See the Japanese don't buy the 360 because it's an American console, they don't buy it because of these stupid commercials!

Is this the Japanese version of "Dur Dur Dur!!!!!"?

This is an insult even to the DOA Series

Foot Locker?

Nice use of 3D Studio Max

Now for the grand daddy of them all.

Gears of War

Come on cows, continue to show that you are hypocrites, bash these ads after you blatently defended the horrible 'this is living' ad,

BTW, I didn't see anyone jerking off to soccar in any of the 360 ads...

Lets admit it, if Gears had a Japanese teenager being attacked by a giant fake looking hulk hand then it will increase it's sales by ten folds.

Uh, why do web sites still use WM to stream video? Anyways, it seems you dont know very much about Japanese culture if you think those commercials are odd. We are talking about a country where this was a big hit for the kids. Prepare the LOLz.

That's music though, not some ridiculous advertisement, compare and contrast that to the PS3's advertisements.

Also yes that was weird, I saw some men in diapers and I immediantly turned it off.

But isn't this just as ridiculous?

I actually have a number of Japanese gamers on my 360 friends list. They all happen to have Gears of War on their game list believe it or not. I don't even play the game myself, so it's not like I met them playing it. Aegis Wing, Crackdown, Phantasy Star and Oblivion (yes, Oblivion) are popular with them also.

They say, along with some Korean friends that the 360 is only purchased by the Hard Core set over there.

I'm not trying to say it'll be a mainstram console or anything, but all things considered they aren't doing too bad.

Well, the first few commercials are simply targeting the wrong demographic audience.

I am sure that this goes without saying, but it is safe to say that people who play theXbox 360 are made up almost entirely of males from as young as 12 years old to as old as 28 (and even older). Those guys advertising the first few commercials are part of a popular boy band group in Japan called TOKIO. Imagine having in the US a boy band group (I dunno, Backstreet Boys?) advertising the Xbox 360... would it make you want to buy the console? Hmmm...

With regards to the Gears of War commercial... well, I guess you could say that having a school girl in the advertisement (in my opinion they could have chosen someone much, much cuter) is the only way to get people to buy a shooter game like Gears of War in Japan...

Yeah your right. But I'm just saying what works in Japan might not make sense in America. And the Yatta video is a perfect example of how different Japanese are in terms of entertainment, wich video games fall under (altough the slow motion show totally rocks the house). Obviously what ever MS is doing over there, its not working well enough.

First of all I wouldn't care for to see my favorite artists chanting that annoyance sang. Also WTF a boy band? You're right talk about totally targeting the wrong audience.

SONY didn't need that for Resistence to sell over 150,000 there. To adjust to populartion size to the West that's over 300,000 copies sold.

But the thing is if you look at the very successful PS2. It's advertisements weren't you know, how should I put it.....like that.

Here are some Playstation advertisments.

Normal to me

Not too wacky

Half a million seller

Little weird but I get the point

No wrong in this

Don't get me wrong I see the cultural differences, but I can definately tell the difference between culture and bad advertising.

Well in the end your advertising is only as good as the agency that does the work. I agree MS needs to find a strategy that works for Japan because so far, they havent found one. Maybe Bill Gates should dance around in his underwear singing some wacky song about the xbox.

No duh, even Sakaguchi has said the 360's advertising sucks in Japan and is why the 360 is barely known. They really need to work on their advertising than their Japan support now since they got the dev support up.

I lived in Japan for a month, and watching TV, the PS3 ads were cool. As in actiony and making you want to play, While the Wii's were cute and corny, and the Xbox's generally non existant and when they came on, terrible.

The Folklore trailer is pretty humourous

If you look at these adverts from a North American or European view point then they look odd but I've seen lots of game adverts on other systems from Japan that might look strange as well.

If you don't understand Japanese culture or speak the language then you can't really understand it that well. I mean have a look at the number of Western stars who go to Japan and make odd Japanese adverts. It's nothing new.

Microsoft may well have to look at its advertising ideas but I don't think that's themain problem for itin Japan.

I would think the Japanese would love it. Young Japanese schoolgirl being overpowered? That's like the Japanese' forte.

It was great. Met some great people, stayed over at some girls house, visted her School (Girls Only by the way), went on a few dates, played some games on the PS3/Wii/360, got to play DMC4 ( that was worth the 1 hour waiting line), and got someone to translate an article in a major newspaper that said the PS3 would be the winner about 2009-2010.

And saw Japanese game shows. Now THOSE were messed up and hilarious, mostley because they involve physical humour, but in a funny way.

3 Questions

1. Where the hell did that turtle come from in the first Gears of War advert and why did it attack that girl?

2. Why was there a man dressed as a sasquatch under the girls bed in the second Gears of War advert?

3. What's any of this got to do with gears of war?

The TOKIO commercials arepretty good by Japanese TV standard. Rent Japanese shows more and you'llsee what I mean. The Gears schoolgirl videos are like... WTH??
