http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/01/24/italian_court_rules_mod_chips/

Now this has been news in quite long time now...However it made me think: Sony after this legal debacle made PS3 region free to not allow modchips to be legalised...

Why M$ made Xbox360 region locked even if its ONE game (which its not)? Didnt they know that case of PS2? ANd the most important thing is that Italy or EU in general isnt a backwater poor place its quite wealthy and all this wealth will be lost if 360 modchips legalise and people rent and copy games or even download....

The console may sell well piracy even pushes more machines to be sold...however the software sales will get a huge hit if modchips legalise and being sold/installed on high street at daylight...

Who wants to pirate 25 gig ps3 games? 50 gig ps3 games are on the way. I think this is why ps3 games arent being pirated as of yet.

Anyway the procedure making it read the copied DVD9...If another court rules again that region locking is the reason to allow consoles run copied games...it would be Pndora's box opening for M$...

1. Today's x360 exploits don't allow region unlocking.

2. Most games released recently seems to be region free.

The legality of modchips don't have anything to do with region unlocking or whatever, you own the hardware and can do what you want with it. You are not doing anything illegal until you run pirated software (yes, backups of games you own are legal) on your system, at least not in most countries in Europe.

that doesnt make sense. Why? I own my xbox 360 I can modify any way I want to. Now on the other hand, if I start charging other people money to hack their xbox I could be in trouble. See how things work?

Both 360 and PS3 are region free. But companies have the option of putting software region locks on games if they want to.

Mod chip were legalised here in Australia a couple of years ago. Besides, there is nothing to stop devs from region locking PS3 software, It has allready happened, I cannot import Straglehold for the PS3 becuase it is region locked and the uncharted demo is region locked.

Then we can all expect same court action...Hell if modchips are legal in Australia people just can get their Xbox360 chipped and ready to play copied DVD9s rent copy and play...

um there are region free games on the 360 aswell

its up to the publisher if they wanna region lock their game or not

and as of yet there are no chips or ways to mod a 360 to avoid region lock so i cant see how that is a argument to make chips legal

The problem that is presented by region free games is that some area may have a different publish for the game. E.g, Square may pubilsh there own game in America, but in Austrlia they might be publish by Ubisoft (wich they are). Making the game region free is not good new sfor Ubisoft Australia as it eats in on there profits. Games in PAL regions often have a different publisher to thier Amircan versions.

uncharted demo was un-region locked. they said it was an error and they fixed it.

Most games release only a few days later in the Uk for 360 anyway so its not a big deal. Even then some are region free. The one console that does concern me with regions is the Wii. All the games are region locked from what I gather and Ninty frequently leave big gaps between the US and Uk releases. To my great annoyance Medal Of Honor seems like it might be the next one to do this.

It will be quite sad to see wii modchips legalised and people chipping their machines at daylight in highstreet shops...piracy will run rampant...

This thread again? People dont chip xbox 360s for the most part anyway, so who cares? Do a little bit of research and you will see that most people who modify there xbox 360s dont use any modchips. And again, the reason nobody mods ps3s is because the games are on Blu-Ray discs which are still very expensive not to mention the games themselves are huge.
