Not sure what to make of this. Always has plenty of mods that add content and update visuals. Doom 3 BFG sucked the balls.

More appeal to console gamers, I guess. Since their versions by and large suck.

Presumably if it's on The Switch, it will be extremely expensive. If not all versions, if they can get away with it.

Bethesda will reveal a “revitalized” version of Quake at QuakeCon 2021

Bethesda has revealed that a new version of the classic Quake game will be presented at QuakeCon 2021. This “revitalized” version of Quake is developed by MachineGames and id Software, and will feature additional content.

As the official schedule of QuakeCon 2021 states:

“Quake is back. In this special stream, John Linneman from Digital Foundry talks to Jerk Gustafsson of Machine Games about the title’s iconic legacy and what it meant to both of them. The pair will also discuss the additional content Machine Games have contributed to this revitalized edition.”

From the sounds of it, this new version of Quake will be a remaster and not a reboot or a remake. Or at least that’s what the description hints at.

Personally, I just hope that this revitalized edition of Quake is not a simple re-release with some new content. Since we’ve already gotten Quake 2 RTX, MachineGames and id Software should at least implement full ray/path tracing effects to it.

Bethesda will present this new version of Quake on August 20th.

I'm sure that'll be fine for Quake....

They actually already made Quake content and it was pretty decent.

Presumably all they are doing is making episodes. The mechanics and stuff were already perfected.

Hopefully whatever it is, is still like original Quake/Doom and not a wave shooter.

@pelvist: From the jist of it, sounds like they are doing almost nothing to it beyond some QOL stuff and maybe new episode+

Wouldn't be surprised if they just add the one they already made above.

Down with that, as long as it's not some super cynical dickheady Switch type price, where they purposefully remove the OG off Steam/GOG etc.. to limit user options.

I actually hope it stays true to original and does not become a wave shooter. Ion Fury was the best old school style game I have played in a long time.

Quake 1 was masterpiece but 2 to onwards become more and more focus on Multiplayer.

@ghosts4ever: Quake (1) practically set the foundation for FPS multiplayer Ghost lad. Doom had MP, but it was Quake that was the big Stone Cold Steve Austin.

It's clearly that, more so than Quake 2 that influenced Quake 3 and much later titles such as Quake Champions.

The main sequel influenced by Quake 2 was Quake 4, which is single player focused.

Quake 1 was primarily SP game that happened to found MP.

Quake 3 didnot even had a SP its like id think lets make Quake exclusively for MP.

Quake was not a sci fi strogg game. it was dark fantasy style FPS. then they made it MP focus to this day even latest Quake champion is MP only.

Quake 4 doesnot count. it was raven game.

Quake (1) was primarily played for MP. Even though it's SP was stellar masterful design.

This is generally the same case with Quake 2, but it's Quake that changed the focus.

So yes, Quake being focused on "MP" is attributed more to Quake 1 than Quake 2.

Mechanically, aesthetically, Quake 3 is aiming for Quake 1 over Quake 2. It takes stuff from all sources, including Doom, but it's primarily a successor to Quake 1.

I hope it's a proper remaster with a new engine instead of using the Quake 1 engine. A Quake remaster with the id Tech 7 would be great.

Eh, would rather see a single-player story-driven Quake V (I did love Quake IV) but if a Quake 1 remake is essentially the same thing I'm all for that.

I wouldn't say no to a new Enemy Territory game; class-based Strogg vs Humans multiplayer is good fun.

I've always liked the Machinegames games. People want to nitpick the new Wolfenstein games, but they're just good action games. Never took issue with the controls, either.

They're former Starbreeze devs, makers of the Riddick games. They excel at gritty, dark, but ultimately fun and awesome action games. Would be cool if Bethesda and Machinegames got the Riddick license and made something.

Doom and Doom Eternal are as much true Doom games as R6V is a true R6 game. I tried to play Doom Eternal 3 times now, just a few weeks ago with the RTX patch in fact, but get bored and moved onto something else each time. Its Doom in name only just like Doom 2016 was and just like Doom 2016, its not for me.

I agree. Doom and Doom Eternal have Cover System, Regen health, Iron sights, Walking in straight line, they are slow paced COD clones. they are only 4 hour long and have 2 weapon limit.

If Machine Games is rumored to be making it then I'm already going to manage my expectations. At very least I would want to see id Software co-develop it with them so maybe they can help Machine Games mature as a studio. Wolfenstein had horrible gunplay and manual pick-ups just didn't give it the fluidity that the modern Doom games or Rage 2 had.

Update for fannies -

An unknown Quake game has been rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), days after plans for a series revival appeared to leak via a QuakeCon schedule.

The new ESRB listing for ‘Quake’ says the title will release for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.

The rating summary describes a scenario that could apply to any number of Quake games, so it’s not clear if this is the “revitalized edition” hinted at last week, or a re-release of the original on new platforms.

“This is a first-person shooter in which players assume the role of a soldier that travels through time to stop an evil force from destroying humanity,” the description reads.

“Players traverse through maze-like medieval enviornments and use shotguns, nail guns, and grenade launchers to kill various enemies (e.g., zombies, demonic forces, scorpions, humans) in frenetic run-and-gun combat.

“Battles are accompanied by gunfire sounds, screams of pain, and large explosions. Large blood-splatter effects occur frequently, and several attack cause enemies to explode into bloody chunks. Some areas depict mutilated body parts on the ground or falling from ceilings.”

June 22 marked the 25th anniversary of the original Quake’s release. Bethesda marked Doom’s 25th anniversary last year with a number of re-releases.

Quake’s impending revival was first hinted at last week, when Bethesda released the official schedule for QuakeCon 2021, which is running from today as an all-digital event.

The schedule initially mentioned plans to discuss a “revitalized edition” of Quake during a ‘Let’s talk Quake’ session.

The event description, which has since been pulled, originally read: “Quake is back, in this special stream John Linneman from Digital Foundry talks to Jerk Gustafsson of Machine Games about the title’s iconic legacy and what it meant to both of them. The pair will also discuss the additional content Machine Games have contributed to this revitalized edition.”

Shortly before the anniversary, XboxEra’s Nick Baker claimed to have heard that a new entry in the classic FPS series was in development at Id Software and MachineGames. It will include single-player and multiplayer modes, plus a female protagonist, he was told.

Quake is now being listed on the Microsoft Store- up to 4K - widescreen resolution support - enhanced models - new lighting - anti-aliasing, DOF - original soundtrack - includes the original expansions and a new one by Machinegames - local and online MP

Not sure about this one, OG already has extensive mods and content. Hope we get a discount, but prob not.

Played Quake 2 competitively DM 1v1

It was a great game. So many online mods. Really liked Rocket Arena 2. I used to make skins for the game.

My name back then was Apocalypse in Clan Infinity }8{ The skin I made for the clan was the cyborg from Metal Gear Solid

Pretty decent remaster. Updates visuals while keeping the art-style.

Could maybe do with more options on PC. But it's free for me, so who cares.

@uninspiredcup: Since the release of worthwhile singleplayer FPS has slowed down, this is the perfect time for me to visit old gems like Quake.

Seems like a decent remaster. Kex engine is getting used to run a lot of these old games.

Another MS/Bethesda game going to PS4/PS5... curious if this was planned before the acquisition or if they think it's a good idea to throw the PS systems a bone, in hopes of hooking them for a reboot.

The latter is key, because Quakeis first and foremost known for its excellent competitive modes. (Its single-player is just okay.)

Another great take from Zack Zwiezen.
