Microsoft may be the first to start a price war by the end of the summer. Nollenberger Capital Partners analyst Todd Greenwald tells GameDaily BIZ that he thinks MS will slash the 360's price (all SKUs) by $50. PS3, PS2 and PSP price cuts are likely to follow. More within...

Twiddle.  They sure are taking their time with these price cuts.  I'm surprised they're even planning on keeping the core around at this point.

Analyst... that part right there makes it lose ALL credibility... an analyst's credibility has been proven over the last couple of years, -especially- concerning the video game industry, to be non-existant.... seriously.... I think the price cut will happen around Christmas...  Or maybe next month!... either way would be good, lower price = higher demand, unless the demand is at its maximum for any reason....

Exactly what I was thinking. If Microsoft wants to sell their console to me this year and not next, they will have to come up with a pretty significant price cut, get those damn 65nm chipsets onto the market and at least include HDMI in all models. For me, HDMI is a convenience above all else.

They better lower it by $100 because there is no point in just $50

I agree with all but HDMI.

While I have an HDMI port, I have plenty of Component inputs as well, so whatever they want to do is fine.

Agreed, $50 is way to low... Especially with the 360 being almost 2 years old this year.

$100 is more reasonable. Not to mention, sales will increase by a large amount I'm sure.

I think I should have emphasized what I meant by "convenience". I personally hate reaching in behind my TV to undo five different leads, so one small slot is a hell of a lot better for me. Plus I am planning on buying a larger HD TV soon (42" 1080p Panasonic Viera - beautfiul), so HDMI will probably give me a significant picture quality boost on a screen that big. It's all about my future TV situation, not just now.

With 50$ the core will be at Wii price, and a 10000000000000000 times better machine, so why cut 100$ ?

A $100 price cut is probably way too costly for Microsoft... it doesn't make any sense.  As the above poster said, with the core going for the same price as the Wii and with the Premium only $100 more, it'll be a good price point.

MS really needs to get those 65nm chips into the 360. They need to kick this hardware failure in the butt soon.

Who's to say Wii will not drop it's price? Why not put the heat on Nintendo? Which I'm sure Wii will still spank the 360.

They arn't going to move as many units with a $50 drop, as they could with $100 drop.

The PS3 needs a $100 price cut more then the 360. I doubt either company will drop their system price $100. Maybe next year, but it won't happen this year.

That was one of Nintendo's strategies I believe. They priced the Wii at $250 to give them the ability to drop the price once the system stops selling before the units can make it to the shelves. The Core is not really a 360. It lacks the HDD which prevents the user from using any XBL features, which is a major part of the 360 experience. Microsoft should definitely have made the HDD standard on the 360.

Right, they'd move more units but they'd also probably be posting a loss per console.  Right now I believe MS is making a little over $50 per console.  With a $50 price cut they'll make a bit per console and then make all the other money from royalties.  If the consoles were $100 cheaper they'd be running a deficit again... so selling more consoles doesn't always mean more money.

The price cut will be AFTER halo 3 most likely, since halobots will be willing to shell out the extra 50 bux for the console to play it.

With Halo 3 and many other games like Mass Effect and Bioshock on the way. They are going to gain a large profit. They can use it to counter the effects of $100 price drop.

They are making a profit on every 360 sold now, so they could do it. Their software sales have been high as well, so they are steadily getting out of the red. A $50 price drop won't hurt them. Sony's PS3 is a different story all together.

That would make the price discrepancy between 360 and PS3 huge. Sony must surely follow suit quickly.

50 dollars is a big deal u guys...think about it. The elite would 430 and the premuim will be 350 ( a nect gen system that's only 100 bucks more than the wii) and the core will be at the same price as the wii.....

Plus Ms isnt really making a profit yet...

I don't get some of you.  You are posting in a gaming forum, so I would assume gaming is one of your favorite hobbies.

But you will shun the best console** on the market over $50? Two $20 bills and a $10?  I would say that doesn't make you much of a gamer. If gaming is really one of your favorite hobbies, you'd find a way to make an extra $50...  like work for 10 hours or something.

**I know the 360 being the best console is opinion, but it does have the best gaming selection and feature set at this point in time.

Who says I even need to buy a 360 in the next 2 years to enjoy its games?

I don't think they will because halo 3 will be coming out, and that will get them the sales they really need. I think they'll lower it in early 08.

Nintendo doesn't need to drop the Wii's price, it will sell out this season regardless.

Most people that have a hobby like to do it often...  not wait two years.  Especially in gaming, where people like to play the most up-to-date games and be part of the initial rush of excitement. If that's not your bag, then so be it.  I was speaking more to the people who want a 360 now, but are unwilling to pay an extra $50 for it.  I would say the same thing to someone who wanted a Wii, but was waiting for the price to drop to $225.  Or the PS3 to $530.  IF it is your favorite hobby...  you make it happen, despite a bit of pocket change.

$50 probably wont seem like that much to consumers. hopefully they go for $100 drop. Also, if they hang on to the core they can then advertise the 360 as starting from $199.99, which is pretty much the place you want to aim for to get the mainstream onboard.

Maybe if you actually knew what my next-gen plan was...

Right now the PS3 is not doing so well. I can find a discounted one very easily -- online retailers are cutting the price by quite a significant amount these days. I would rather get a cheaper PS3 this year while it's not doing so well than next year when sales will likely pick up and the price remains high.

The situation would not be the same if the 360 was made cheaper though. I would not hesitate to buy one if Microsoft reduced the price by about $50-100 (roughly the discount I can get on a PS3 right now). I understand fully that the 360 is better, but I really do want a PS3 as well. And i'm sure as hell not going to pay full price for both consoles when I can get one or the other reduced by about $75 if I wait.

Call me cheapskate if you must, but that's just how I roll.

As a devision, its still not doing so unfortunately. It sucks but it can have as many good games as it wants by the Wii will crush is even if Nintendo completely stop supporting it with software. As for the PS3, by the time of a price drop, itll be a lost cause.

It's all cool.  I just remember back when money was a little tight for me, I used to find a way to make things happen for my favorite hobbies.  Gaming has always been one of my favs.  Try skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, rock climbing, camping, etc.  Now those are expensive hobbies.  Skiing cost over $50 a day...  and you still need to buy all the equipment.
