Remember all the Bethesda hate? Apparently, Oblivion was terrible game, despite it scoring a 9.6. But all things considered, it could've been because it was the first next generation WRPG with amazing graphics and such. That, and the 360 didn't have many good games at the time.

People CONSTANTLY bashed Bethesda. I could hardly believe how much they were bashed for a single game. It's like Daggerfall, Morrowind, Arena, and the like next existed. The game before Oblivion was Morrowind, and that seemed to be well receive. So I don't understand why everyone turned their backs on Bethesda so soon for one mistake that probably wasn't even that terrible. Let me remind you that Nintendo has had its fair share of iffy's. I'm not just talking about Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast, Wii Music, Geist, and such. I'm talking about Zelda II, Super Mario Brothers II, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and a few more.

Here comes along Fallout 3 announcements, and everyone claims, "Oblivion with guns!" The threads really irk the hell out of me because in every single one of them you have a long time Fallout fan that sarcastically praises Fallout 3 and Bethesda to the high heavens. Then someone can't detect the sarcasm and says, "This game looks stupid," or something to that effect. The moron that thinks he's being clever then goes, "How dare you detest the ingenious ideas of our Lord, Bethesda, and its our savior, Fallout 3." And yada, yada. Basically, I've never seen a video game with such high production values and winning so many E3 awards get bashed this much. Not even close have I seen this.

Fallout 3 comes out and... it delivers. Yup, apparently most people here love it. It gets good reviews and "doesn't totally ruin the Fallout name."

So why has Bethesda suffered all this hate? They made ONE bad game, that I've heard of, that people won't let go of. I was just sick of people bashing them so much, as if they were Data Design or something.

No, I've never played a Bethesda game to my knowledge, but I've heard what these games are like from these here forums.

What do you guys think of all the Bethesda hate? Justified? Annoying? Meh-ish? What?

Super Mario Bros. 2 and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes were both great games despite being a little different than others in their respective series.

I didn't mean to say they were bad games.

But I think Super Mario Brothers 2 and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is to the Super Mario Brothers series/Metroid series what Oblivion is to the Elder Scrolls series. Does that make sense, or should I elaborate? Not trying to be mean by that, just so you know. Sorry if it sounds "cold."

I thought people loved Oblivion? I'm sorry for ignorance since I wasn't part of next gen gaming until earlier this year so I wasn't on forums and gaming sites like am I am today.

So wow, I am quite shocked at this, I was talking to some people about Oblivion and they were urging me to get it, calling it one of the finest RPG's ever.

The hate for Bethesda lately has divided once again, but this time most being from the PS3 side since 'we' got the weakest and inferior of Fallout 3 even though I have yet to play it and judge for myself.

I now have a better understanding of your definition of "iffy". :P I personally think Oblivion was better than Morrowind but that's just my opinion.

I think your facts are a little off. People loved Oblivion. Die Hard Fallout fans hate Fallout 3 because they "dumbed it down to an Oblivion with guns." It would be like taking your fav FPS and turning it into a light gun game

It's kind of weird. Oblivion was liked be a good amount before Fallout 3 was announced, but ever since it was people have all of a sudden started hating on it. I mean maybe it is just me though (havn't been a gamespot member for very long).

I've always hated it. What am I supposed to do, retract that? Go back and put on my Love glasses? More like Tolerance glasses.

Fallout 3 may or may not be a good game. All I can say is that the reviews for Oblivion were totally bogus.

Just wait until Robbie gets his hands on the game and tells us what the truth about the game actually is.

Oblivion was a quite boring and dull IMO. I have no interest in Fallout 3. I guess Bethesda isn't for me.

Bethesda deserved all the hate its gotten for Oblivion imo.

But they REALLy surprised me with Fallout3. I am a HUGE fan of fallout1 and 2 and this game had me sooo worried. Im so glad Bethesda made a good game and didnt ruin the fallout name.

Everything about Fallout3 and better then Oblivion imo.

I gave Oblivion a 7.5 and Fallout a 9, so people who hated Oblivion should still give Fallout3 a go, its ALOT better.

Oblivion did suck.

Especially as an Elder Scrolls game, and role playing game.

Fallout 3 is a good game no doubt.

As far as im concerned the Fallout 3 cynacism and Oblivion hate was justified.

Hyping the game after the travesty that was Obliv warrent such a reception.

What I wonder is why anybody liked Bethesda in the first place. People talk about their great history of RPGs, but I doubt that many people here have actually played Arena or Daggerfall. Neither of them were particularly good, nor were they complex RPGs - more like dungeon crawlers. Black Isle, Bioware, Interplay and Troika were the companies that really advanced the WRPG. Bethesda has really only made one good game, Morrowind, which borrows heavily from the work of those developers.

to be honest, i didnt like oblivion after playing morrowind, but i dont hate bethesda. theyre a business and theyre out to make money, so i cant blame them for dumbing down the game to get more people to play it.

I actually kind of liked Oblivion. It wasn't exactly a 9.6 game, it had way too many obvious problems to be rated that high, but I rather decently enjoyed it. I'm actually not enjoying Fallout 3 as much, though. It's not even the "bad RPG elements" that aren't good, I just find the combat to be kinda lame for a game based around action...

I agree the comabt is pretty bad. They knew it was bad but decided to ignore it. You have to be 100% dependent on Vats because aiming is terrible and the real time combat is no fun.

Oblivion deserved all the hate that it got. There's no question about that, in my opinion.

As for Fallout 3, I've heard that it's an alright RPG (terrible writing, but at least they fixed some of Oblivion's flaws). Still, I've also heard that it's not much of a Fallout game, so I'm not particularly interested in it.

Oh, and I hate Bethesda for consolising Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Also, they're just an evil, underhanded corporation in general (silencing negative criticism, and all that).

Bethesda angered with Oblivion because of how stroked I was for that one game, how much I wanted to play it. I spent my time and money on being able to play it and it failed in my eyes miserably as what they promised me.

Well said TC.

Bethesda bashers made it sound as if Oblivion was the worst game of the current gen, where in reality, it isn't bad at all and I actually really enjoyed it. And this is without using mods and all. The only real problem with Oblivion was the levelling system and how other monsters leveled with you. Other than that, I thought it was fantastic. And now, Bethesda comes out and produces an absolute masterpiece in Fallout 3. I think this is more than enough to silence the critics.

Bethesda deserved what it has coped over oblivion and fallout 3, fans shouldn't sit idly by and let companies make games that they don't enjoy playing with already established franchises, if they succeed then power to them but if they fail like with the changes they made to oblivion then damn them for it..

The majority of the gamers noticed the flaws with oblivion it wasn't something that you could play without noticing if you had played the previous games, new people might have loved it but everyone else found it lacking in comparison to previous games in the series.
