I have been able to pick up an older game for the PC, Starcraft, and I am enjoying it very much. I owned it before but I lost the game. I also own LOTR:BFME II for the X360 and although they are similar, I prefer the controls on the console. Mouse and keyboard does have it's advantages, but I think the controller on X360 does me more justice and it's easier for me to make units and move around the map. The only thing I don't like on the console is the fact that you can't select your units and click on the legend to send them to a certain area on the map. I think that's about the only missing element on console RTS's.

I know many PC enthusiasts would like to put me on a stake and burn me to hell for making such a claim, but it's what I feel comfortable with. I also don't know by how much RTS's have evolved on the PC, as far as controls are concerned, since I don't have a graphics accelerator and I'm playing on a laptop. I can only imagine what it's like to play on the PC these days, but the consoles do me justice and I enjoy it on my big screen as well.

While I think that PCs are more suitable for RTS games I do acknowledge your points. I can't wait for Halo Wars myself. Still, you have imposed on one of PC gamers favorite genres, the can of worms has been officially opened. I hope you're ready.:D

Pikmin. :P I prefer little plant people killing bulborbs and other creatures, and then when they die it's hilarious, not to mention the Pikmin themselves are just adorable. :P

Like FPS games, RTS games are better on the PC for one reason: the mouse.

If there wasn't this game called Supreme Commander comming out in 5 or so days I'd say ok the controller might work, but now that I see you can queue orders like mad and manipulate trajectories and waypoints on the fly in a nick of a second, I'd say the mouse is the clear winner here.

On a side note, most RTS games use the whole keyboard. I don't see myself playing on a controler and not have a key to fast select units or my buildings. Then you can make groups of units with keyboard buttons, it may be possible on the controller, but certainly not as fast.

You can use virtualy any button on your keyboard for some special actions. For example selecting the nuke silo, create a nuke and lunch it. Done with 3 keyboard strokes. While it would take longer to do it with a mouse, I don't imagine how long it would take me with a controller, especially since all buildings can be bound to different keys. So it's really more of a keyboard play as a mouse action, at least for the base & unit micro manageing.

I'd have to say that if anything a keyboard/mouse combo is essential for RTS games, more as for any FPS game.

EDIT: All games work one the console with the controller, it's just the speed of the imput that is different. I've been tooling with PCs before the consoles, so I'm a PC gamer, thus I like the things to be done the PC way, and dislike the controller for such games for examlple.
But if games are done correctly they can work out everywhere. And people will enjoy them, and that's the most important thing.

Your opinion has been dubly noted. Now go plug in that 360 controller to your PC and you'll get the exact same experience. I was playing CIV, one of the most complicated RTS franchises, with an analog stick an the X button. -_-

I bet it would wokr, but that would be like switching from a Ferarri to a Fiat in my case. Not that I bash the consoles, I just don't like having to use 3 buttons while I have more then 101 at my disposal :).

PC got the only AAA racing game last year. I dont think any PC gamer is so presumptious to claim that racing is dead on consoles. So why the hell do console gamers think because of a handful of mediocre titles that RTS will be dominant on a console? You guys said the same thing about FPS games on the first Xbox and Halo 2 is only average in the amount of users compared to PC online FPS games.

Just to think that one can play M2TW on a controller is kinda sad...
The amount of strategising the camera angles  and the 25 buttons that are used on teh keyboard make this task pretty much impossible...the only part it can work is the SP turnbased campaignmap but then you lose the battles which are smth like 70% of the game....

Since you have a console and only played starcraft your gonna think your some RTS genius just cause you like LOTR BFME more than starcraft. LOTR was made for a console and trust me you can not put Company of Heroes on any system and it be playable with a controler.

It's unfortunate, but you can assign "slots" to your units, however you still don't have the full features of the keyboard.

A console RTS allows for little tactical advancement, and with analog, little tactical control.

the only RTS on consoles that I know of LOTR:BFME II, is a pretty simple RTS, it doesnt have the micromanagement, and depth of PC RTSs.

There is a reason why you cant use a controller on any of the RTS games on the PC.

Because it is a HORRIBLE control scheme for RTS games.

By any means did I note that "I'm a genius of RTS games." C'mon, I know you could do better than that.  Besides,  first imprssions are usually the lasting ones. If you would've read the entire post you would've seen that I don't make claims  of being a genius at RTS games. It's a comparison, and between the two games and their interpretations I think it's a fair and just one as well. I think you could've made your point by not makeing personal attacks, but then again, it is you who is dropping down to that social level. Wait a minute, you must be Urkles' cousin, right?

BFME2 sold like crap on 360 though, if Cnc3 sells badly you can say goodbye to more RTSes on consoles. anyway...playing rts on pad is possible, but it's like playing racing game or a fighter on keyboard

BFME2 is pure crap compared to other RTS's out there. It's a dumbed down non-strategic game really. Try playing Supreme Commander, CoH, or M2TW with a controller.....

Being a long time RTS (Starcraft, Homeworld, Age of Empire, Rise of Nations, etc. etc. etc.) I find it very hard for consoles to get the accuracy needed to make RTS work at the level that I play them (which I guess could be semi competitively). I am a big fan of the Kingdom Under Fire series but it's really kind of a dumbed down RTS. However, I'm very much looking forward to Halo Wars and I hope the AoE team is able to make the game run great on a controller. For accuracy and speed however. . .mixed with multi-tasking abilities; I think KB+M will be the optimal way to play RTS.

Can you do a RTS on console, sure.  Can you run with 10 pound weights tied to your feet, sure.  In neither case is it the best.  Console have several things against them, lousy accuracy, lousy resolution (somewhat better this time out so this one is nearly dealt with), and very limited number of controls.  Accuracy is very necessary for control and speed of that control, and the number of controls is also very necessary for speed, while resolution is better for getting a wider view of the situation without losing detail.  Thanks to HDTV, the last is almost dealt with now, although it will probably chock on higher end games, but the the control issues are still a major killer of making console RTS's more than simply dumbed down cousins of their PC counterparts.
