remember back in the 90's, sega and nintendo both had amazing games......both was great amazing systems. so much variety with games, i mean u wasn't going to find alot of clones on the same system like now. i mean back then it was hard not to own both, but now and days...besides tha wii, 360 and ps3 damn near have identical games and unless ur a blu ray freak, and thats kin on tha small amount of exlusives ur pretty much playing THE SAME games on both systems. it also seemed like it was ALOT more developers in the mix making high quality games, now u only gotta few, like infinidy ward, ea, just to name a couple, and they're games EVERY year is pretty much the same......gaming just isn't like how it used to be, i miss it. N64, dreamcast, & ps1 was some amazing systems...the graphics may not been anywhere near as nice, but they had ALOT of high quality games, now and days its only a few.....

You don't even need a good computer, the amount of Indie games is staggering. Plus considering the 20+ years of BC, you could get by with an average computer.

I hate playing old games. They just don't live up to today's standard. If I go back and play an old game that I've never played before. I find it completely terrible, the controls graphics, everything is bad. but if its one of my old favorites then I could play it no problem.

Same her man, but I must say I'm enjoying the heck out of a lot of those older RPG and Adventure titles.

Yeah I remember when all you could choose either 2D sidescrollers OR 2D top down games, man what a choice. I remember either playing sidescroller platformers AND top down RPG's, and man that was one choice too many for me!

If you can't tell I'm being sarcastic, its obvious you are nostalgic but games today have significantly more variety than ever before except maybe during the PS2 era. Sure there are fond memories associated with those games, but in the end its stupid to say something like that when you had like 2 choices back in the 90's.

I actually find a lot of RPG scale down compared to a lot of older titles. IT seems like the todays norm is just to release shallow Action RPGs with little variety in customization.

I just played Banjo Tooie. That game has aged magnificently. It has tighter controls than many games today and the graphics are still very easy to look at. On Topic: I think there is still plently of variety its just the big sellers that seem generic. Look at Mirror's Edge or Portal, and then all of those great niche games on Wii, DS or XBLA

I don't remember a lot of variety on NES or Sega when I was young. It was fighter or 2d scroller. Some scrollers were shooters, some were platformers, and almost all were games I never completed due to being extremely timing intensive, which I hate.

I think variety is getting better each gen, as the tech allows for more perspectives and, in the case of this gen, new inputs.

There are actually very many, you have to remember that back then the FF games were the gold standard and those games didn't have too much in the way of customization. Dragon Age, Demon's Souls, Fable II/III, Fallout... these games like them or not are amazing and very deep RPG's presented in very different ways, Demon's Souls in particular gives an old school feel without any of the negative or dated features (except maybe the restart the whole level thing, but thats more of a deliberate design decision).

I mean, you really don't even have genre distinctions anymore since games are getting so mixed, such as Bioshock and the mentioned Fallout games. Look at Modern Warfare 2, a game considered to be a dumbed down military FPS and yet it has so many features from RPG's its insane. You can actually upgrade your damn perks, its an RPG system stuffed into a shooter that could never be called an RPG yet back then a game would be one genre and thats it. No shooter/explorer/racing/RPG mixes to be found then.

I'm looking past the Ff games. I mean older Balck Isle titles (older CRPGs in general). THere a lot of shooters with more in depth RPG elements compared to CoD MW2 that came out a while back (System Shock titles, Deus Ex 1)

generalizing a bit much i think. Yeah platformers and RPGs WERE popular at the time but you can't ignore all the fantastic sports games, fighting games, simulation, strategy, and other games that don't really fit a genre. You may only remember those two but i think most people never ran out of different types of games to play back then, IF they wanted to look for them.

You mean when every game was just a different character running and jumping on things. Most gens have a genere that dominates. Last gen seemed to be the most varied.

There's more variety now than ever. I just read the Super Meat Boy review and I was thinking how cool it is that old-school style games are getting so much love nowdays. Between XBLA, WiiWare/VC, Steam/D2D, and PSN store there are so many retro reborn type games it's nothing short of amazing.

Even your standard fullsize games have unbelievable variety. Great time to be a gamer.

More exclusives does not equal more games. I've been gaming 33 years and the variety and quality is higher than its ever been (partly thanks to the introduction of indie games to console via XBL and PSN).

Of course, we view gaming with very different perspectives. The modern CoD (with their disregard for competitive balance) remind me a lot of the old MK games ('I nuked you' vs 'I bit off your head').

*Shakes head* Also, EA is a publisher not a developer.

Nostalgia is killing your memory. The video game industry is the same way it was then, all about the money, which meant whatever was successful would get cloned to death. There were TONS of clones of popular franchises like Super Mario, Double Dragon, and other games.

One thing you are also forgetting is how BROKEN many of these games were. There were so many glitches and cheap Bosses. Not to mention the fact you had to beat the game in one play through and you had limited continues. Not the baby "Game Over" screen we have now where you can just hit retry. I mean the REAL "Game Over" screen that meant you are starting all the way from the BEGINNING. That's why cheat codes were so prevalent.

There is plentyof variety in gaming, but just like in previous gens, you have to look for it and try games that may not be advertised in your gaming mag or on TV.

remember the early 90's when gaming had so much variety? you could get a platformer with a plumber or a platformer with a cat or a platformer with a bandicoot or a bear or a stork!

man all that variety, boy i sure miss those days.

With all due respect, the snes and genesis--continuing from nes sms--were FLOODED with platformers, and other copycat games. I'm not putting down their respected libraries by any means, just that it wasn't the different from the way it is today. IMO, the real difference is in the quality of game design. There was more of a craft in structuring difficulty back in the 90s, where games were entertainment, but also a form of workout for the brain. These days games--because of them becoming popular by mainstream standards--have gone the way of instant gratification entertainment. Obviously there are exceptions, but for the most part I find that to be the case. For example, I just downloaded Super Meat Boy(demo only) and it in no way deserves a 9.5. If this game was released back in the 90s, it would be considered a below average game--maybe a 6.0 or 6.5.

Couldn't agree more, SNES days were plagued with platformers with a lot of weird characters, trying to hard to be the next Mario and the next Sony.

N64 era was all about 3D platformers trying to be the next SM64.

Like you said, i'm not saying they were bad times because i freaking love the games, but there is always a genre that prevails in each gen, last gen was more about JRPGs, now is more about FPS, if you want variety you just need to know what games you buy.

+1 and thank you, that sums up how I feel perfectly.

if that is all you could find to play in the 90s, assuming you even did, you missed out on some truly great games.

Gaming is still varied, the market is just saturated with shooters, as it was with platformers in the 8-bit era.

No, I actually don't.

If you're looking for variety then your best options would be a Wii or PC.

And if you don't have money for either then just keep an eye out for XBLA or PSN titles that look good.

Nes - Platformers

SNES - Platformers

PSX - JRPGs

PS2 - JRPGs

Xbox/360/PS3 - Shooters

Yeah, huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge difference :D

DeckardLee2010

I was also thinking something similar.

But probably the only real one that was full of any of those was the NES. Every other I believe it's just people bashing by default.

Games are a huge investment and gamble these days. Companies don't want to experiment and take chances with their money. You see many more sequels these days and clones of successful franchises, all for the hope of a bigger return on their investment.

i think it has more to do with release times, ps2 was drowning in games, i love my 360, but sometimes there seems to be a general lack of other genre's except shooters, i mean new games though, and i know if i go to ps3 it will be a similar experience, granted ratchet and clank is very tempting
