Do you guys remember the good old days? Back when retail outlets didn't rip open products and take things out of them. Back when DLC were just three random letters that had nothing to do with further purchases you would be making after the game already came out. Back when companies didn't put a whole lot of intrusive software with your games. Back when games were barely marketed. Back when only a few people you knew played video games. Back when people just made games for people to play and not for their company to make bank.

It seems every week, I hear of some company doing another shady thing. Whether it be Gamestop and their copies of Deus Ex: HR, EA and Origin's spyware-ish-ness (which really doesn't bother me personally too much, but I can see why it does for others), or anything else.

It seems that no console is safe from this 'profit' focused push, and it seems PC is just as vulnerable. Maybe it has just been the past week or two... Well, I hope things get back to normal soon.

The good old days weren't always good, and tommorrow's not as bad as it seems. Don't focus on negativity my friends. Take the good things of today and enjoy them, there is metric crapton of perfectly good titles out there, not just big name AAAAAAAAAAAERFFAS exclusives, but everyday bargains for $10-$20 waiting to be found on a shelf and enjoyed.

I don't remember any 'good old days' but I do remember when games didn't take huge budgets. Sad people seem to forget how cost effective and beautiful 2D looks on the isometric viewpoint or how some ambient and good writing can tell a story.

Heh, like Whiteblade said, gaming has higher budgets nowadays for products than it did before. It means less emphasis on stuff like stories and more emphasis on graphics and rushing the title out to pay for the extreme amount of money it costs to develop. Long development time is only possible for companies that have been established for a really, really long time or else they fail.

Yes. I also remember when 5 fps was an acceptable framerate, good games came out once every 6 or so months and gamers had to make the best of the games they had (in that games didn't offer much content).

Over exaggeration much? 5 fps has never been an acceptable frame rate. Good games came out in the same frequency as now; mostly fall and winter releases followed by a summer drought. And games offered plenty of content if not more considering today's penchant for 5 hours campaigns.

Exaggeration or not, you must not have played many N64/PS games. Games like Driver 2 became a slideshow at points... and gamers (including myself) were more then willing to forgive them.

I remember the good old days when game breaking glitches couldn't be patched so would never be fixed often forcing you to delete your save file and prey your next one has no problems.

Yes I remember "the good old days"...Cartridge games with no DLC...which cost you £40 and lasted two hours in many cases. With simplistic gameplay, where true 3D was a distant gleam in someone's eye. Where controllers were on a wire and multiplayer involved you and one friend, unless you bought an extra peripheral so you could do four player. Oh and the concept of second hand gaming wasn't quite the same. You could buy old games....for £40.

Or we could go earlier than that if people like, because the days I just described were better than them. The point is, with new technology comes new concepts and potential. Things are getting better every gen, and people are left with minor quibbles like DLC on games which last far longer than they used to and cost less especially when bought a few months after release. The only real thing that has changed for the worst is the amount of petulant whingers we seem to have today.

There has always been that. Sega vs Nintendo was even worse than the stuff you see today. I couldn't careless about the past of video games. Gaming is much, much better than it was back then.

Meh there has been alot of crap released now sure. But there was alot of crap released back in the day too. Sure, we have stuff like Kinect now, but back in the day we had silly stuff like the powerglove and the Virtual Boy, etc.

When thinking about the "good ol' days", it''s always about people looking back at their childhoods, which for many people, were more fun than adulthood. When looking back at out childhoods, we remember much more cimplistic, worry free times, and therefore more fun times, hence why when looking back at the games of old we tend to have more positive feelings, since we played them when life was easier and more fun; it's mu ch easier to remember all the good games and ignore the bad games. When looking at games of today, people tend to have more of a negative outlook, because due to have more responsibilities, more worries, life is just alot more stressful and not quite as magical as it used to be. So then people associate games of today with being not as good, since life itself just isn't as good in general for us; and thus people tend to look more at the bad games or bad stuff happening in the industry and firget the god stuff.

This isn't the case for everyone, of course, but I can't help but feel this applies to a good amount of people who complain about gaming or anything really not being as good as they were in the 90's or whatever. Nolstalgia is a cruel, harsh thing, really. I'm sure in the year 2020 there will people our age complaining abut how great the 2000's were, because for those people the 2,000's were when their childhood took place, and thus was when there "magical times" toook place.

Good old days : Playing blocky Atari2600 games after school, back then I didn't care, I played everything from Pacman to Pitfall to Frogger, and even games everyone said were terrible like E.T. and Golf. Most of the time found these games in the bargain bins for $5-$10 and begged my dad until he bought them. These games were generally the same map over and over, at most 1-2 hours in length, and I played the hell out them for years. The highlight of my day was always coming home from school, being forced to do my homework until dad got home, and then I could sit at the Atari until bedtime, which was around 9pm. Internet? We had sneakernet. By the time of the C64 the lucky ones also had a 300 baud modem to type messages at each other on a BBS. Games looked like this : By comparison the stuff we have to play today is magical, breathtaking, and if you had told me 20 years ago that I'd be sitting in my own house playing multiplayer games that look this good, I would have thought you were crazy.

It seems that no console is safe from this 'profit' focused push

arto1223
This has always been the case dont kid yourself. They might have gotten better at it but they were always out for profit. Personally I remember the bad old days, when games were released that were so buggy they were unplayable, and game help could only be obtained by ringing a premium rate number. When the choice og good games was so limited you could pretty much name all of them off the top of your head.

Back when people just made games for people to play and not for their company to make bank.

arto1223

Games have always been around to make money the better they are the more they sell, unless they are free. Same with the internet .com means commercial, Television is also out there to make money, the better the show, the more people will watch, which means more people will see the commercials which means more $$$.

P.S yes the era of games you speak of were quite nice.

Gamers now just have to be smart with their money and check exactly WHAT they're buying. For all most 16+under gamers know, they're buying a game that is basically a carbon copy of an older game that executed that genre much better! I hardly buy games that are 1 year and younger for the most part, only because I wait for reviews and patches to come out for these games that are released broken....

Cherokee_Jack

This is just like people believing that content being cut from games only happened in this generation. back before the internet, all designers had these lofty visions of what a game would be like. But they all faced the same limitations of finances, resources, and time restrictions, so at the end of the project something had to be let go. It's just like big budget movies, some scenes being filmed and then cut, or some that never get shot, but we see the story boards for them in the DVD/Blu Ray special features. Only back then before there was a venue to release that later, what ended up on the cutting room floor stayed there.

And it's only now that this content removed for what ever limitations were an obstacle to the developers (money, resoucres, time), is able to be released later, that gamers are more aware of it, and find right to complain about it. If this were still the 8bit and 16bit cartridge days, that cut content would never see the light of day and no one would even be aware of it in the first place.

Sure there are some shady practices with Day 1 DLC (and even then you have good uses of it where it's FREE and implemented to encourage new game sales), but making blanket statements that DLC in general is the root of all gaming evil is naive.

As for TC's assertion that there was some golden age when game makers never cared for profit.... just when DID this mythical age exist?? :? You really think Nintendo in the 8bit days, or Sega, or even Atari and Colecovision companies never wanted to turn a profit for the products they were putting on store shelves? Seriously? :|
