This service purports to give you SLI HD/PC Gaming experience on you Laptop or TV, be "streaming" the content down to your TV or laptop. Hence you don't need a decent PC or console, just a crummy app for your laptop, or tiny widget for your TV.

Given all the users here at SW, has anyone actually used this service? Is it any good? Can you see it taking off?

I didn't know it launched today. and if System Wars was my way of finding out, that's not a good sign from that basic standpoint.

I wonder how many days/hours? until people forget that it launched today, if anyone even know or cares at all. Destined to fail.

They will likely be a subgroup of Hermits anyone, since they're just technically playing PC games, but on someone elses computer at mid-high settings.

Yeah, we call em worms. But since OnLive is destined to fail I guess they can be called Dodo's.

OnLive fails during peak times (internet), i.e. when you would like to play games.

Launching so close to E3 I'm surprised they didn't have a stage presence there.... But no, I haven't tried it.

This is monumental for one very specific reason: now all the people who claim cows need a high-end gaming PC to play Mass Effect 2 are wrong. They could sign up for this free service and then rent Mass Effect 2 for $5.

I signed up for the free year at the beginning of the month. Same old "thanks for confirming registration" when I sign in, not able to go anywhere from there. They said they'd be doing a gradual rollout, so who knows when they're gonna let me play.

Yeah, i just went to the TC's link and got on the waiting list. I don't see OnLive being successful, but I wouldn't mind trying it out.

Same here. I think cloud computing will be a big thing in the future, but it's likely OnLive will be a casuality in the march towards the future. If their service works, I could see them getting picked up by DirecTV or Comcast as a bonus service.

Yeah I think your're right about cloud computing. The only reason I'm really against it right now is I want a physical copy of my $60 game. I don't mind having cheap arcade games or music in digital form, but I want a disc I can lend to a friend or trade in. I think you make a good point about OnLive being picked up as well. I hadn't really thought of it, but I can see it happening if it starts to take off.

Interesting, so far only 3 ppl seem to have even notionaly tried. MOst have never heard of it, and this is the geeky system wars board. Still one "bird", or whatever said he played crysis HD on his Laptop, but don't really know if he's making that up. In theory though, this is exactly what you should be able to do.

I'm interested in this since, I get bored of installing/configuring software and updating my PC. I tend to buy games for my 360 if possible, though less so now, since it's starting to show its age in graphics. I do now that British Telecom in the UK are talking about teaming up with OnLIve. This could be interesting since in reality BT own almsot all of the Internet backbone in the UK, and could provide the low ping that gamers need.

I think it will fail since It offers nothing that makes PC gaming great, like mods.

Plus you don't own the game so when you have no internet you cannot play.

And the bandwidth usages per month is huge.

Like 305 gigs per month on SD and 500 gigs+ on HD.

I am supposed to have no bandwidth limits but if my ISP saw that amount being used they would either shut me off or charge much more.

This OnLive requires a fast speed too.....my 3 megabit/sec connection would probably not be enough.

I highly doubt it will kill consoles if you already own a ps3 or 360 no point in buying onlive same for pc gamers with decent pc. It seems like the only market is people who don't own a pc or any consoles in which case I'd question weather or not you'd be interested enough in gaming to even bother with onlive.

If you buy anything you won't be able to access it after the subscription runs out. There's a subscription fee. It's the Ubisoft DRM so many are fans of. So that sounds great.

It's much more cost effective then maintaining a gaming computer, especially when power usage is put into consideration. A gaming PC uses at least an additional 300 watts of electricity. Not to mention noise pollution, which is my main gripe about PC gaming.

Few basic problems with this service. Main being you don't ever actually own any of the software you "buy" much like Sony's new PSN+ if you unsubscribe you lose access to "your" games. Second problem is the service removes almost all of the benifits of PC games like higher resolutions and mods. Third problem is latency and judging by the fact that alot of games this gen don't even work well online(BFBC2) I don't see how streaming far more bandwidth could possibly work. I hate lag in online games but it's part of the experience I guess, however lag in single player? No thanks. Maybe when we all have fiber optic connections in 2030.

This doesn't even account for all the new problems a closed service like this could cause. Stuff like hardware stagnation, games remaining full price forever because there is no physical media to move and no possiblity for price competition. Steam gives deals because they are still competing with other sources, but if there is only one source there is no need to lower prices. Competition is always good for the consumer and this service removes alot of competition. Add all of that up and what we already have now is of far more value than a service like this could ever provide imo. New products need to offer incentives not remove them.

Well, the biggest thing about Cloud computing is the ability to play state-of-the-art games on technology which would normally be incapable of rendering said games. You could take your small, 10" netbook with you anywhere and still play any PC game you want on it; instead of having to spend a ludicrous amount of money on a "gaming laptop".

The problem right now is bandwidth, and the fact that a lot of PC gamers have no desire to play a non-maxed out, sub-1080p gaming experience. If they wanted that, they probably would have just stuck to consoles. So yeah, it may not make a big impact right now - in the current generation...

...but when the next-generation of consoles are set to be released, and if you happen to be perfectly happy with current PC, people may just decide to give cloud-computing a chance. The problem is affordability; it needs to be noticeably cheaper than buying a PS3 or 360. Luckily, OnLive seems to have ditched the original $15/month plan and is instead leaning towards a much more reasonable $5/month plan, which is little more than the annual cost of Xbox Live or PSN Plus.

I think this tech will be big in 2-3 years when fiberoptic is standard and we have faster connections. So, there is at least one more generation of hardware consoles left. After that, it's anyone's guess.

I'm not so sure about that point. Gamers inevitably lose interest in old games, and if the developers/publishers want to continue selling their product, they'll have to sell it at a price point appropriate to the demand. The games themselves are competing with each other on the service for subscribers' limited dollars, and my understanding is that the publishers, not OnLive, are mostly responsible for setting the prices. So there is still competition in place, and games will naturally lower in price with or without a compelling competitor to OnLive.

That said... there is of course competition too, and some very good ones. Gaikai hopes to provide ad-based cloud gaming which requires no subscription fees.

Thanks
