Just saw this video from Videogamer.com, about the resolution battle going on between Xbox One and PS4. It's an interesting video, worth a watch.

What does anyone think?

I think I'm in agreement with Matt here, the resolution itself doesn't matter, but it could be indicative of things to come?

Sorry if old.

I do prefer a crisper image, but some games can get away with a lower resolution, there is also a lot of tricks that devs can put in place for the X1 versions.

720 COD is pathetic, same as 360/PS3 lol. Clearly even the X1 can run COD weak graphics at higher res, dumb devs making the same noob games. xD

I agree with everything he says on the video. Hold onto your money and don't buy an Xbox one.

Thank you Matt Lees.

did he really just say MS have always had the better 1st party games? because he making sense until then...

I think the reason a lot of people are pissed is the idea that they have to spend a lot more money on a system that is less powerful. Its a damning premonition of things to come if multiplats are this different at launch. the question now is, how much money will they toss at the problem?

It isn't just about resolution. What it really boils down to is that if one system can output a certain game in 1080p and the other can only do it in 720p then imagine what the former console could do in 720p. If PS4 can output COD:Ghosts at double the resolution that Xbox One can then theoretically it should also be able to do twice as much with a 720p game as what Xbox One can.

Xbox does have better first party games. Halo 3 exclusive to the 360 has sold over 15 million copies. The best PS exclusive is is gran Turismo With just over 10million. Infact Microsoft owns 4 of the top 6 best selling exclusive titles of the current gen.

If the tiny differences in multiplats mattered last gen (according to Lems), then resolution superiority on the PS4 sure as hell matters this gen

I prefer the maximum resolution allowed at all times, then you factor in $100 cheaper? No wonder PS4 is sold out everywhere and posed to be a great system this gen.

if one game was at 720p (or lower) and little to no AA but matched the visual fidelity of a pre-rendered pic http://i.imgur.com/qL8iUHT.jpg

and another game at some ludicrous resolution and AA up the ass, but it only looked comparable to something like shadow fall http://i.imgur.com/6JPWnby.jpg

which would you choose as the better looking game

a crisper image does matter, but if the game, it's engine, effects lighting etc.. look like shit, 1080p means nothing.

for me it boils down to what the engine can do

Just in case you ever feel like using your brain, you should realize that for any game that would be so demanding that it needed to be 720p on PS4, then on Xbox one that game will need to be Sub HD, or might not even run at all.

it's not just resolution. It's better AA. More detailed particle effects. To it's the AA that lets me tell instantly the difference between console and PC. Jaggies are an eyesore and the PS4 will have less than the Xbone.

I already know that it matters to me. At least if it's 720p vs 1080p. I can definitely tell the difference between those on my TV, and I prefer 1080p for obvious reasons.
Long term it's indicative of the performance gap that will always exist between the PS4 and XO. Whether it will widen, tighten or stay the same remains to be seen.
That said, I'll probably continue getting multiplats on PC. So for me it'd be more about exclusives than technical performance. Otherwise the PS4 would've been the new 360, as it surely will be for lots of others.

It matters for sure. To say it does not is about as delusional as saying there's no difference between 30fps and 60fps.

1080p is better than 720p. There's no argument about it. It's better. End of story. I'm not entirely sure why so much ink is being devoted to acting like it isn't.

That's not really a new take on it, that's the whole point of the debate. If the Xbox One can't do 1080p now, how the hell is going to do 1080p when people start wanting better looking assets?

The PS4 cant do 1080p every game you would have to buy a PC for that.

Microsoft are banking on the overall experience and services as well as games. The added extra Kinect and dedicated servers will bring and all the other features or resolution is the decision. But if u going just for resolution why not get a PC.

People have been arguing about graphics since the 80's. It's not a new development.

Thinking better performance is good = not liking fun, confirmed.

I know Matt Lees, he was an employee of Official Xbox Magazine.

It explains his association with 1st party 360 being better than PS3 based on how much time he spent with exclusives and wrote about them. He wasn't clear on what his opinion was based on, but perhaps sales, but that's not a way to measure quality of a game. Who can say what he used for measurements for that statement, we do know he played a shitload of 360 during his time with OXM. It's all good.

