https://www.pcmag.com/news/25-years-ago-resident-evil-gave-horror-a-new-name

Growing up, RE games always intimidated me lol. I remember being afraid to play RE 2. I somehow managed to do one campaign. Never played 3. But first big RE experience was Resident Evil Remake on GameCube. It's one of my favorite games ever. Originally I didn't beat it, but when I got to college, I decided I was going to do it. I beat it at least 5 times, going after all the endings. Resident Evil 4 for GameCube was also another memorable experience. RE games tend to make me doubt myself, but I end up getting through them lol. But being chased by the chainsaw guy the first time was crazy. And then the game got very action-gamey and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I look forward to the Remake!

As for other Resident Evil games, I played 5. It was ok, actually good, but not quite on the same level as 4. Never played RE 6, heard it wasn't very good. And it didn't look good lol. RE 7 was cool, except for the bland monster blobs. But still a nice return to form. Played Resident Evil 2 Remake which was fantastic. And also played RE 3 Remake which was meh. Felt incomplete. Other than that, those are all of the RE games I played. No Code Veronica or any other ones not mentioned. But I'm really looking forward to 8! The PS5 exclusive tech demo was cool.

How about you, SW? What are your favorite RE games and memories?

Favorite memory is easily walking down the hallway and having the dogs jump through the windows.

Ha, yeah those damn jump scares are ingrained in my memory.

Favorites would be REmake, REmake 2, and RE4.

I'm always partial to the OG games, but the remakes were a solid step-up except for 3 (which was still decent).

Absolutely love the Resident Evil franchise. I remember going down to my local game store and picking up Resident Evil when it first came out. It was in the tall black plastic case on the PS1 before they switched over to the CD jewel cases. Liked the OG cases better. I remember getting jump scared by the dog smashing though the window. 😅

Anyway my favourites in no particular order are:

- Resident Evil Remake

- Resident Evil 2 OG

- Resident Evil 2 Remake

- Resident Evil 4

I created a shadowbox just a couple months ago for the series. My complete copy of Director's Cut is displayed with it. I even installed a push button speaker that cycles through sounds and ambient music from the game.

My favorite memory is probably my jaw dropping when they first showed a trailer for Remake in the Gamecube. It single handedly sold me the system. I've really enjoyed the numbered entries excluding 7. Most the side games are trash but I loved the Outbreak games. Not sure if I'll continue with the series as survival horror isn't really my thing anymore.

First PS1 game, and one of the first 3D games I ever played was Resident Evil Director's Cut on PS1. My favorite ones are all the ones with tank controls with RE3 being my top.

To be honest none. I don't dislike them but I don't love them either. This kind of zombie survival horror genre just doesn't trigger any emotional response in me. Stuff like Evil Within at least builds a great atmosphere and fucks with you in clever ways. It's just a series that never clicked with me.

@SolidGame_basic: So you never played the best RE game in Code Veronica. You've never experienced the best then, not surprising as you're used to not experiencing the best as you "play" on PS.

Code Veronica felt like the last true RE game and by far the best game in the series.

Fixed camera angles, the black screen with the door loading, facing the Tyrant with only the handgun. I wonder if there is a way to do fixed camera in the current era? Probably not.

@SolidGame_basic: this thread is made like every couple of months, but I'll bite. My fave re game is re4, it was actually my first re game that I played and beat. I have played and beat it over 20 times on various consoles and even the PC, now on my Xbox series x. I've maxed out all my weapons, and bought the infinite rocket launcher a few times. I've played re4 than any other game. There's no game I've replayed as much as re4. Re4 is one of the greatest games in history. The guy who made it needs a standing ovation. When re5 came out, I paid full price for it thinking it would be amazing as re4, and while it wasn't bad, it was a disappointment compared to re4. The best part of re5 is Chris punching the sht out of zombies...its more satisfying than re4. I can't wait for re4 to get the remake it deserves in full 4k plus all the latest graphics features.

The funny thing is, I'm actually playing it now on my Xbox series x, I just cleared the game, and now I'm going through it again in cheat mode.

I looked at the leader boards and some dude did a speed run in 1hr 27 minutes....how the hell is that even possible??

My introduction to the franchise was actually RE1 on the Sega Saturn. It was my first experience with a horror game.

REmake and RE4 blew me away. RE4 ended up being one of my all-time favorite games of all time.

I played a little bit of RE2 remake and so far it's great.

Resident Evil 2 (2019) and Resident 4 are my favorite. Resident Evil 5 is close for the multiplayer and replay-value. My favorite memories are when you enter the police station in RE2 and hearing that creepy music. And dealing with the chainsaw guy for the first time in the village in RE4.

I remember renting RE on the ps1 and hating it, it didn't come with the instruction book and I gave up on it because I couldn't instantly figure out the control scheme. Years later I bought the director's cut cheap and bam, I feel in love with the franchise from there. I loved the cheesey FMV intro, the setting, the atmosphere, everything.

