https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2024/06/ps5-exclusive-rise-of-the-ronin-is-koei-tecmos-best-selling-game

Rise of the Ronin attracted largely muted reviews at launch, but like so many games that are overlooked by critics, it’s garnered a cult following. Many now believe this release is underrated – especially after public opinion has soured on the title that overshadowed it, Dragon’s Dogma 2. The good news for creator Koei Tecmo is that it is its best-selling title to date.

That’s according to director Fumihiko Yasuda, who stopped short of sharing any specific sales numbers with Japanese publication Denfaminico Gamer. Considering the game only launched in March on a single platform, that’s actually an impressive result, and Koei Tecmo will feel positive about the future, which is likely to include a PC port and discounts.

Nice, I have the game on my backlog, but currently busy with Paper Mario and Like a Dragon. But from what I played, it seemed interesting. Thoughts, SW? Do we have a hidden gem on our hands here? Looks like fans enjoyed it more than the critics (8.7 user score on metacritic).

The fact that this outsold nioh and nioh 2 is a bit sad to me. Those are much superior games. Oh well, I'm glad people enjoy it.

Also, I see Dragon's Dogma 2 mentioned in the article. That game is a sad shell of what could have been an awesome sequel. So disappointing. Rise even with its problems is probably a better game.

Ha! A game with Switch visuals sold that well? Wenzen is gonna shit a brick.

I keep saying, gen 7 graphics hold up. Give us that with higher resolution and better lighting, and y'all could cut dev times back down to 2-3 years.

Really? I find that kind of sad when you got Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden II.

Quite intrigue with this game. I may have to pick this one up in the future but there just too much game to play and less time to do it. If this landed on pc il give it a try.

@judaspete: No doubt. Spend way less on graphics, and put that into mechanics.

Meh...waaay too many samurai games coming out. You're better off just playing Ghost of Tsushima or waiting for one of the other million that are coming out.

Except for the ass creed one.

Yeah it's crazy people are still buying open world games.

I've seen this big "let's go back to linear games" movement.

Guess it's bye bye Nioh, then. People have spoken. Nioh too hard. Dumb it down. Make it open world.

Seeing Koei Tecmo that confident in wording I can assume it outsold Wu Long the multi generation, multiplatform + gamepass title.

So Exclusive >>> sub service?

It's not a bad game and the combat is solid, it's just everything around the combat feels dated.

I think it's a perfect 7 out of 10 game TBH

If this is Koei Tecmo's best selling game, then that's huge. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, on the Switch, sold over 4 million copies. That means it sold over 4 million as well. Koei Tecmo has been growing itself and doing well.

Most people don't care about graphics as much as h@rdc0re gamerz think.

I don't believe this BS, there must be something we don't know. Not only was this game overshadowed (even tho DD2 had a really rocky launch as well), but nobody even talked about the damn game, and i am not just referring to SW here. The only way this is true is if all their other games didn't sell more than 1.5M, which can't be the case. If he isn't BS'ing around, why isn't he telling us the number of sales? I remember when Nioh was released, the game was very popular, and was in the convo of many for months after launch. It end up selling well from what i recall. If Ronin did well, he would be bragging about those numbers, and he isn't.

Here's my prefessional, high IQ prediction. Even tho a few of their games sold 2-3mil, they aren't making a boatload of money like some other developers. Sony must've paid them enough for exclusivity to cover a couple of millions of sales. Then, they added the profits made on Ronin, which i don't expect to be anything over 1.5M sales, and the total sum of $ made from sales and Sony deal has exceed the profits from their previous titles. That is how i believe he is BS'ing everyone, and the reason why he isn't giving us the amount of copies sold.

And as always, the "graphics don't matter" sheep police LuxuryHeart believes everything he says because it aligns with her agenda. How baffoonish.

I've always enjoyed Koei Tecmo so hopefully this will help fund additional new IPs.

Rise of the Ronin fell short of targets.

The company's titles are highly rated by those who have played them, but they are not being purchased in the first place. In particular,"Rise of Ronin," which was developed as a 5 million unit title, fell far short of its targets. We interviewed PS5 (PlayStation 5) users, and many of them said that they found it difficult to get into the game because there was too little information about the game.

Koei wants to sell 5m units LTD.

It's either a mistranslation or the analyst is out of their mind to suggest Koei wanted to sell 5m units in *checks notes* 9 days before their financial quarter ended. lol

Hideki Yasuda, an established Japanese analyst, recently wrote about which games fell short of Koei Tecmo's sales expectations:

Koei Tecmo Holdings (Koei Tecmo HD) <3635> reported an increase in sales and a decrease in operating profit for the fiscal year ending March 2024. The company's game business has not been blessed with hit titles since the previous fiscal year, and all of the titles released in the fiscal year ending March 2023, including "Wild Hearts" and "Warlon Fallen Dynasty," "Fate Samurai Remnant" and "Rise of Ronin," which it developed, fell short of their targets. In particular, it was explained that "Fate" was a 2 million unit title (as it covers the entire life cycle, the plan for the fiscal year ending March 2024 is unknown), so it is assumed that it fell far short of its targets.

So my prediction was right, their highest selling bullshit is just that, bullshit. Trying to sell you an illusion of success, just like what MS does with GP🤡

@R4gn4r0k: I agree. Open world games can be excellent, it's just often used as a crutch to pad content more often than not these days.

That and the dumbed down gameplay, specifically the lack of combat spacing and the sekiro-esque parry timing like a rhythm game, are a perfect formula for an easy-to-digest game like Rise.

They usually do. They pretty much always outsell the Xbox version and depending on the genre they outsell the PC as well.

Koei Tecmo's best-selling game was Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which sold 4 million units... That would mean Rise of the Ronin sold over 4 million units in just over 2 months.
