Most Wii games had short development cycles. They are ports of last gen games like most launch titles are. They can never touch the level of 360 and PS3 graphics, so most developers are not going to focus on the graphics, as that is not the primary reason people owned the system.
The saving grace is most Nintendo games really wouldn't benefit from normal mapping, HDR and other high end effects. So as long as Wii developers create games with a good art direction, it shouldn't really matter. It most definately could have benefited from HD resolutions and textures however.
Here you go, Teuf's top 5 reasons for why Wii graphics have been mostly terrible:
5. The Wii has severely limited hardware
4. Most third parties never really bother to learn the GameCube's hardware, instead focusing on the PS2. And now that the Wii's hardware is almost identical to the GameCube's, they still don't know how to properly develop for it.
3. A lot of code and assets used in Wii games we're simply ported from last gen console versions
2. Most games we're severly rushed to capitalize on the launch

Devs either wanted a quick buck (Activisoin and Ubisoft) or they did not have enough time. Games later this year will be a different story. coonanaThat's what I've always been saying. I think I've actually found someone smrt on this board. (Note: The mis-spelling of smart was deliberate)
If Mario was going for realism-style of graphics, it would look like **** Good thing they went with Nintendo's never ending toony style eh? redneckdouglas
it is not a realistic art style fool Its not "never ending toony." They cant make a game like Mario have realistic skin textures that would be weird. But it still rivals with some 360 games and will be one of the greater games of this gen. whether fanboys can come to terms with this or not.
Wii doesn't have "severely limtied" hardware, it has hardware that's perfect for normal res games, but can't handle HD.Here you go, Teuf's top 5 reasons for why Wii graphics have been mostly terrible:

If you look at Super Mario Galaxy, it blows away anything on the wii by miles. Even the Legend of Zelda blows away all other titles to this point and it was made for the gamecube. What in the world are these developers doing? I know some are going for the quick buck but all companies do not run like that. Some companies actually strive to make quality products and I have yet to see a decent looking 3rd party game on the Wii.three words last gen ports. And for the record..SSX blur and Sonic don't look that bad.....c'mon
I know "graphics aren't everything" but to me they matter. Even Sonic is xbox quality at best. Why are these developers stuggling to tap the power of the Wii. It's suppose to be easier to develop for then gamecube, minus the controller. I just don't get it.
