Watching Kojak on ITV4 this morning, and never realized a very young Christopher Walken was in it. Which is funny because he played Max Zorin in A View To Kill and Telly Savalas Blofeld in On Her Majesties Secret Service.

Anyways, Nintendo online is still embarrassing.

Nintendo fans call for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online multiplayer to be improved

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has earned critical acclaim and some fantastic sales since its launch around the world last Friday - but also criticism for its scrappy online multiplayer modes.

Criticism has centred around two points in particular.

First, the general lag which can crop up when playing any of the game's online modes. The Smash Bros. series has consistently faced problems with this when playing online - but this isn't the Wii era anymore. As a fighting game, any lag at all can kill the experience and ruin any sense of fairness when playing competitively. And sometimes, seemingly for no reason, the game chugs down to a near-total stop.

There's the added criticism here that, with Switch, Nintendo has introduced a monthly fee to play games online. For it to take money and still provide the same uneven service you sort of excused because you were getting it for free has unsurprisingly got fans grumbling.

Second, is Smash Bros. Ultimate's frequent inability to find a match with the settings you want. This is particularly true for those who just want one-on-one fights, or matches without items. Even if the majority of players want four-player battles with items on, Smash does not have a small player base and fans have questioned Nintendo's own netcode for continually failing to connect players.

Nintendo has yet to address the criticism, but has today released this notification in-game promising the game's first post-launch patch next week.

lol, I like the start of the thread.

Anyways, that Smash would suck online was already a given. Hearing people complain about it when it was obvious it was gonna be like that makes me smh. Like.. what did they expect? Nintendo confirmed it's still peer to peer, which means matches are automatically unplayable for everyone in it as long as one of the players has a bad connection.

In other news, local MP lags as well. My friend had his Switch over at my place, sat and played local multi-player with me about 1.5 metres away from my Switch, and it lagged at least 8 times in one match.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Nintendo sucks at both online MP and.. wireless overall. The only difference about their online now is that you have to pay for it and that they refuse to include a VC service.

@SecretPolice: Nintendo should pay MS for fixing the online for them instead of trying themselves with their incompetent people.

Like Wii/60 last gen a "N"/MS understanding and working together just a little would have cows gnashing their teeth and stomping their hooves. lol :P

Right? They already worked together with that Minecraft and crossplay stuff. Would be great to see them work together more on things like online, imo.

Playing any fighter online that isnt a capcom game seems to be a test of patience. Smash and Kart for me have never been great online experiences, these games excel at local co-op.

I have not played Splat... but the only online games that have treated me well on Nintendo have been monster hunter, and guess who makes that.

Well I’m certainly down with them improving it in anyway they can. Having said that though I’ve played over a hundred matches online in Smash Ultimate and my experience with it has been quite good in at least 90% of the time and that was in 4-player matches. The other 10% would largely be ok but there would be the occasional lag spike here and there. Most of the time I would play with my Switch on a wired Internet connection but also played a good number on Wi-Fi as well.

This is what happens when you try to go for cheap online. MS knows if you want the best online game, it's gonna cost you more. So pay up Nintendo fans so Nintendo can give you online on par with MS :P

Smash has never worked online. It's a real problem. The lag is real.

I'll stick to the 40 hour single player mode.

Tried to play a couple 4 player matches online. Only 1 of 5 didn't have horrific lag. The worst being a 4 minute timed match that took 12 minutes the lag was so bad. It was like playing a slide show.

Quality shipo-

Oh wait there's a discussion here. Yeah Nintendo's online definitely needs some improving, it's 2018 and I shouldn't have to go through a slideshow when playing Smash online. It happened only a couple of times but that's a couple of times too many.

Yeah, the paid service has made online worse for me in some cases. Many more communication errors and just generally more lag overall.

Not true. Brawlhalla (sp?) is free to play and seems to work just fine in online MP 4-for-alls.

OT: This is a bit disappointing. My kid wants me to get the Nintendo subscription service so he can play his buddies online, but it's hard to justify paying if this is what to expect.

Not surprised. I knew there would be online problems and they weren't going to be suddenly improved because people were now paying for the service. You can always count on Nintendo to disappoint in the realm of online.

Unfortunate and one can only hope it gets patched over time. In general though fighting games have often struggled with their netcode and only a handful do that part well. The other day I saw a video from Maximilian and I was surprised to hear him say he thought MVC Infinite had the best netcode of current fighters, haven't had the chance to try it yet.

I've said it before, but I wouldn't have cared if Nintendo took out online multiplayer for Smash. Like how I don't care how Civ VI on Switch stripped the online component (waits for a certain "morality officer").

Though, I've had local Classic Mode sections with my bro, and have had no issues, so...

And I totally agree. But look at what MS did first, the gamers could have said no to not paying online and you know the rest of the story. If anything, it is the fault of the gamers but at the end of the day, their money, their choice. Just be graceful PC gaming online is still free of charge.

except it lags when it's just two or three people in a match too.

Played with people I work with on launch night, so we all live kinda close to each other. Every match was a little bit laggy.

2002 original Xbox Live > Switch Online

Sad but true. I don't remember original Xbox having as much unplayable lag problems as most of these Switch games. OG Xbox Live also had regular fucking in-game voice chat(which has been industry standard for everyone but Nintendo since). The Nintendo Online Cell Phone app is one of the biggest jokes in gaming. Also OGbox didn't have stupid pointless Friend Codes. And you could actually message people on your friends list. These are simple things that any online network should have standard, it's basically 2019 ffs.

Embarrassing enought that Nintendo is literally still playing catch-up to a 16 year old service, yet suddenly they expect people to pay a subscription fee for it? And they throw in a mediocre NES emulator to make it seem like a better deal, which you could download a way better one with any game you want in minutes on your phone or computer(not that I support piracy, but it's the truth). PSN was free last gen and even that was way better. There's no excuse for it. Imagine if you're a little kid who loves online gaming and the Switch was your only gaming console, that would suck ass. They must not care at all. There was no effort or money invested in this service. They decided to minimize the budget so they can maximize profits on every subscription fee someone pays. Do they think we're idiots?

I would love to know HOW HAS THE LEADER OF NINTENDO'S ONLINE SERVICES STILL NOT BEEN FIRED. They've been getting criticized about their garbage online ever since the Gamecube, how have they still not made fixing this a priority yet? Do they not realize that online gaming is MASSIVE these days? It's not just some afterthought. God some of Nintendo's decisions over the years just trigger me on how mind blowingly dumb they are...

I would love to know the percentage of people wanting to play 1 on 1 with items off. I bet it's way smaller than we imagine. Maybe it's 25%, but I feel it could be surprisingly low like 1%. Either way, I would like them to add a separate mode just for those people, because this sucks for them and they are probably some of the most serious/dedicated Smash players.

The lag... I don't experience lag with Switch online. I'm in Western Europe. I don't know if it's a location based problem?

Couch co-op with friends and family and single player is better than online anyway in my opinion, and I think Nintendo knows that too