My favorite RE games are probably REmake (gamecube, ps4), RE (ps1), RE2 (ps1), Code Veronica (Dreamcast), and RE4 (gamecube).

I have a good memory of playing RE3 with my brother when I was a kid. My brother was so angry that he couldn't beat RE3, and a few days later he decided to order an Action Replay for the PlayStation via mail order. Thanks to that magical instrument, we were able to turn RE3 into a zombie shooter with unlimited bullets and kill all the zombies. It was a lot of fun. Ten years later, Capcom realized our ideal game of the time with Dead Rising.

My favorite memory is playing RE2 when it came out it's the first game ever I remember going to its official website and looking at all screenshots and some weapons you can use. But my favorite RE is easily 4 I just love the gameplay and setting especially the village setting the game was so ahead of it's time.

Deflecting a throwing weapon with your knife still feels amazing.

As a RE fan for decades, the first RE on PS1 will always be the goat that started it all but RE2 was a whole new experience for me and RE4 is kinda where its at if I'm being honest about it. RE7, I'll admit, its totally my fav as of now due to the first-person-view cause it really brings you the true immersion...especially if you play it in VR.

By the way, the first RE movie is actually good, its the later sequels that took a huge nosedive which is the problem. Just go with the first movie and never bother the later sequels.

Playing the original game the night it launched and being scared when the dogs jumped through the window in the hallway. I was surprised they took that out in the remake and switched it to the sound of glass cracking. The game had great atmosphere.

It's crazy that we play it now and because of how primitive the graphics were originally, it's not that scary, but back in the day...

Played RE Directors Cut on PS, was unlike any other game at the time. As amazing as it was, I felt like RE2 was twice as good. Playing it as a kid, I remember hanging out in the gun shop for a little too long because it felt safe from the horrors outside....

Code Veronica was great on DC, REmake and Zero were great on GC, but by the time that RE4 arrived, it felt like nothing I'd ever played before. An absolute masterpiece, it clearly left a mark on gaming and inspires other games to this day.

Where RE4 added some action aspects but maintained it's focus on survival horror, RE5 made the mistake of going all in on action. Decent game, but not at all scary. RE6 was complete trash that needs to be killed with fire.

RE2 remake was mind-blowing, modernizing the original with aspects of RE4's gameplay but maintaining it's laser focus on survival horror. Idk if I've ever been as stressed as I've been running through the RCPD trying to collect the key items I needed with Mr. X breathing down my neck.

I'm actually playing through RE3 remake right now. So far, it's great, and I don't quite understand the hate for it yet. If I had one complaint, it feels like they give you a lot more ammo and encourages you to fight more often. Again, moving more towards action than the survival horror direction I prefer from the RE series.

I've yet to play RE7, but have heard only good things. I'll def play through it before playing RE8, tho I think I'll be too scared to do so in PSVR.

Overall, RE has given me many great gaming memories over the years, and I'm glad that the series has found new life with RE7 and the remakes. Overall, RE4 is my favorite in the series, and I hope Capcom gets it right with the remake.

I forgot to mention RE5, I know a lot don't like it but it easily goes on my favorite list. Your AI companion wasn't a complete moron (I don't ever remember having to save her or worry about her), the gameplay was RE4 with a heavier lean towards action and it was done really well, the graphics were fantastic and it was just plain fun.

The thing that sticks out from the original Resident Evil was the gallery with the crows.

Resident Evil 2, 2 disks, multiple playthroughs.

3 Not much tbh.

4 Cheesing. Very broken game.

5 Great COOP, racism.

6 QTE, cinematic walking, bad PC port. Helenas Harpers.

7 Not much very generic feeling

REV1 - Woah, I can't believe this was a 3DS game, it's so fucking good

REV2 - I don't like this as much as the first game, prefer the tight level design and partner is fucking stupid

Operation Racoon City - I can't run this. Now I can. It's shit. But might as well play through it since I bought it.

Code Veronica - This is 3D

Resident Evil Gaiden - This game is actually a pretty faithful conversion, why do people hate it exactly?

Resident Evil Outbreak 1/2 - This seems like it could be fun, too bad the online is dead and they didn't port it to PC

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles - This is fun, for 15 min

Resident Evil: Dead Aim - Sucks

etc...

I only played the first two. I couldn't take it. I'm just not cut out for that brand of horror. Have considered watching a stream of them recently though. Anyway, first one...those effing dogs jumping through the window. Oh my god. It's still one of my top 5 gaming memories. Terrified me.

Original RE2 when you enter the gun store

RE 1 and the terrible voice acting.

RE2 remake I thought was over rated (Maybe because I beat the original a million times and was already burnt out)

@uninspiredcup: RE5 racism?

RE5 was the most controversial game in the series. There were racism allegations made against the game, due to its African setting. Some of it could come down to cultural differences between Japan and the West.

Either way, RE5 was still a fun co-op shooter. It wasn't survival horror anymore, but was a well-made co-op shooter, despite the stop-and-shoot mechanics.
