Resident Evil 7 Cloud Version is coming to Switch, Capcom has announced.

As the name implies, Resident Evil 7 will not be launching on Nintendo’s console in the traditional sense. Everything runs through the cloud, so you won’t actually be purchasing the full game that can be played offline. You’ll need a stable internet connection while accessing the title.

Players will nonetheless be able to play Resident Evil 7 in its entirety on Switch. This includes the Banned Footage Volume 1 and 2, End of Zoe, and Not a Hero DLC.

Resident Evil 7 can be played for up to 15 minutes on Switch for free. After that, you’ll need to purchase a 2,000 yen ticket, which lasts 180 days.

Here’s the first trailer for Resident Evil 7 Cloud Version:

Resident Evil 7 Cloud Version will be out in Japan on May 24. A western announcement may follow in the coming days.

Remember Res Evil 2 was ported to Nintendo 64 on a 512 megabit (64 MB) cartridge.

What the-.... Bizarre. I guess the downgrade required for a port to happen wasn't worth it (That or they didn't want to develop it).

So you have to be dependant on your cell phone data when you have no Wi-Fi access. Doesn't sound very portable but I wonder if they are experimenting to save costs on physical copies and sharing that big % chunk of digital sales with Nintendo?

@christcc9: It seems to me that the most obvious flaw is that one benefit of the Nintendo Switch is its hybrid nature. To stream a game from the cloud, you would need a persistent and fast internet connection, which will not always be available when playing on the go like, for example, on the bus.

Not surprised - I think this is the future. I'd suggested that this would be how ps and Xbox would go eventually a while back. Both companies have invested heavily in the games streaming infrastructure

Same. Nothing about its graphics screamed "next gen" or "impossible on switch." Heck, I think most anything coming out now could be ported to Switch with minimal loss.

@vfighter: you'll see. I'm not saying I WANT it (I don't) and I'm not saying PS5. I'm talking, like, PS7. I strongly believe MS and Sony will eventually adopt a Switch-like model, in which the hardware itself is relatively cheap and versatile, still offers a traditional plug-in gaming experience, but can offer the "premium" experience gamers demand as well via their streaming/cloud-based processing infrastructure.

If you think I'm nuts, then follow the money. MS in particular is already heavily emphasizing cloud-based processing and games as a service, and both companies have been dumping money into cloud computing and acquiring streaming infrastructure.

Nvidia has invested in this as well.

They're coming for us

Look at that... more 3rd party, current gen support on the Switch.

3rd parties making bank on Nintendo.

It is not the future. They can invest all they want in streaming infrastructure, but until the average household has access to reliable high speed internet, it's not worth making it their main delivery system.

@JustPlainLucas: Except that - setting aside the fact that internet will continue to improve - a solution like the Switch gets around that. I know people on here like to shit all over the Switch, but it's perfectly functional as a local processing "traditional" console, AND it's functional as a portable. If you pay for an optional cloud-based computing solution (being piloted here with RE7) it can punch above its weight.

Now more than triple its processing power over the next 15 years and call it a PS7. Given that we are reaching diminishing returns on visual fidelity, that monster could be far weaker than a "traditional" console would be at that time and STILL deliver extremely good graphics. Any need for more power could be a premium option (streaming and/or cloud-based assist) that someone who demands MOAR can buy. And for the schlubbs (like me) who will likely still have shit internet at that time we wouldn't lose out. It would still be a great gaming device.

This is a bit of a bizarre move. It makes sense for Japan, due to a prevalence of wireless networks, but in places like NA? Jeez. Good luck. Hopefully they'll do a traditional port for worldwide audiences.

Do you have a percentage of the number of people having unreliable high speed?

Here's an interesting article (state with lowest avg internet speed = Idaho @ 12Mbps - how many of the people without broadband are modern console gamers, and would a hybrid solution work for them? What will these stats be in the "PS7 era"?). I'm sure there's more digging out there to be done on this

I don't have any numbers, but I'll say this. Until that number reaches 100 percent, then it isn't a viable business option to make streaming only consoles. If you aren't able to reach everyone that wants to play your games, you're losing out on money. Even people with fast reliable speed might have data caps imposed by their plans, or even their government meaning that streaming games might not be something they use their Internet to do. I'm sure we're going to see more streaming services, but I'd be highly surprised to see any main gaming platform go streaming only.

That's nonsense.

  • 480p HD: 1,5 Mbps
  • 720p HD: 3 Mbps
  • 1080p HD: 6 Mbps
  • 4K Ultra HD: 13 Mbps

Sorry but if your country doesn't allow you to stream games because you don't have a stable connection that could handle 720p or even 480p. It's hardly anybody fault other then the 3rd world country you live in.

Why not stop making mobiles because some africa country's can't have reception because of no infrastructure. Makes sense right.

The only issue that arises is input lag, but lets be honest. People on consoles will notice this in any way? they already are handicapped with massive amount of input lag to start with.

I have 1Gbps where I live and I will not be supporting a streaming only future. It's bullshit and from my experience with PS Now, Onlive, and Nvidia's Geforce Now a totally inferior way of playing games. The minor input lag you get kills the experience for me. Nothing beats having the hardware in front of you. There will never be internet fast enough to completely eliminate input lag because the lag is caused by Physics, light simply can't travel fast enough to totally eliminate input lag over long distances.

You're making an inference that just because it's available, it's available to everyone, that everyone's service is as equal to everyone else's. That simply isn't the case. Where I'm at, Comcast is pretty crap and I live in Denver, a freaking state capital. I can stream Netflix fine most of the time, but in my neighborhood, usage goes up in the evenings and there are times where Netflix gets bogged down and the picture goes a bit grainy, even if it's just for a few seconds. There are also instances where the net just completely goes out. Ever heard of outages? Peoples' worries of outages were one of the main reasons we all boycotted Xbox One back in 2013 until MS fixed that stupid always-online feature. No one wants a gaming machine that could be a brick for a few days because they have no working internet to play with. I don't care if you have the fastest internet on the block. When some dumbass drunk driver takes out the cable box for the entire neighborhood, everyone's speed gets reduced to 0 Mbps.

I'm not saying there aren't enough users worth making streaming services for. I'm just saying that streaming only is prohibitive for certain people and that's why it's a bad business decision to move forward as your only product delivery service.

Yeah, and then there's that, too. I'm not putting up with any kind of input lag for my gaming. If YOU are experiencing lag on 1 Gbps, then what's it going to be like for me when I'm 15 Mbps?

A high end PC gamer would say the same of consoles. Yet there are loads of console users. There is a market for it, and that will showcase more and more the more the tech matures.

Don't get me wrong, there will be a market for it. There will be a market for it like everything out there but I don't see it replacing traditional hardware gaming because it's quite inferior. It's a nice alternative especially if you're gaming on the go when quality of the gaming isn't as important to you as being able to game in general.

Yea it will be atrocious for you depending on your connection. I wouldn't even bother if I had 15Mbps internet.
