Ratchet & Clank goes Gold, another Sony win

Ratchet & Clank for PS4, a reimagining of the first game, runs at 1080p/30fps and is expected to be 10-12 hours. Though it's based on elements of the first game, it is described as a "whole new game." It is also based on the film, which is also based on the original game, Insomniac explained on Twitter.

The game is budget-priced, available for $40 instead of $60. It launches on April 12, which is just a couple weeks before the movie, which has an impressive voice cast, comes to theaters on April 29.

In addition to the much-improved visuals, Ratchet & Clank the game will feature new planets, bosses, and weapons, as well as a modernized control scheme. These weapons consist of both brand-new weapons and some returning from the Ratchet & Clank Future games, such as the Groovitron that forces nearby characters to dance. Also making a return here is the Bouncer weapon from Going Commando, but you'll need to preorder the game in order to get your hands on that.

In all seriousness, it's a remake of the first game. Except, not quite. It also connects to the film (which is also based on the original game and also different) so some things won't be quite the same as you'd remember from the very first game. And Insomniac are also playing with this as far as the writing in this game goes, with recurring characters having "deja-vus" per say when they are being "introduced" for the first time. Plus they're adding some of the more modern mechanics too and that will likely cause some changes.

It's a bit "confusing" but it's all just silly marketing in the spirit of the series. All we really need to know is if it plays great or not, as we know they've nailed the look of it already.

For people such as me, who don't know much about this game, perhaps you could elaborate TC as to what exactly attracts you to this type of game? A little bit more elaborate OP would help foster a more interesting discussion.

Ratchet and Clank is like an action platformer. It's like a platformer with a lot of emphasis placed on third person shooting and arena action sequences. The games are known for their incredible sense of humor, for their tight gameplay, for the incredible variety they exhibit in their moment to moment gameplay, and for just being incredible fun. If you have played Sunset Overdrive, you sort of know what to expect from Ratchet and Clank, though my understanding (admittedly not necessarily accurate, since I have never actually played SO) is that Ratchet and Clank at its best is better than SO is.

Sony needs to slow down. The competition will be completely wiped out soon.

Okay, so they are making a new movie based on the first game, and naturally, things change in the transition from game to movie. So far so good.

Then, they are taking the movie and making a game based on the movie, and the movie itself is based on the first game, which means that this new game is a reimagined interpretation of the first game, based on the movie, which in itself is a reimagined interpretation of the first game.

Yeah, they're just really fun games. The original Ratchet game is actually my favorite title in the franchise, and was one of the games I grew up on, so naturally, I'm pretty pumped for the remaster!

I've never played R&C and I'm quite impressed by the quality of the remaster. But I dunno if I can care enough to actually buy it as opposed to renting it down the line. The fact it's also coming out the same day as DS3 does it no favors for me.

I played and finished the original Ratchet and Clank on the PS2 and thoroughly enjoyed it. From my standpoint, loving action platformers, Ratchet and Clank would make great mascots for the PlayStation brand similar to Mario and Luigi for Nintendo. Ratchet is a mechanic and pilot, and uses a variety of tools, gadgets, and weapons in his adventures. Clank is his robot sidekick who helps him kind of like R2D2 in Star Wars helps Luke. The observations about the humor being great are correct. It seemed to me at the time that the item change interface was unique, clever, and user-friendly. Some of the gadgets are really silly but very useful adding to the humor of the game. I am really happy for PlayStation fans getting this and the movie. That it is a remake should not stop anyone from getting it, and I would expect it to look and play great being the newest version of an established franchise. IMO it should be up there in quality with Spyro, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Rayman.

I'll consider the game when it drops to $25 or less. Depending on much I enjoy the film.

You should play it should you ever get the chance, it's a very well done 3D platformer.

All this complaining about solidbasic, but he's really a keeper of these forums. He could have just beein boring and said Ratchet went gold, but instead he keeps the fire going by claiming a win, and tripping you fanboys out. Without people like him, why post here and not every other gaming forum on the internet?

This is one game on PS4 I wish I could play. Love Ratchet!

I dislike Ratchet and Clank as a whole for re-hashing the same thing over and over but the first game is the only one I liked so I probably will pick this up and see the movie.

I really enjoyed Tools of Destruction so I'll pick this up eventually. R&C is one of the best franchises in the Sony stable. Excellent games.

I guess it does make sense that there are a whole lot of people who may not know about the series, considering it was more relevant in the PS2 days. Back in the PS1/PS2 days, platformers were much more popular than they are now. This was before FPS got really big. But basically, Insomniac took the genre and added guns to it. Big, fun, explosive guns, and also, made the characters geared towards teenagers who can take some adult humor (like Up Your Arsenal - my favorite of the series). But it's definitely an iconic series, and I am glad they are rebooting it. There was some fatigue during the PS3 days, but now I think is a great time to bring it back.
