"Best Game Ever" statements hold absolutely no weight.

People, we all know how opnionated people can be so we often either agree or disagree when people say *insert game* is the best game ever. That's just it though, because that's more opnionated than factual, why do people feel the need to argue it? For example, "FF7 is the best game ever". "OoT is the best game ever". Heck, if someone said "Superman 64 is the best game ever", it'd be just as credible as saying the same for MGS4 or Galaxy. These are just uninformed, exagerrated, and opnionated statements and I wanna ask System Wars why people even bother to say this stuff to begin with?

If you take Kevin VanOrd's words into account, you can say that there is no such thing as a 'best game ever' because games keeps increasing standards over time. A 10.0 game back in 1997 would be like a 7.0 if reviewed fresh today. So technically, something like MAG is better than half life right now, and in a few years something like a halo wars sequel would be better than MGS4. :P

I personally don't agree with this obviously, not entirely at least. :P

It´s a matter of evolution,games that were great before still are today,but when pitted against most of it´s contemporaries you state that most of them feel dated(mainly visually,of course)and have some pretty archaic mechanics(look at Doom and look at HL,HL2,Crysis,etc...).

I guess there are exceptions,but not many I reckon.

Lets be honest, when people say "The Best Game Ever", what they actually mean is The Best Game Ever, For Me. It just so happens that a lot of people's Best Game Ever correspond with one another.

Its kind of funny how System Wars needs opinions spelled out for them, rather than just accepting that everything that is written is an opinion, mostly. Its just common sense in this case.

Although its not set in stone anywhere that there is an overall "Best Game Ever", there is somewhat of list of possible games that can be considered "The Best". Games like Half Life, Dues Ex, FFX, FFVII, Ocarina of Time, Halo: CE, MGS4, GoldenEye, etc. won't get too much flak if someone refers to them as the best ever. However, if someone names a game like Superman 64 than hardly anybody will take them seriously/agree with them

there are some games that are very good and others that are quite bad while the majority are somewhere in the middle.

However the BEST game is a highly subjective debate and as new games are released it is likely to continually change.

My opinion of what I consider the best game has changed over the years as new and better games have come out.

The first Halo Wars is already better than MGS 4. At least I had a lot more fun with it.

I agree with kevin whateverhisface to an extent. Our standards are ever increasing in some aspects, like graphics and the expectation of multiplayer, but there are other aspects that we're sort of losing sight of. A lot of games feature bad writing, crappy music and dull action, but still get incredibly high scores because they've got big names attached to them and a lot of built up hype.

Personally, I think that there are two games tied for the best game ever made, and they were both on Super Nintendo: The Secret of Mana, and A Link to the Past.

I've found the issue lies within the inherent difference between "best" and "favourite." If someone thinks a particular game is "the best ever" they are usually thinking that it is their "most favourite game ever" and confuse it as "best." There can be no "best game ever" because 1) there are always new games coming out and 2) unless someone is able to play all games in existence and find a common, objective evaluation method that is carried across all games, there is no way to know which one is the "best ever."
