IMO, Sony's debut Playstation 1 was um....infinitely more impressive. A company of roughly the same size basically broke into the industry, manipulated it like putty, and spat out something that was roughly equivalent to market domination before falling flat on its face two years ago.
And Nintendo's NES debut....you pretty much can't paint a more glowing picture than that. They made this ridiculous landscape become a one-console portal to Mario happytown. I unfortunately missed that era by maybe half a decade, but even so, I and everyone else remember it with fondness and reverence. It was the birth of gaming, just like the Playstation 1 debut was the birth of modern gaming.
Microsoft was basically spitting out garbage until two years ago when it made a console whose hardware was garbage and whose software support was pathetic, then threw out a bunch of cash and made it awesome. Then, a year later, it spat out some more cash and made it even more amazing, and year over year, that's pretty much the mode.
I'm not very surprised that a console went from second place last gen to second place this gen....it's pretty much in the same position as last gen, except that it's almost ready to get overtaken by PS3, it's higher-priced cousin, which came out with garbage software, constant delays of third-party titles which were frequently mediocre, and first-party titles that rarely hit an aggregate review score over 8.5 even today.
I'm really not impressed. It has a phenomenal software lineup, yeah. But its sales performance is lacking, it's not that amazing compared to PS3, PC, or Wii in terms of good exclusive software, and IMO, it's a waste of time and money in so many ways.
It's an awesome console to own, and, sure, to buy, especially now.
But I fail to acknowledge the OHMIGAW and especially fail to acknowledge this beautiful sunrise with epic bloom you seem to be seeing in Microsoft.
Explain the Square Enix 360 exclusive fiasco with anything other than "LoL they opened their fat wallets and..."
That and exclusive GTA IV DLC. LoL.
Wii owns the world, PS3 has been pwning 360 in Japan and PAL practically since launch, and its been selling pretty much equal to 360 for all of 2008...at this rate, PS3 will exceed 360 on month-over-month sales and there will be no reason to scream about its performance outside of having a great library. Even that might change. IDK.

sorry but its unfair to compare sales from generation to generation. Different economies, competition, time frames... so many different variables that go into a consoles sales cycle its rediculous. The XBOX was a great start. The 360 is Microsoft coming in to their own. They've pulled off some amazing magic in a very short time. Good for them.
Yes, through money, they have guaranteed an effective development cycle....along with ease of development, PC portability, and release in 2005....
I wouldn't call it magic. Seriously.
NES and PS1 are by far the most amazing console releases that come to memory. The 360 is undeniably one of the most solid consoles ever created, but I'm not standing in awe of their "accomplishment." Even the PSP is a stunner in terms of stealing market share from a dominant body, and that has garbage software support and half the stuff the XBox 360 has that should guarantee success. Take Virtua Fighter 5 for instance. It has online support on 360 and doesn't on PS3. Take Ace Combat, Star Ocean 4, Mistwalker, and Last Remnant into consideration. Then take a look back at Japanese market share. Realize how ridiculously Fail the Xbox 360 is compared to what it should be.
Why are people buying Wiis? Why are people buying PS3s? Why don't they buy Xbox 360s? I can't figure it out. Yeah, they made an amazing console, but when the much-maligned PSP can do MUCH more in a MUCH shorter timeframe with MUCH less disposable income, so on and so forth, in the generation of release in what is essentially a monopoly....why are we discussing this, anyway?
doesn't really mean much if they fall to sony after a year long head start and what was hailed in 2007 and a lineup comproable to 98. and company is good just becuase it it spends a few moments on top it's good if it gets and stays thereRagashahs
exactly another 3rd place finish
... and your dislike of lemmings and fanboy rants, you should be able to say that Microsoft, in the span of one console, has gone from the new kid on the block to fighting head to head (for second place, but fighting none the less) with the former #1 guy. Despite any feelings you have, thats a pretty big accomplishment. And it happened over only one console gen.Senor_Kami
when Sony was the new kid in the block they wiped out the competition...
360 should be commended they stole the ps3's thunder and are leading it in hardware and software sales in only one gen.Gh0st_Of_0nyx
Does anyone here remember the Wii? Certainly you.
What's the last game on Wii you bought? Have you bought any thirdparty titles on Wii?
And yet it's selling like gangbusters. Don't you think Gamecube-to-Wii is a little more impressive than Xbox-to-Gamecube, especially for this generation?
Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 has practically everything good under the sun, first and third party titles, and it sells like garbage by comparison.
Microsoft has ridiculous amounts of money, I didnt doubt they would go head to head with Sony or Nintendo.
They can stomach a billion dollar hit on faulty hardware, because they're MS. You think Sega could have done that?
I give them credit with Xbox Live though, that's the best thing they brought to the gaming industry.
Microsoft is the best company in the business. They're the reason gaming still exists. I bow before them, for they are greatness.BioShockOwnz

