Rumors and speculations about the next-gen Xbox have been firing up lately. Gamers are becoming more confident that it will be announced soon even if it means that Microsoft and Sony have just been pressuring each other.One of the latest reports says that the console, which has been dubbed by many as Xbox 720, may be featuring a strong tablet component.Gamespot tries to capture the essence of the year 2012 with a feature that touched on the next-gen console. Here are some bits from the writeup:

"There are strong signs suggesting that, like with Nintendo's Wii U, a tablet component figures heavily into the new design. That saucy Windows 8 Metro interface (now also seen on the Xbox Dashboard) just begs to be touched".It went on to say that there has been a lot of speculation regarding what form the next-gen console will take. Gamespot claims that this has been happening for months. There are suggestions that the new platform will have a core similar to that of a tablet PC. This means that the console will be wirelessly connected to a base station. The base station will be plugged into a television set.This means that a premium Xbox Next setup "could feasibly include a base station, a tablet, a conventional controller of some kind, and the recently discussed high-def evolution of the Kinect."

The whole thing sounds interesting and also exciting but at the moment it is still a rumor. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is believed to be making its first official announcement about the next-gen console at the Consumer Electronics Show through his key note address.There have also been rumors from back in November that Microsoft is going for a two SKU strategy for the 720. The system is believed to be released at a very low price, as can be allowed. Higher end models will be released for more hardcore fans.

I wonder if the 720 will be the first console the have different hardware specs for the different SKUs. AKA the $250 model has inferior hardware than the $400 model, yet the games released for the system will automatically scale the graphics according to the sky you have? That would be innovative

There's a difference between selling at a minor loss (Nintendo and the GCN which was rectified within an incredibly short period of time) and what Sony (PS2 initially,PS3 for most of this gen and PS1 as well although i can't find the link for the PS1 being sold at a loss) and Microsoft did/do.

Pretty sure all of Nintendo's consoles were sold at a profit. Wouldn't be surprised if only MS and Sony sold at a loss since they have many other divisions.killab2oo5

This sounds like pure speculation. But I would love to see what xbots think of tablet controllers when MS do it because Wii U is a flop big time amirite xbots :P

If this turns out to be true, Sony will basically have to have one too if they want to have multiplats on the PS4 with tablet controllers being the new standard.

Well, change the "report" to "wild fake rumor"

What happened to the power-obsessed Microsoft we all knew once? I'd expect nothing less than a GTX 580 level, multi-core, 8 gigs of RAM monster of a console from them, not some cheap Wii clone.

Next gen consoles are going to have so much crap sticking out of them... I'm a little worried :P

This makes sense because I am pretty sure Microsoft is going digital only with the 720 andwill also be avaliable on PC and Tablets it will be set up like Steam, and it will also come in a console box for the living rooms (Yes Hermits.....I know you hook up you're god damn PC's on the TV). It is basically gonna be like Onlive except dowlnloadable games and not streaming games.

I just hope they let you trade in a purchase for something new....That would be cool if Microsoft found ways to do that....or at least let you rent the games on the service like Onlive.

I am not trying to show support for Onlive here BTW. Onlive had great ideas that are worth stealing, but the streaming componant sucks.

Some people should really inform themselves instead of posting this crap. I laughed though.

This is bad if true :( worst nightware for any lem fans who just hate the Wii U because of the tablet. Doubt any of it is true though, just leave Nintendo do the tablet, I prefer Xbox/PS to stick to high horsepower systems with traditional controllers.

These rumours are reaching peak stupidity. MS is trying to keep the console's price as low as possible (to the point they're supposedly considering a less-powerful, stripped down "Core" SKU)... so they're going to launch the console with an expensive as f*ck Wii U type controller and an updated Kinect (that'll definitely be bundled with the console itself)?

The "tablet-like component" is almost definitely the Xbox Companion app that's already available for WP7 (and will obviously be ported to Win 8). This ain't rocket surgery, games "journalists".

The best case scenario for a launch Windows 8 tablet is netbook-level performance. Not sure what's so clear about a console that'll struggle to run Half Life 2 at 720p.
