Really, what fraction of the gaming population do the hardcore gamers represent?

Anyone have data on this, though of course I'm not expecting a "Hardcore Vs. Casuals" pie chart? Actually, that would be great :P

Can't be done, the definition of "hardcore" is subjective.

No data but it's hard to compute. Some people may buy a game to game hardcore on it while other casually play the exact same game.

Ex.) Halo.

Many people buy it's just because their friends own it and its fun to do some matchmaking every other weekend.

Others buy it and in two months they have flaming, samurai heads for their characters or have beaten the game SP on Legendary.

Two different gamers, same game.

The hardcore and casual labels are defined diferently from person to person, they aren't set in stone, hence being sh*t. Not only that, but one can play certain games casually, and play other games with a much more dedicated aproach. One might as well pull a number out of his ass, it's as factual as any other number. Here - 25%. Mark that down and consider it fact. But if you want it on a smaller scale, ex. in a small town, that can be done with a survey.

Nobody really knows. The definition of 'hardcore gamers' and 'casual gamers' differs from person to person.

By "hardcore" do you mean people who post on online forums? Because I'm sure that is just a small fraction of the total market.

Hardcore gamer is such a joke term really. I laugh at all the people on XBL who set their gamer tags to "pro" lol, it's funny not just because they arn't getting paid to play games but because the gamerzones don't do anything at all. It's just stupid.

Most people who call themselves "hardcore" are just people who want to try to seperate themselves from other people, they want to feel special, like their gaming hobby is "unique" to them.

It's just a sign of insecurity, in my book anyone that plays games is a gamer, just some people like more challenging games then others, doesn't make them "hardcore" mind you. Just more skilled.

Hardcore is subjective, I believe I am hardcore but I'm not a regular hardcore, I play Mario, Sly, Zelda, Ratchet and Clank etc. until I 100% them, not the regular hardcore crowds game but I play them like some would play other hardcore games. Honestly the term Hardcore should be thrown out, we all like games why separate us into categories.

Assuming we're calling SW posters hardcore. Very little. And that's overselling System Wars posters.

About 0.00000000000001% if we're going by the actual dictionary definition of "hardcore".

And around I'd say a good 60% if we're going by the idiotic definition people spout off on this forum.
