for being ripped off.
We don't want to scare them into lowering the price.

I should have stated I wish nobody on PS4 would buy this. I have way less issue with the Switch version considering the hardware in the Switch. The game was already playable through PS Now on PS4 and they removed it. Yes it was streaming, but it was a way to access the game on the PS4.
I would hope they would see the issue is with their no effort port. RDR 1 and 2 both sold amazing. If they are going to bring a game to a new console and charge $50 for it, at least put a little effort into it. There is no way this port should cost $50. Look at what Nintendo did with Metroid Prime Remastered. They actually reworked a lot of the graphics in the game and charged $40.
Never bothered much with pickups before but it's funny can active quad-damage and take out a boss in less than 5 seconds with the chaingun.

Meanwhile at Nightdive:
working hard to give great games to more people.
Quake 2 Remaster looks seriously shit compared to the original with NVIDIA RTX.
Except it looks way better than the Nvidia RTX port.
Correct. It elevates the original keeping the art-style.
RTX looks like a metallic shiny mess. Doesn't even look like the same game anymore.
And that's ignoring the QOL improvements.
Anyone who thinks this looks better is living in lala land. Even the basic mood of the game is non-existent. Looks closer to Serous Sam.
Correct. It elevates the original keeping the art-style.
RTX looks like a metallica shiny mess. Doesn't even look like the same game anymore.
Basically a tech demo. And like many graphic whores, they don't know what art-direction actually is. Just turn da ENB up wowowowwo
Don't me wrong here, despite my PC master race predisposition, and loving graphics, I'm not quite @BassMan (sorry dude). I play old games and I appreciate old graphics and art styles. I still regularly play old retro games, even ones going back 40 years.
I'm not nocking the game, it's cool. But saying Quake 2 remastered looks better is just ludicrous.

Absolutely are knocking the game.
The art-style in RTX looks nothing like Quake 2 due to the lighting system and over-metallic surfaces. Wither you prefer it, well, that's up to you. But it looks nothing like how Quake 2 is suppose to look. aesthetically is completely fucks up the art-direction.
Quake 2: Remaster updates assets (optionally) with superior lighting, textures and geometry while keeping it all in line with the original art-style.
Basically jumped it 10-15 years head in appearance while RTX looks like an ENB mod someone applied. The kind of shit I see in Skyrim with big titted anime warriors walking around in complet ejuxtaposition with the rest of the game world.
What they have done takes far more skill, updating an old ass game but keeping it authentic to how it should look as originally envisioned.
Absolutely are knocking the game.
I'm nocking consoles, not the game. This is after all the 'System Wars' forum is not? We know full well that this type of path tracing on Quake 2 RTX wouldn't work on PS5 or Series X. It would be running at 10 fps at best.
It's just banter my dude.

While I love graphics, I am more about high performance while playing games. I can't stand low frame rates or games with technical issues that break immersion. I can enjoy games with lesser graphics, but I have my limits on how potato the graphics can be. I tried playing Celeste recently as it was added to Game Pass. I had avoided it because of the graphics, but I gave it a shot due to how well regarded the game is. From a gameplay perspective, it is my kind of game. However, I couldn't get into it due to the shit graphics. I would much rather play games like Ori or Hollow Knight that are the total package. So yeah, the gameplay alone can not carry a game for me. I need some pretty things on the screen to help immerse me.
Looks like a great re-master. Have Quake 1 remaster. Beat the original Quake back like 25 years ago. But even with the re-master graphics looked dated with Quake 1. But with Quake 2 it's different basically anything after 1998 when the second generation GPU's started to hit the market like Voodoo 2 is when the graphics started to get significantly better. Quake 2 was one of the first ones two show case second gen GPU's. I remember all the PC Hardware and PC Gaming magazines benchmarked Quake 2 to death on all the different GPUs at the time. It was to go to benchmark for GPUs. Don't know why some people still like Quake 1 over Quake 2. I will admit Quake 1 was unique when it came out graphically with it's Lovecraftian theme, even John Carmack stated that Quake 1 was "brown" every level seems to look brown with no diversity. Quake 2 took it to another level not just graphically. Ironically beat Quake 2 exactly 20 years ago in the summer of 2003.
Back to the re-master like that they kept the original look and feel with better textures, lighting, etc. without too much deviating from the original ambiance and look of the original. My type of re-master. I think changing the game too much takes it away from the the original art style and ambiance. Started playing expansion Reckoning about 7 years ago with mod to play it at 1080P but stopped at Unit 1. Perfect timing to go back and play the expansions with better graphics. I wonder how much of difference it really is the expansions since those were the ones I didn't play through. The new expansion made by Machine Games look good too.
It's sad the state of gaming where I am more excited about 25 year old re-master of a game then newer AAA games.
