Quake Champion Gameplay(PC) has a Pay Option for full game or F2P with one fix character only allows rentals

The character all have abilities and if you buy the whole game you get to play all the characters. Seem very similar to how Overwatch did except you can try one character for free.

Players who buy the Champion Pack — the de-facto full-price version of the game — will get Ranger and all the other Champions that the game launches with. Everyone else will be able to pay the in-game currency, called favor, to play other Champions for a finite period of time.

“I don’t want to use the word rent,” Willits said. “You do spend favor to have access to them for a limited amount of time, yes. But you don't spend any real money on it.”

Just how long you get to play other Champions, like the recently announced Nyx, is up in the air. It’s one of the many questions Willits and the team at id Software hope to answer during the closed beta, which is now open for sign-ups.

The annoying thing is, the gameplay looks great. Enjoy that Ranger model, you'll probably be seeing alot of him.

The game has a classic mod apparently much like Quake Live, which helps, but rented characters is completely wacky poo.

That map they are playing in that seems to be a remake of The Camping Grounds, although with slightly larger rooms for some reason.

So I'm guessing they were influence in someway for overwatch

It's essentially a restricted demo with no time limit for anyone considering the game.

Logically it's a very sound model for people trying to find out if they want to stay with the game for good.

I think it's a good idea. People can play the game with a set character and rent others for a limited time with in game credits. What is there to hate?

The potential proliferation of servers made of up clone classes. Aside from game-balance it isn't aesthetically pleasing to see the same clone model running around.

That's making the assumption that the majority of people will only play the game under its free 2 play model. It's a new Quake game (not really my cup of tea) and will sell on the name alone.

That's true. You can't really blame id Software for creating an arena shooter with abilities. Take a good look at arena shooters we have right now, they're dead. It's telling us that people don't really want another replication of classic arena shooter but might want something different.
