By the time it comes out people would have long forgotten about the movie.

I don't think you've seen Inception :). Similar to how people still talk about The Matrix, Inception will be relevant for years to come!
When I was watching Inception (which I think issmart, innovative, and mind-bending!), I imagined: "How amazing would it be if this concept--and quality writing / acting-- would be if applied to a video game". I'm not sure if there should be a direct adaptation, but I do believe that Inception is a standard that more movies and games especially should strive for.
If people are still talking about The Matrix it would be how bad the sequels were. And speaking of The Matrix, weren't there some pretty mediocore games made for it? The question of whether or not it will become a ****c still remains to be seen, but it's safe to say that it made forgettable gaming experiences.
The Matrix games aren't too good, and I never was really interested in them. And the games' quality wasn't caused by the Matrix universe itself, but rather the developers. The universe and action can fit so wonderfully as a game if the right people got behind it. But I think the movie is a cIassic. Of course there's talk about the lackluster sequels (more evidence to how the original was awesome), but there's no denying that the Matrix's themes / set-pieces aren't imitated, parodied, and even celebrated :). I would even say it revolutionized action-cinema.
Also, I don't want to see an Inception game. I just want to see an imaginative concept such as it, and the quality of writing / direction be applied to video games. Having an adventure as finely told and beautiful to look at deserves interaction! Only games can provide that.
