I wonder if there will ever be another mmorpg with as large a fan base as WOW. Every month in my Gameinformer, wow is top 1 or 2 pc game sold. With a somewhat outdated graphics engine, you wonder just how long WOW can keep going.

Honestly, I think Blizzard is going to hold the MMO monopoly unless someone can make a really ground breaking game. I think the game to shatter WoW, is going to be another Blizzard MMO.

I'm still holding out for WAR also but i don't see it as casual friendly as WoW.

also to the TC. the WoW graphics engine was dated at launch. it's not the graphics that makes the game. the mmorpg genre is least effected by graphics.

War has the juggernaught of games workshops fanbase behind them. Its rather big.

It's not likely in the short to medium term, because two things have to happen:

Firstly, Blizzard needs to mess up. They need to make WoW so unattractive that people that have invested hundreds and thousands of hours and hard earned cash (and there are millions of them) are so fed up/bored that they want to jump ship. This needs to happen because in the MMORPG there is really only room for one WoW sized entity, since MMORPGs are so exclusive to competitors.

Secondly, a top notch developer needs to make a great MMORPG. This isn't completely unlikely, seeing as Bioware is rumoured to be working on a project, but it would really need to be both something quite new and remarkable, but also something accessible. Even if it was slightly better than WoW, that really isn't enough; people have invested so much into WoW that they need incentive to go somewhere else, as well as reason to leave.

Doesn't matter, MMORPG and subscription based gaming is a joke gone stale. If I fancy to participate in such games, there are other means.

it'll be big among the niche of warhammer fans and pvp/rvr/"hardcore" mmorpgers. (like my guild) but i don't believe it'll have the mass appeal of WoW. the only way that would happen is if these niche players influence a lot of WoW players to jump ship. Trust me i hope that many switch. it'll be more noobs for me and my guild to slaughter.

Guild Wars stole a few WoW-ers, right?
I think Guild Wars 2, if they can keep up with their promises, has the potential to take quite a few away because of no fees.

I'm still in dubio about WoW myself.. i'm glad i quit it, but there's a really lovely person i can't meet right now in any other way than on WoW..
Not fair.

everyone from warcraft 3 jumped to WoW. What made WoW interesting was because you get to visit a lot of the places and meet charactors from the original Warcraft game. That's one reason i think it's so popular.

The other reason, i believe, is because players are CONDITIONED to playing wow. A player does a quest, the player gains experience. The player gains experience, and levels up. The player now knows when he quests, he levels up. Come end game.. a Player runs dungeons, player defeats boss, player receives loot, player learns that running dungeon gets better loot.

Classic psychologyright at work here. Blizz conditioned WoWers to keep playing, they created a hungerthat can only be fulfilled by playing the game. It's like a drug, people are addicted to WoW.

More time invested = More rewards. When will it end?!

WoW took away way too much time, ever since stopping WoW, i've been doing a lot more constructive things.

I'd disagree that everyone from Warcraft 3 jumped to WoW, that's where a lot of the initial audience came from, but there's no way nearly 9 million people (and that's at the moment, not cumulative) were all WC3 players. WoW was suprisingly good at attracting people who had never played a MMORPG or Warcraft game.

Then i bet on WoW 2.
Warhammer may have great potential, but the series is seen as real nerdy and for weird dress-up people where i live. About the same as Magic cards. So it's kind of impossible for me to imagine its worldwide success.

lol no it´s not, I have such a hard time finding good games to play, I just don´t enojy anything anymore, and WoW complety blew me away, I don´t play anymore, wasted to much of my life on that game, but it's still one of those games that you can throw in thousands of hours and love every one of them. The community, pve, pvp, professions even the auction house are so addictive.

WoW is truly a beast in the industry. But remember back when everyone thought EQ would be around forever?SOE mishandled the crap out of that game and let Blizzard step in to take over. Who knows, maybe WoW will get trumped by something soon. I personally will be quitting if WAR ends up being good. The PVP sucks in WoW, but the PVE is super fun. I'd trade great PVE for great PVP any day.

A game to steal WOW players don't need to be a deep, inovative, revolutionary or something like that. WOW isn't. It's just an ADDICTIVE game, that everyone can play, and doesn't require ANY skills. And yes it is also a balanced, well made game.

WOW is slowly losing popularity, not in sheer numberrs...but WOW itself is growing slowery then the MMO industry...and even though WOW is still by far the most popular MMO...there are others, like Guild Wars and LOTR that are making very strong headway....

but Blizzard is smart....if needed, they will just release another MMO.

I just don't see WOW stopiing. I have a level 70 Hunter and working on a few more toons. The game is so damn crazy It would take a game from the gods to come down and stop it. One Bad thing ( there are many but here's one ) to me is the game SUCKS! at level 70!. You have to be in a guild at that mark. If not you can't do anything. If there was a game from the gods. It would be one where you can build yourself without the help of no one and it all came down to how much time u put into your toon. Guilds are great ( if you can find a great one) But WOW is built to much around needing people's help. These people are not helping me pay the bill so why should i need them in the game? Halo online is so damn big cause you can 1on1 the world. But say you needed 25 man halo team to do a level and that team was hard to find you would stop and look for something else.

I'm looking for something else....
