...so, it has been a mixed year for RPG's, but in my opnion, RPG's were THE games of 2011: with Mass Effect2 on PS3, Dragon Age2, Two Worlds 2, The Witcher2 and Skyrim and Dark Souls yet to come. The question is, which will be the best of the year? So far, the Witcher 2 is definetely my RPG for 2011. I really loved the adultness the game combined with fantasy RPG elements. Not an easy thing to accomplish, and I wonder if Skyrim can live up to the Witcher 2's standards... then there's Dark Souls... or Demon Souls 2 if you like, the game that surprised me so hard last year (I live in Europe) and left all other games half a year in the cupboard... yes, I really look forward to the RPG of 2011...more than any other game released this year.

Xenoblade got a 9.0 and is considered the best RPG on the Wii (last JRPG that got a 9.0 on console was Persona I think).

I'd say it has a decent shot.

I'm guessing it will be between The Witcher 2, Skyrim, Deus Ex and Dark Souls.

This is a great year for RPGs.

I only see two real contenders; Xenoblade and Skyrim.

JRPG vs WRPG...interesting showdown.

For me I expect it'll be Skyrim > Dark Souls > anything else this year in terms of RPG's.

The top two at the moment are The Witcher 2 and Xenoblade. Skyrim and Dark Souls will probably round out the nominees - and from there it's a total coin-toss, really. I *want* The Witcher 2 to win, but websites tend to give awards based on popularity more than anything else, so you never know...

Personally, it's Radiant Historia for me ;)

Xenoblade is supringly good. I was shocked really. However it's normal Japanese flair annoys the hell out of me, so i'll go with Deus Ex, Skyrim etc

Deus Ex felt just as RPG-ish as Mass Effect 2, if not more so.

Radiant Historia is awesome! It's disgusting how unknown that game is. Next to the Witcher 2, it's my favourite game of the year so far. Although like yourself, i've yet to play xenoblade(it just arrived in the mail today!).

Skyrim after mediocre Bethesda lets modders with true talent turn it from an average experience to a fantastic one. Just like they did with Oblivion and Fallout.

How is Deus Ex even an option ? It's a FPS/RPG hybrid.

What's a full-blown RPG these days? It's usually a hybrid. Deus Ex HR does enough to be considered partially RPG. That's good enough for me.

We still have even more on the horizon which is great. Deus Ex is up there, looking forward to Dark Souls and The Witcher 2 deserves a mention.

Dark Souls is an action RPG, Diablo 3 is a hack and slash action RPG, TW2 is an action RPG, Skyrim is an action RPG etc. etc. HR is very much a hybrid RPG -and quite frankly more of an RPG in its intricacies then most 'RPGs'.

True, lots of games have adopted typical RPG elements like leveling.

Games like Xenoblade and FF13 are full-blown RPG's in my eyes.

If Deus EX can be RPG of the year, that means Fallout NV could be FPS of the year.

No not exactly, at all, it depends on focus.

Genre labelling in general is becoming more difficult these days, and that doesn't help that the RPG genre itself was a derivative of pen and paper origins.

A game like FO:NV has just as much focus on progression, character branching, a cast, exploration and choice on a variety of levels as it does combat, which puts it firmly in what we usually define as 'RPG' despite having first person shooting (we say the same about Vampire Bloodlines and Deus Ex).

Compared to say Halo, which is first and foremost about shooting things and the combat fixed progression, with vehicles sprinkled in. Things get more tricky with games like STALKER (which is predominately a shooter with RPG systems and ethos), Mass Effect (I'd call it an action game with RPG tendencies) and even Half Life 2 (which switches between meta-games, shooting, puzzles and isn't paced like a conventional shooter).

Point is it's all really up for debate, but Deus Ex has far too much breadth, complexity and depth not to note it as a hybrid RPG.

Deus Ex is very much like the first. You can play the game as you please; you're given a wealth of choice, you can progress at a pace suitable to you, can go off the beaten track, and while progression is fundamentally linear, it allows player choice in plot progression. I'd call it more of an RPG in its tendencies then Mass Effect honestly; which is a game that sticks very much to delivering a particular experience then a wealth of choice (the biggest there being party member interaction).

Good point.

I never said Deus Ex isn't a hybrid RPG though. It's just that so many games can be considered a hybrid, it gets hard to define a games genre...at least for me :).

At the end of the day I don't really care what people call games, it was just an observation I made.

True true, it is hard, alas as more and more genre blending happens it gets more and more trickier! Even a game like Dishonored, it really doesn't fit into a single genre category properly.
