Can't believe that it's been 20 years since Resident Evil 4 came out. I didn't play the original Gamecube version since I never owned that console but I played the Playstation 2 version instead.

20 years later I still have a good time playing it. The remake is also great as well.

It's a game I will never forget. I've been busy with other games, so I haven't played the remake yet, but I hear it's even better.

Got it for GC on launch day, played the shit out of it. I think I've played through it around 25-30 times, and I 100%ed the mercenaries mode. Played through the remake a few times as well.

Man time sure flies. Played the GameCube original, the PS2 version, the Wii version, and the Xbox One version. Fantastic game.

I got this game release day. It was pretty wild that a retailer had a day one sale of $10 off so it was a great time to get it. I was excited for it but it blew way past expectations. I wouldn't stop talking about it at school.

A month later a friend came up to me "I finally tried Resident Evil 4. I can see why you wouldn't shut the f*** up about it. It's the best game I've ever played"

Also there is an incredibly important lesson about game controls here that we forget with things like the remake. Sure the remake is fine and worth playing on it's own terms, but the original is better cause the "bad" controls are actually a part of the game design. People are far too conservative now that completely homogeneous 3rd person two stick controls are standard. Other action games can exist with fundementally different aspects of interaction when we free our mind. Makes me think about how much better Metal Gear Solid 2 is than Metal Gear solid V because one is a unique stealth action game and the other just feels like every other 3rd person shooter we get 100 of per year. I wish we could relearn this as a species.

Congratulations, you've beaten 98% of the games enemies and made it's attempts at resource management redundant.

Also here's a few terrible QTE's.

OHHHHH ROCK!

What a landmark game. it shows developers can innovate without forgetting what the series is about.

I agree that the QTEs are the only thing that aged poorly in the game. I'm glad that the remake used way less of them.

I remember reading a post in GameFaqs back then about how shooting the lake will get the monster to come out and kill you so I tried it out and see if that was true and yeah it was definitely a jump scare that I will never forget 😯

Still the best game ever. I've owned it on GameCube, PS2, Wii, Xbox 360, PS4, PC and Switch. Just one of those games I'll always be glad to re-buy and I never get tired of replaying it.

The GCN had the two discs? Buying it at Circuit City brings back memories. For whatever reason I didn't play much of it until it was released this past generation.

Skipped it when it was on the Game Uber because I didn't care for the archaic controls. It was just too illogical. When I did play it and the remake, it was weird that the original was easier because the enemies were made super dumb because of the controls couple with knife being very powerful.

I so happen to have the Gamecube version right next to me and yeah: it does have two discs. I totally forgot about that.

Good old days of gaming when disc space was still an issue, and now we have 175+ GB games xD

Happy birthday Resi 4. Good game, but Resi 1, 2 and Code Veronica are still my favorite games.

I remember loving the new control scheme on the Wii version. Thought for sure a bunch of other games would copy it, and it would be a new begining for motion controls. Alas, it was not meant to be. Of all the times for the games industry to decide not to rip off another's success...

Remake is better. removal of all QTEs.

Agreed, no one likes QTE's and I'm surprised they blew up so big in the early 2000's.

The remake did more than that though. Inverted all the maps to make the game both familiar and throw fans off. The knife was completely rebalanced as a parrying/ survival tool. Ammo and health management was (while still too plentiful) more balanced to make players feel uncomfortable with using resources.

The remake does have its issues, the side objectives are downright awful and feel like filler (a carried over trend from Village). Ada's role in the game feels downplayed and honestly makes her look incompetent despite in OG Resi4 Ada is cool as ****. & the general pacing of the village section is much worse than the original game, it actually pains me how much they scuffed over the village section. Heck you can't even shoot the bell for the easter-eggs like in the original. A lot of these fun little details are cut in the remake.

As such the remake isn't 'better' like say the Dead Space remake which just is straight-up better, it's just more 'acceptable' to play for zoomers who hate old games; in conclusion it's the only way they'll know of the masterpiece that is Resi4 so it's a win-win for everyone.

Wow, Gamecube cases in PAL suck ass. Such small discs in such a small case and they STILL use flippers.

NA cases are worse, honestly. Especially the two disc ones where that center button doesn't move. Same BS with my Ghost in the Shell, Mandalorian, Obi-Wan, and Marvel Blu-Ray steelbooks.

I hate steelbooks, but agree about the decline of movie cases. I always am careful when I open cases now in case the disc is not in its flimsy holder. Cheaper, thinner plastic in the whole case as well.

I import a lot of movies. UK cases have wider spines, which I dislike. Space is precious.

I mean, I'm not too wild about steelbooks, but I bought those because those were the only option to me, thanks to Disney and whoever has the Ghost in the Shell (anime, not that god-awful ScarJo movie) license for the US for the "Mondo" release. At least GITS I got for under $10 (US). As I did another Steelbook, the Power Rangers 2017 movie.

I have some UK imports of movies as well (I don't order movies off import sites, but I did find some Hong Kong Video CDs at a thrift store once and bought those) from when I lived in England, and comparing the spines to at least one of my US DVDs (Power Rangers RPM in this case), I don't see a difference in width?

@nintendoboy16: two discs stacked on top of eachother? The worst.

I own several Ubisoft collections (POP, Splinter cell) and it's three discs stacked on top of eachother.

That too. I remember seeing that on some 360 releases, like RDR GOTY.

I still remember playing this game like it was yesterday. I’m glad it got the recognition it deserved with the remaster.

It's a lazy way to make something feel cinematic.

Everything has regressed from Half-life.

@uninspiredcup: Eh, Half Life popularized the locking areas for progression while NPCs dump narrative... that's pretty annoying, not as bad as QTEs but wouldn't state I like either.

Naughty Dog stated Half Life was the inspiration for 'methods of storytelling'; and they took it a step further with slow walking sections; which have sadly now become the norm in games with larger budgets. Which yeah, traces back to Half Life.

The whole you are not in a cutscene but you can't progress is one of the most annoying things in gaming imo. I'd take the cutscene, at least then I know it's time to grab a fresh drink.

I wonder what game took QTEs too far that publishers all silently agreed to stop using them? Resident Evil 6 seems to be the turning point, at least for Capcom.

We need a game like Resi6 which will take progression-narrative-locks too far so the pacing nightmare ceases.

People being bad at Beathoven, doesn't mean Beathoven is bad.

It's moot argument and just proves how good Halflife is if supposidly one of the best developer around today does a fucking terrible job at it.

Regressed.

@uninspiredcup: You're not wrong, Valve knew how to have a pacing balance with narrative progression locks. While games such as The Last of Us: Part 2, Uncharted 3, God of War IV, Ragnarok are slow walking narrative nightmares.

Still hate it though, and can't wait for the gimmick to die. Let games be games.
