"After spending about 2 hours transferring data and installing games to my brand new Xbox 360 S, it displayed a red light and the system shut off. After about 10 minutes, I tried turning it on and the only response was the little "bing" noise- no lights or any other sounds. An hour later, only a solid red light comes on when I try to turn it on. Unplugging everything, removing the hard drive as xbox support suggests, same results. Red dot of death is definitely not a joke. I pre-ordered this item and was really looking forward to using it. Now I either have to wait for a replacement from Amazon (July 13), or send it to Microsoft and wait at least 3 weeks for them to fix it. I am so upset and disappointed. Microsoft and Amazon have been incredibly unhelpful.

This should be of concern to everyone who thinks the hardware failure of this system is in the past.

I can't believe the MS rep tried to tell me they fixed this issue, and that MS is not admitting these systems are still faulty. I never had an Xbox 360 crap out after just 2 hours. As you can see, it is well ventilated, too."

Will it is a first gen 360 slim model. Its only to be expected. NEVER BUY FIRST GEN. First gen ps3s are ylod (due to heating and cooling of system over the years causing cracks in BGA) Firt gen 360s have such poor ventelation it fries gpu.

So what 3 people that we know of have had problems with the new Xbox 360 S and its a huge issue now, you do realise that PS3's and even some Wii's can be defective at purchase ?

same. It was always funny until I got RROD. I thought it wouldnt happen to me because I pretty much gave the xbox its own room filled with all the air it needed. But still got RROD :(

I agree, its very sad how fanboys will hang on to every report about faulty hardware and claim its a widespread issue when there's no evidence supporting that.

Doesn't matter how much people say " electronics fail ", this console was billed as and is still assumed to be the reliable console. I'm not trying to claim that this wil happen to everyone, and I'm not a fanboy. I've had a 360 and loved it, but I don't want to buy another one to find out this would happen. If there is a possible widespread issue the people need to know what's up.

Its even more sad when fanboys turn on each other and instead of comforting the victim because of there hardware fail the choose to do what ever they can to blame them inorder to defend there company.

I'm glad I have patience. I'm thinking of using my money on this new 360. There are 3 reports but that could dramatically increase or decrease. But isn't this the only 360 Slim that is actually dead? Weren't the others just getting constant ventilation problem errors? I'm still on edge about this...

What else is sad is the people bringing YLOD because hey cant handle the news. YLOD is barely a problem. All my friends have had RROD and i can support Gamertags of those people. None of my friends with PS3's have any problems. ( Unless you count someone buying a 3.5in HDD not knowing you needed 2.5in. But thats beside the point. Fanboys = Fail, all the timeeeeeee.

This may be true, but you can't ignore the fact that in terms of the entire lifecycle of the console the slim is a very very late generation model. :P

Who's turning on the person, and who's defending the company ?

I've had a 360 fail this gen (dvd drive) and a PS3 fail this gen (BR drive) its a fact that all electronics fail, and its sad to see fanboys trying to turn what appears to be atm fairly normal failure rates into another RROD. If it is another RROD then time will tell, but atm its far from it.

i thought they fixed this? it turns out the 360 slim is a 360 elite with a shiny casing.

and to the 2nd poster, it NOT a 3% fail rate, if you poll the 360 owners here, and if they answer honestly it will be around 50%, most people are on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th console.

Wow, even after several revisions the Xbox 360 is still suffering from failures. Are Microsoft incompetent or what? :? They can't even build a system that doesn't overheat.

Okay, the post that this came from was deleted. I'm thinking that they didn't want to start a flame war as poetntial buyers don't want to hear about their consoles possible failures at all and this thread would definately start trouble. That or maybe the thread starter was too beligerent about it, or maybe he deleted it himself I don't know. But the youtube video is still there. He went on about his mom worked for a NY Times affiliate at one point in another thread that was deleted ( I have no idea how old he is ) and that this would " be in the news " if he didn't get a response from MS. While that is ridiculously silly and self centered thinking, I can understand his pain.

So are alot of people it seems. Besides, the x360 has never been less than 25% failure rate. After 2 hours is just ridiculous.

GramDubs
The 3% failing rate was in regards to the 360 slim and NOT the overall 360 units because we all know that that number is much higher than 3%. However, it's sad how it's probably a year since 54% fail rate was put out and proven to be nonfactual (It was a poll meaning that people who don't own the system can voice their opinions and people can double vote as well) and you are still using it. The percentage is very very high for a product but 50% is an over exaggeration.

the reliability is now around that of the PS3 but unfortunately every RDOD the X360 S has simply from the law of averages is going to be far more scrutinized. Doesnt bother me I know mine runs very well and will for a long time

Apparently this particular model had an issue before it was even turned on. Something must have shorted out, or the HDD might have crashed from something on the previous HDD? No one should be too surprised by this, mostly because it was just 2 hours in, showing that it wasn't caused by overheating, but rather than something else that obviously inst wide spread. I have heard of PS3's shipping out dead on arrival, its just how technology is sometimes.

THis is why I hold off for at least 3-4 months before I purchase any new hardware device, gadget, etc. There is something bound to happen.. My 3 month old Xbox 360 has served me well so there's no use for me to go through the hassle of buying the new slim version. At least not until September.

I had 2 PS3s ylod on me in the first 2 months of owning one. Gamestop was awesome about it though got it replaced immediately and even replaced the game inside.

EDIT I actually just realized I had every next gen console replaced 2 times.

The first time my wii broke was my fault though kept tripping on the sensor bar wire.

.. I don't see how this says anything one way or another about the Xbox360.. There is always a failure rate on compoenents for around 3 to 5% .. I don't care who you are.. Its going to take more then a few horror stories.. Because you can basically find those for any electronic product regardless of how reliable it is.. We are going to need more then just that to prove that the new Xbox360 has a high defective rate.

Quit making up excuses, the 360 slim may have a new look, but it has the same old hardware.

Will it is a first gen 360 slim model. Its only to be expected. NEVER BUY FIRST GEN. First gen ps3s are ylod (due to heating and cooling of system over the years causing cracks in BGA) Firt gen 360s have such poor ventelation it fries gpu.Foliage-King

SUREE u did, yeaaaaa, ah huh, yup, okayyyy

if this is true, then you must be playing in a boiler room, the main reason a console fails is overheating

I've heard of 3 reports on the internet, now that is tiny in comparison so far to the first 360, and your bound to get fanboys trying to bloat this up. I would most definitely say it's only a small amount of people being effected.

Wow, even after several revisions the Xbox 360 is still suffering from failures. Are Microsoft incompetent or what? :? They can't even build a system that doesn't overheat.

WhenCicadasCry
Hardware is going to have failures. You see MS suffers from original 360 because now anyone who gets a failure is going to report it. So it looks worse than it probably is.

[QUOTE="Toniofalcon_"]

From Xbox "New Xbox 360" Forums

All hardward I don't care what it is has a 3%+ failure rate. Maybe he simply fell into that 3%.

3% is an accepted industry standard. Hardware failure rates will vary from product to product, and revision to revision.
