Dark Souls is an action RPG, Diablo 3 is a hack and slash action RPG, TW2 is an action RPG, Skyrim is an action RPG etc. etc. HR is very much a hybrid RPG -and quite frankly more of an RPG in its intricacies then most 'RPGs'.Sagem28
See, that's my point.
They slap that title on everything. Games can no longer be categorised into one genre.
If Deus EX can be RPG of the year, that means Fallout NV could be FPS of the year.
No not exactly, at all, it depends on focus.Genre labelling in general is becoming more difficult these days, and that doesn't help that the RPG genre itself was a derivative of pen and paper origins.
A game like FO:NV has just as much focus on progression, character branching, a cast, exploration and choice on a variety of levels as it does combat, which puts it firmly in what we usually define as 'RPG' despite having first person shooting (we say the same about Vampire Bloodlines and Deus Ex).
Compared to say Halo, which is first and foremost about shooting things and the combat fixed progression, with vehicles sprinkled in. Things get more tricky with games like STALKER (which is predominately a shooter with RPG systems and ethos), Mass Effect (I'd call it an action game with RPG tendencies) and even Half Life 2 (which switches between meta-games, shooting, puzzles and isn't paced like a conventional shooter).
Point is it's all really up for debate, but Deus Ex has far too much breadth, complexity and depth not to note it as a hybrid RPG.