Um.....no way.
Haha, I'm prettysure that was sarcasm.
I was hoping you'd say that.
I'm trying to think of the stuff they've done....beyond basically contracting out good hardware (and then manufacturing it poorly this gen), making a good online infrastructure, buying up talented studios, and nailing exclusives....Iono what it is they've even accomplished in terms of gaming.
I think we can all agree to give that honor to Nintendo anyway.
Compared to Sony and Nintendo's debut's Microsoft was coming into a much more competitive and difficult market. The NES had no serious competitors when it released, and considering how much Sega and Nintendo (and tons of others, for that matter) dropped the ball in the mid-90s, what with Sega's add-ons eating away goodwill and Nintendo's decision to isolate third parties and use cartridges, all Sony had to do was get a reasonable amount of developer support and release at a decent price, and the market was theirs to take. On the other hand, Microsoft has faced competitors in the last two generations where at least one of them knew what they were doing.
I wouldn't say their success is incredible or anything. They're doing pretty well, almost in spite of their problems. It's not great, but it's not really worse than Nintendo or Sony's debuts.
Ah 1998. StarCraft, Half Life, Metal Gear, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Dreamcast in Japan, Gran Turismo, GRand Theft Auto 1, Amongsts other goodiesSumotaiiOh, DC was really that long ago, seems like about 5 years to me.
remember when sony crushed nintendo with its first console? yeah, thats right. sony wins again. also: mgs4.NaiKoN9293
I dunno... Nintendo pretty much destroyed themselves so it isn't quite a fair comparison.

Fighting head to head? You do realize that the PS3 is outselling the 360 world wide and has every single month since launch. While PS3 sales remain strong and growing, the 360 saw a significant sales DECREASE in 2007 compared to 2006 and is still only selling equal to what the original Xbox sold. Meanwhile, the 360 relies on NA for roughly 60% of its total world wide sales, and for 4/5 months this year, they have lost to the PS3 according to official NPD numbers.
That doesn't even count the fact that at the end of 2008, the PS3 could very well have caught up to the 360 in terms of total sales, making the "headstart" a moot point.

This completely inaccurate rant is paid in full by your friends at Sony. Sony, where "next year is the year" happens.

You said you'd leave if MGS4 got 10 :(
Let me find that quote.
I don't see why everyones complaining about the 360. It has amazing games, xbox lives a blast to play, and MS has a big wallet landing console exclusives and games like DMC4 and GTA4 which I never thought would be released day one on both 360 and PS3.xXHackettXx
I agree. Xbox 360 is for Western Hardcore gamers in my eyes.

Jeez dude, there were consoles before the NES.And there was the Vic 20 and the C64 at the time. And to be honest, I enjoyed those a HELL of a lot more. I hate when people give Nintendo credit for starting gaming when people were gaming for a full decade before the release of the NES
Last gen Microsoft came in late and tried to compete with Nintendo and Sony, it worked. This gen Microsoft dominates North America, but no one cares about them anywhere else. Honestly I dont care about the rest of the world. I don't want to play with someone in China or Japan. I don't want to play any games made in China or Japan. I want to play with all my buddies (I dont mind playing with the blokes over in the U.K or some of the yanks). Where I live (Canada) everyone of my buddies have a 360, and/or orginal Xbox, or PS2, nothing else. Believe me price is not an issue with the sexy PS3. Microsoft owns the market where I live. They own North America, that is a huge accomplishment by Microsoft.
Now I know Microsoft sucks everywhere else in the world. When it comes down to it, if you live in one place and speak one language and play a 360, why would you care about what a person in a totally different place speaking a totally different language plays. Honestly?
