This is not a fanboy rant! See my Sig!

So I was talking to my friend today, and we got into a discussion about how Microsoft baught into the GTA exclusive episodes. So we got deeper into it and we started to talk about how Sony could have done better, and he said that "Sony picked the wrong time to play fair, they should have played it liked the did in the PS2 era... Dirty". Then he went on to say "Microsoft is obviously paying off developers for exclusive DLC, and time exclusive games", which I sort of get and it's sort of obvious. Then "Sony seems like they just don't want it this time around, while Microsoft punces on everything, I don't hate them for it because it's making better console"(I think he said).

Do you think Sony tried to play it fair between MS and Nintendo this time around? Do you think that they got cocky and depended on their name brand to the sell the consoles, without the correct marketing, good pricing or even games?

Neither one is playing fair or unfair, no such thing in the business world, either legally doable or not. Both companies are doing the most they can to come ahead, MS simply has more money and a higher install base.

I think they couldn't generate the funds to even engage in back alley deals like this. I think the answer, essentially is probably more complicated than just a single decision to not play dirty or rely solely on their branding.

it has nothing to do with playing fair and everything to do with sonys hubris in thinking they could release anything and people would snap it up

we all remember the sony executive quotes and that was exactly what went wrong

next gen starts when we say it does, instilling discipline, people will work harder, ect, ect....

Sony didn't do a whole lot to get developers on their side last gen ...... they just knew where to go to make the money. Sony just did their normal thing , developed games and picked up some good projects to publish like any of the 3. They didn't pay a lot of money tokeep games off the other platfoms.

Microsoft did what they had to do this genand blindsided them a bit and people were criticizing Sony over it ...... so that's why you are seeing exclusive Batman content , and a deal for a third party game like Agent.

I don't think lying to your customers and over hyping your product is playing fair. Sure microsoft might of payed out some money for some deals but at least the customer benefits telling people your console does 4D and 120fps isn't a benefit it's just BS. Claiming bluray is needed thus you should pay more isnt a benefit its more BS.

Agreed. I think Sony figured their two gens of dominance created enough fanboys for them to focus early this gen on winning the format war more than gaming. They won the format war but let an old and barely breathing rival rise to the top again, and a new powerful player establish a good marketshare. If DD takes over in the next 10-15 years, this will have been a major blunder.

Sony got cocky the day they shipped out a $600 console; expecting EVERYONE to buy it because it was another playstation.

sony choose to put BR in the ps3's to win the foramt war (which bc of the ps3 they did) but it caused the ps3 to be more expensive, the the USA economy went to crap (note ps3 has cought up or passed the 360 everywhere besides the US) which slowed down the ps3, buying exclusives is really expensive so sony relies on 1st party exclusives. ps3 is now 299 finally and now its basically ps2 all over again, here we go! it has nothing to do with sony playing it "fair" they want to make money and sell lots of consoles however they can

I don't think it is more about playing fair.... although Sony could've have had RROD marketing swipes at MS if they wanted to....on that front they have been fair..... but as far as buy exclusives and DLCs...I think it is just more Sony wanted to, rightfully I might add, spend money on their own games.......games like Uncharted, Warhawk, MLB The Show, etc

I would rather have those games than "The Ballard of Gay Tony" or "Motorcycle Club"

They turned fair at the time they needed to be ruthless the most. I mean they released the most expensive current gen console so they should have at least secured a ton of exclusives to make the console sell like crazy at that price, but they didn't and that was a BIG mistake. Anyway Sony seems to be going back to their roots now, let's hope they have understood that playing fair is not always the best course of action.

^ Very true, since the Gamecube and Xbox were failing due to low amount of awesome game sin comparison, the higher amount of multiplats this time around should have convinced Sony to play as dirty as they could, get some DLC for GTA themselves, maybe get some more 3rd party support from Valve (a company that seems to really hate PS3), and just generally not back down like they did.

At least they seem to be trying harder now, exclusive Batman, Bioshock, and a Mirrors Edge map probably don't come completely free, and the new FFXV and Agent games seem like they will be damn good.

Sony is on the right path right now, forget about the past. Its finally to the point like last Gen, were im so excited for some of there upcoming exclusives, i feel like a kid at Christmas. MS can lock down all the exclusive DLC they want, while Sony keep pumping out great games.

It has nothing to do with unfairness, it has to do with different calculations on either side. For Sony, the episodes weren't worth $50M, b/c they were already the established "home" console of GTA. MS needed to give gamers an incentive to migrate to the 360 to play GTA, so they figured the downloadable content would be a carrot that could draw some fans to the 360. Both got what they wanted, really. GTA still sold slightly less than 6M on PS3, but the 360 version moved 7M+ units.

In a bidding war against ms, sony would always loose, ms are just too rich. Its why dlc and 3rd party multiplats and unfathomable mass media marketing are giving ms the edge as opposed to the bells and whistles the ps3 offers or its stellar exclusives.

The PS3 cost more than intended to manufacture - that's where it went wrong. Two years before release, Sony saw that the Cell and Blu-Ray were going to cost more than intended, and when manufacturing started, things went wrong, delays occured, and the per-unit cost of the PS3 shot up by a couple hundred dollars. - Sony never intended to have a $600 console that cost $1000 to make - to say they planned that, that they planned to "instill discpline", RIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER, etc - is insane. Sony screwed up 2 years before the PS3's release, and whate occured from 2005 until 2008 was the flailing of a company that blew its own leg off. - Things have turned around for Sony in 2009 simply because they've gotten costs in line (finally), managed to get their online functional, have games like Arkham Aslyum looking comparable and coming with exclusive content, and their line-up is coming together. They're finally in a position where they aren't drowning. - However, there's no "dirty play" that will change their recovery.

Makes sense. But I guess it's all different tastes. I could care less about a lot of the PS3 line up. GoW3 is the only one I really must have, where as DLC for Fallout 3 and GTA 4 are all great to me. Screw it, as long as we're playing.
