Alright, this isn't about Resistance 2, so no sticky for me.

People constantly cry about how GameSpot was unfair to PS3 in 2007... The simple truth is that we have new reviewers here! They are completely different, and probably would've given games like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction AAA scores, even though I think the latter was reviewed by a guy that still is a GameSpot employee.

Brad Shoemaker, Greg Kasavin, Alex Navarro, Jeff Gerstmann, and Ryan Davis all left late last year or early this year.

So that's what it is. GameSpot's old employees didn't think any PS3 exclusives were AAA worthy in 2007, while the newer ones probably did.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but I think this seems to be the case. It only seems logical.

GameSpot's old staff has higher standards than their new staff.

The only thing that tick me off was that they gave Ratchet and Clank a 7.5 when its average was around 89 or 92 at the time.

If gregK and jeff gerstsmann was still around reviews would be much more fair. It has nothing to do with the scores themselves, just certain reviewers who felt like he should show extreme favouritism towards particular consoles.

Though actually some of the ones that gave bad scores ARE still here. Heck, Aaron Thomas, the guy that massively flopped Ratchet and Clank, just posted the Guitar Hero World Tour review a few days ago. PS3 reviews have just been somewhat lucky not to run into him on any major games (though I will hold extreme anger against any reviewer who gives Valkyria Chronicles below an 8...that game is phenominal thus far)

Um what? not really Von Ord was still part of the old team...and quite frankly it wasn't until 08 that the PS3 even got a AAA exclusive game on metacritic....where now it has 2(will be 3 when R2 starts getting back to 90)....

all in all 07 was a solid year for the PS3...where as 08 was a good year for the PS3

Yeah, I was pretty sure that guy was still here.

But Uncharted, for example, was reviewed by Ryan Davis. I think someone like Lark Anderson, or heck, even Kevin VanOrd, would've given it a 9.

Nothing against any reviewers mentioned.

Your right they should have looked at the average score everyone else was giving the game. Then base their review off of that and not their own opinion.

I remember playing Ratchet and Clank thinking is this game ever going to end! I think they could have shaved a few hours off that game it was really sputtering along by the end. I am interested in what happens to Clank though.

also GregK, Jeff G, Alex Navarro were awesome reviewers and id much rather have it the way they had it than the way IGN does"

Team Sony
Team Microsoft
Team Nintendo

As for new gamespot

I can't complain some of the new critics have been sort of good

Chris Watters
Guy Co-cker(im sure i can't spell his name without getting censored)

and Von Ord....well i guess i just never agree with him, but his reviews this year have actually been better written and less anoying than last year

Brad = 5/5 MGS4

Jeff = 5/5 LBP

Even with supposedly "higher standards" the PS3 was still able to get AAA scores from past GS employees.

I realize Kevin VanOrd was part of the old team, as well as Aaron Thomas, but I don't recall them reviewing most of the big new games, like Gears of War, Twilight Princess, Uncharted, and such. They probably did a few, though.

I just think old GameSpot would've given Resistance 2 an 8.5.

Also, I doubt Resistance 2 will get over a 90 average on MetraCritic or GameRankings.

If GameSpot gave Uncharted a 9, it would be AAA on GameSpot and GameRankings. ;) But as a result, it's AA on both sites.

The PS3 was and is still it's own worst enemy. The turnaround as of late has been nice to see for those of us that own one but let us not forget how long it took to get here.

The Wii does not need a AAA it will still double the PS3 and XBOX 360 combined sales just as it is now!

W1NGMAN-
i think that is enough that needed to be said. THose guys are old gamespot....and they gave these games 5/5 and the actual written reviews were fantasitc to boot.

It has nothing to do with the old staff being more critical or the new staff being more PS3 friendly.

It was just the games in 08 in the eyes of many critics for the ps3 have been better than the games in 07 on the PS3.

I don't, but I'll find out once The Giant Bomb posts their Resistance 2 review.

And even thought Giant Bomb gave Metal Gear Solid IV and Little Big Planet 5/5, I still think the newer guys would've given at least one 2007 PS3 exclusive an AAA.

But that's just my bet.

It's pointless to speculate. The fact is that it doesn't matter. It is what it is. GS may be more lenient, but it is what it is. If I had my own website, I would make sure to have brutally critical reviews... but I do not have that. It is what it is.

the only time i really felt gamespot had an agenda against a PS3 exclusive was R&C. not becuase it got a 7.5 but for the reasons it got a 7.5 "identity crisis"? seriously? or lets teh foget that R&C had "too many gameplay mechanics" R&C has always been known for crazy and cool weapons(something that carried over to resistance) and a game that could be played that way you want. you were never forced to play a certain type of way if you didn't want to play it that way you never had to. as a fan of teh R&C seris i thought R&C was a great amazing game that may have had it's faults but none of those fault had anything to do with its identiy or mechanics

It's so much fun to make baseless theories. Can I try one? How about: "I heard that Sony finally ponied up the cash, and got Gerstmann fired so they could stick VanOrd, Mc Shea, and Watters in there and give out a bunch of good scores to PS3 exclusives."

Kidding aside, the simplest explanation tends to be the correct one. In this case, it's because the quality of games released on the system has significantly increased. I personally don't get the outcry over Ratchet--I thought it was good but nothing all that special. Other 2007 exclusives that jump to mind--Folklore, Eye of Judgment, and so on--were good but not groundbreaking. The fact is, it took time for the platform to come into its own, for any number of reasons. This year, every platform saw its ups and downs, but the PS3, with MGS4, Resistance 2, and LittleBigPlanet, has had a 1-2-3 punch that's really hard to ignore.

That has nothing to do with GameSpot, and everything to do with the newly consistent quality of the games. Of course, the PS3 had plenty of duds this year along with other platforms (Haze?), but it has nothing to do with staff changes. After all, we didn't make the games! It just means, holy ***, 2008 is an awesome year for games, and the PS3 has finally gotten its share of the pie.

We'll talk about the Wii some other time...

Edit: Hmm, I didn't lock this.
