I haven't been following it that closely, but what would MS have to sell in Japan for them to claim it's doing better than the original Xbox?

Seems quite likely to me.

They have around to 400,00 sales so far in Japan I think. Add to that 7,000 a week (the current selling pace) and the inevitable surge when Lost Odyssey is released. It is going to there or there abouts.

People, people, people,

before you go posting nonsense in reply to an outrageously radical guess, look up some information.  It takes a few seconds at most.  gamesearefun.com has tons of sales info for Japan (the new hardware numbers are coming today, but they're not up yet).  As of January 28, 2007, the 360 had sold 306,378 consoles in Japan.  Last year, the average week was about 4k.  There were some weeks higher, and some weeks lower, but it ended up being about 4k (around 200k sold throughout 2006).  In order to sell 700k units in a year (700k breaks a million, that's why I chose it), you would have to sell about 15k units per week on average.  That isn't going to happen.  It's not even close to selling that right now, within a couple of months of the two biggest releases the console has seen in an entire year, so why would anything change?

There isn't a single reason in the world to believe that the 360 is capable of moving 700,000 units in a year to Japan.  The 360 will most likely break a million in its lifetime, but even that's somewhat doubtful.  If the PS3 catches on when some software is released, it's only going to push the 360 even further into the gutter.

I don't consider Oblivion to be in the same market as say, FF or the dissapointing Blue Dragon. Those are action games combined with RPGs.

Although both of my examples with J-RPGS, don't get my words mixed up. I said Oblivion and Mass Effect are action games combined with RPGs, which is different then the more turn-based RPG like FF or the dissapointing Blue Dragon.
