And it's available in 4K, for the happy few! Introducing Anvil Aerospace's F7C "Hornet"!

We’re pushing the limits with Star Citizen, and this commercial is our best example yet. It’s rendered 100% in-engine in real time at 4k resolution. We scale everything for the super high resolutions that will be the basis of tomorrow’s gaming experience; our assets are designed with high polycounts instead of having details baked into their textures. That’s a big part of why NVIDIA and AMD have been demoing Star Citizen at 4k! The next generation of CPUs and GPUs will make this kind of experience possible in gameplay, and we are building Star Citizen to be ready. With the Hornet commercial, we wanted to give our backers an early look. If you have a 4k-compatible monitor, select “Original” from the video settings on YouTube (or download the 4k file directly here. ) If you don’t, 1080p is highly recommended.

"Next generation" is just a buzz-word to PC gamers. I see it being used all the time. I think we have enough sensationalist headlines as it is without consumers promoting a business' products.

Generation is a time-frame more than anything. For example, the Baby Boomers proceeded the Silent Generation. But does that necessarily mean they are of a higher quality in any way? *Looks at the United States of America's debt.* No.

Not black flag!

Actually this does really look good, I'll probably upgrade my PC a year or so after the new consoles are here.

I hope transitions between space and the planet surface are seamless, That would impress me more than anything.

I'm torn, do I upgrade before Christmas or after in Q1 when I get a PS4.

Dammit I was late with my thread...

Anyways this is what I said in it:

Here we hear more sound effects, see internal-cockpit animations, and see the graphics at their best. All of the assets and graphics you see are in-game and are still in their earlier stages of development.

I say in-engine because I highly doubt it's real time considering they render all of their videos at 4k. I've read they are targeting 4k for their final rendering, but 99% of high end PCs couldn't even do that at this point (they probably used some crazy Titan SLI build to make the video. Remember, the game is targeting high-end PCs of 2015, so they have some time. Though I would assume the majority of gamers aren't going to be wasting their processing power on 4k and will just render at 1080p with some decent AA, 4k is complete overkill but it looks so amazing.

Anyways this is no doubt shaping up to be the best looking video game of all time and if they can deliver on even half of what they've said they are working on, the best video game of all time. The amount of detail in the ships is amazing and the graphics overall are absolutely stunning.

When you see the ship breaking up at the end, that's exactly how ships are modeled in the game. Each ship has all of their components individually modeled and physics applied. Each ship doesn't just have an HP bar and when it reaches 0 it blows up, instead you damage individual components and literally tare a part ships. All of the ships are fully modeled and can be walked around in. It's extremely impressive when you put all of the pieces together.

Basically games like Star Citizen on the PC are why the console graphics war is completely irrelevant. When you build a game that truly takes advantage of what PCs can do, the results are pretty impressive.

I don't think anybody even has a 4k monitor. In fact, I haven't even seen the prices on them yet. I'd probably avoid them, though. Text is way too small as it is with a 1920x1080 resolution.

Asus released a 31" 4k monitor ( there are some reviews of it already ) . If i'm not mistaken a couple of other companies as well. As for text not really a problem just increase Dpi settings on windows. But as it stands now 4k is way to expensive and only a very small amount of gamers are gonna go for it. Hopefully though by 2015 the game will be released we will see 4k monitors under $1k

But the game could wind up sucking as well as being a broken mess. So not really.

That's entirely possible, but beside the point. You stated you weren't losing anything, I've pointed out otherwise.

Also, it's not very likely that that scenario will happen. Not with Chris Roberts' track record.

Well considering it's being rendered at 4k, and all of the camera angles, I highly doubt that video was rendered in real-time.

I think that could be rendered in real time, well at least render each sequence individually then edit a video together in premiere pro or something.

A single R9 290X can do Bioshock Infinite at 4K:

plus i always find games set in space tend to render really easily. spaceship geometry must be much easier to work with than creature geometry.

lol you probably don't know what did you say... SC ships is very highly detailed and actually currently has no LOD, so it's forced to render them at full polygon counts... the space perhaps 'empty' but the asteroid field was pretty system hogger... but I believe the scene was rendered in real time, probably with 2 or 3 Titans at very least, remember, the biggest bullshit so far is that there is no real gameplay at all for now, so there's no real gameworld yet, but that's about it, since it's still almost 2 years before scheduled release it's understandable.

only x-rebirth and limit theory have shown real gameplay.

Forced to render them at full polygon counts? what do you mean by that? they are rendering like 8 million plus polygon sculpts rather than efficient meshes? Well if that's the case then of course it couldn't be rendered in real time, lol.

I thought that this video was made in engine?

@psymon100: You're comparing an Unreal 3 engine game built around the consoles to the CryEngine 3 native on the PC built for high-end PC specs in 2015. I would bet that a single ship of Star Citizen has more polygons than an entire scene of Bioshock Infinite.

Also they probably have an LoD system in place because the CryEngine 3 has that built in. There will also be culling and whatnot. It's not going to be running unnecessarily detail.

For these videos they may flip off the LoD system and render at 4k. No way is it in real time even with 2-3 titans. It's all 100% in-engine but it was probably not real time when it was rendered. The CryEngine has built in methods to render video at a certain framerate by dumping all of the uncompressed bitmaps (huge files) into a folder and then using software to put them together. The audio was probably added in after.

No way that was real time and in 4k. The game will look that good and run well in 2015, but computers today would struggle with that. They are targeting 4k as their base rendering though, so the game will be built with the assumption the graphics will be rendered at 4k, even if you only render 1080p.

Honestly, while it looks really nice, it's not mind blowing. Reminds me of SWTOR's space missions, or Mass Effect's in game cutscenes.

@TheFadeForever: They said early on it was like 100k per avatar, ships are around the same. The ship-design contest they are running has a 300k polygon limit. The bigger ships are going to have upwards of 1 million.

Polygon counts only mean so much. They have tessellations for a lot of close up detail. What's more impressive is the amount of animated objects, the lighting, and how the whole image comes together so well.

that's a pretty good answer, very convincing. Yeah true it is made with 2015 hardware in mind.

Is this one of your most anticipated titles?

As the owner of a fairly capable gaming computer, I'm honestly not that intrigued by Star Citizen. Yes, graphically it looks incredible and the developer is genuinely attempting things that haven't been done before (which I appreciate); but for some reason I still get a sense of "meh" when watching their progress videos (as I've been doing for the past 6 months or so). It just doesn't grab my attention.

Anyone else feel this way?