It's not that I completely disagree or whatever. He now works at Videogamer.com, eh? He could have made this video 4 years ago because this is an old take, not new as far as I'm concerned. It's not a bad watch though.

Either way, this is most definitely NOT a new take on Resolution. We've heard this before for YEARS, not to mention yours truly made very similar sentiments in SW many times in 2005-2010. There is more to power than resolution, but it seems the typical joes relegate the power conversation to simple "resolution" when the actual conversation has been about power, performance, resolution, textures, particles, et cetera.

He's right, it's more than just COD : Ghosts, it's about future proofing tech. Let's be honest too, COD : Ghosts is a lazy port so it's all very peculiar. They are using an old engine, pulling a "Gun" with the Xbone and PS4 versions. That is also why I'm surprised COD : Ghosts isn't running 1080p on both machines, I figured of all games, that lazy designed for PS360 game would be an easy one to hit 60fps/1080p on the new hardware. Peculiar.

Both machines, not just one, will improve over time of course. I read somewhere people suggesting we'll see improvements for Xbox One. Of course we will, we'll see improvements for both over time.

Its always nice to have the best possible, if the xbone had 2 titans overclocked with an i7 over clocked and 16gb of DDR4 ram which isn't even out yet and a 1TB SSD drive then that would be awesome.

That isn't the case, so I look at what else it offers; the games, online service, functionality and all round quality. I think the Xbone offers enough at launch for me to pick one up over the PS4. Will likely get PS4 3-4 or so years down the line when the Naughty Gods let loose.

Personally, I don't care. Got my PC if I want 'teh graphics'.

However, I am happy knowing that I don't care as much about graphics as consolites do. Jeez, some of the comments make it seem like they don't even enjoy gaming. They'd much rather count pixels, and argue online than enjoy games.

Interesting. I thought they were identical resolutions?

I find it amusing that CoD 3 has a higher reoslution than any other console CoD.

And now the Xbox trolls and cows run around the forms saying resolution doesn't matter. Yet if it was the other way round where X1 had 1080 and PS4 had 720, we would see the Xbox trolls saying how powerful and epic the X1 is over the PS4 because PS4 has 720 and the X1 has 1080. It's pure logic at the end of the day that console fans would stand down and defend the console they love even if it had it's faults.

Excellent point and is something i argue as well.

If ever the day come where developers push the PS4 to so 720p it will do 720p with much better graphics than the xbox one,i dare say Ultra 720p PS4 vs med low 720p on xbox one.

Don't worry DirectX is better apparently... And Microsoft are in the software business and are better are creating graphics api layers and have the best developers. And developers will be able to optimize a game for an X86 based system because they have not been around all that long, not to mention the AMD HD7770 has only been around since February 2012 so devs will obviously have not mastered those pieces of hardware yet. And both these pieces of hardware are nothing like the PS4... or even PCs.

Don't kid yourselves, it will be down to whether devs wants to spend the most amount of time (money) to get games to run better. There is no secret switch Microsoft and flick that suddenly make the console more powerful (don't believe the hype on cloud services).

I seriously thought Microsoft would have paid off the FPS devs at the very least to bring down the PS4 version to the same level as the 'One.

It's the fact that these new consoles are designed to be in line with pc's architecture in mind, this being said all games are made on pc's this in turn should allow developers easier access to make games at a high level, the worrying thing is xbox one's call of duty can only run at 720p, the engine there using is the same as ps3/360, that guy is right it's worrying that they can't push it when it's ment to be easier to program for, we can say that they will find out ways of making it work, but the whole point Sony put a cross was that they asked dev's what they wanted and needed and they provided. it's a worrying time.

as much as i love ps4 and i'm getting one at launch, i still want xbox one to thrive so i can buy one once the slim version comes out, but i believe they are riding on the whole cloud base gaming

what we also have to think is, cloud base gaming is all about internet access, for me this isn't a problem but the fact is i am a massive fan of off-line gaming and i want a system which out of the box gives me the best performance not something i have to hope comes true.
