I like both. Some genres work better for others. Like realism is so much better for FPSs (ArmA2 FTW!!), while RPGs and such are better without the realism.

Imagination, but realism can be good too depending on the game (like how RDR is awesome for being realistic).

I aim more towards the imagination. In fact the only "real" game that I own...is...hmm...Dirt 2 and the Ridge Racer series. Other than that all my games are fantasy in some way. Such as Dead Rising (zombies), Halo (Sci fi), Final Fantasy (Do I need to say?), and those are just a few.

Edit: I mean, after all I live in real life so why not go out on a far limb and try some out of this world stuff. I know somebody said Red Dead Redemption and I for one was a very big horse rider when I was younger and did that for like 12 years, so why not do those sorts of things in real life and leave games to the imagination? Not saying realism games aren't good as I play some of them to, that is just my opinion.

i like a bit of both as long as they catter to my interests that is. Heavy rain had a great mixture of both and tha's why i love it. However if it became a matter of doing everything you would do in real life, as in EVERYTHING, then it would really kill it for me. As long as futuregames pass the uncannyvalley when aproaching realism it's good enough for me. Going beyond that however wouldn't be fun at all.

I go for whichever does best, great fantasy world or realism like GT. I just hate when kids call cell-shade/phong games poor graphics when is meant to look artsy, and kids yap about games being unrealistic when nearly all games have arcadey takes like mw with perks *rolleyes*

What do you prefer? When a game grabs more inspiration from Reality than just plain Imagination, or vise versa? Basically GTAIV vs SMG1/2 type of thing. Or do you prefer something in the middle...? I guess something like Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, or Halo.

AmayaPapaya

There is no such thing as realism in videogames you say GTA IV but the fact that you can do all the things Niko can do makes it imagination.

basically videogames whatever the type make you do what you basically wouldn't do in real life.

well unless your the halo killer or that guy that literally plotted to kill someone from a game of counter strike.

Hilarious... I bet if someone said of Mario Galaxy "It's Mario Sunshine 1.5 and sucks" or "OMG you just jump around -_-" you'd go nuts at them. Banjo was a great game, ditto for the two Viva Pinatas, and you'll "forgive" Kameo nothing, it'll choose whether or not to forgive you and your insolence to Rare, still making great games :D

I much prefer imagination, but a blend of the two can be great two. Such as Burnout (real cars with insane speed/controls/crashes) or Halo (real guns mixed with lasers, swords, leaping thru the air, etc).

It depends on the gener. With platformers, I prefer imagination whereas with FPS's or 3rd Person shooters I prefer it 60:40, realism:imagination. However, few FPSs get it right with a balance of imagination and realism.

There's room for both. I'm not confined to one or the other. However, when it comes to simulations, the more realistic the better be it graphics, physics, or game mechanics. A good example is the weather system built into Flight Simulator X. It actually takes into account the three main types of clouds as well as precipitation and visibility limiters all of which can be customized by the player at different elevations. In addition, the game can import real world weather/conditions.

Sci-fi, RPG, and casual games I don't mind if they dispensed with realism altogether.

Imagination.

Realism is never done well enough, and is never as satisfying. For every genre out there except simulators for obvious reasons.

Imaginative worlds are more beautiful because they aren't limited by the borders of our physical world. Note that realistic art design does not reflect realistic gameplay. Games such as GTA IV are very arcadey and have little to do with realism. And that's for the better, or else we would only have sterile boring games like Gran Turismo and Forza.
