Rumor: Final Fantasy 9 Remake in development!

Square Enix's calendar for the rest of the year has started to fill out with Final Fantasy 16 shipping later this month and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth set to launch sometime this fall; however, the team is seemingly still hard at work on a few other projects. Originally mentioned last year, rumors have been swirling once again that Square is working on a Final Fantasy 9 remake. On top of that, the recent rumor also speaks to the potential scope of this remake, though keep in mind that every rumor should be taken with a grain of salt and plans often change during development.

The latest churn of the rumor mill comes from Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb who said on his Game Mess Mornings podcast that he heard "Final Fantasy 9 remake is real, that it is real and happening." Grubb would go on to say that the remake would sit "somewhere between The Crisis Core and Final Fantasy 7" Remake in terms of scope, meaning that we probably won't have a trilogy of games that subvert the original story if this remake does happen.

What adds a bit more credence to Grubb's rumor is that the Final Fantasy 9 remake was part of the Nvidia GeForce Now leak that came out last year. Alongside FF9, were games that have since come out or been announced including Helldivers 2, Returnal, Dragon's Dogma 2, and countless others. Again, any leak should be taken with a hearty degree of skepticism, but the Nvidia leak has turned out to be a relatively solid indicator of games headed to PC.

What say you, SW? Do you welcome this news? FF9 may not be my favorite, but I would be happy to see a Remake. I guess FF8 will be forgotten 🙁

I have bounced off the a few times. Every time I make some progress but it just seams to go nowhere for ages. The last thing i remember from it was finding a bunch of clones/copies of one of the characters that looks like a black wizard. I dont know how far in that is or if the game picks up big time at some point.

I mean, it's a solid game that arguably does not need a remake. Graphics, gameplay, story, everything is good. Why remake it?

I would prefer if they remake ff8 instead. Gunblade is such a versatile weapon and could spice up the battle system.

Absolutely. The original is dope (I think), but a full reconstruction of the leveling system would be great. No longer should it feel like the game is punishing you for leveling.

Though it is fun doing run-throughs of the campaign without leveling at all. With right selection of triad cards you can one-shot everything, including optional bosses. Like a built-in cheat mode.

Not high on my most favourite Final Fantasy games but definitely a very good game nonetheless. I would certainly be onboard for seeing a remake of it.

I really don’t care for FF 16, but 9 is one of my favorite games, so yes I would love a 9 remake

I'd probably be down for this if it's just one game. Making FF7 into a trilogy put me off. Not that it's a bad idea, I just don't have that kind of time anymore.

Maybe I am too focused on chronological order, but wouldn't it make more sense if Square finished the FF7 remakes first, then made a FF8 remake, and then released a FF9 remake?

Resident Evil is prob gonna have a remake of a remake soon.

I would love to see these devs actually challenge themselves to be creative and the companies take a financial risk to make a great game.

Even a reimagining- how about try to take a 2D Final Fantasy and make it 3D?

FF9 is a great game, but honestly the PS1 version holds up pretty well. I wonder how they will approach it.

I read that it will keep the turn-based battle system. I'm happy if that's true.

Surprised they skipping to FFIX. They skipped right past:

• FFV
• FFVI
• FFVIII

While I can understand skipping past FFV and FFVIII, how can they skip FFVI? That deserves a remake more.

Excellent news! Though I am a bit worried about where FF8 is... I only played FF8 very briefly only the PS1 (like first couple of hours).

Would love to experience an FF8 remake to the standard of the FF7 remake.

I recently played through 7-15 (skipped the ff13 sequels, ff11 online and ff14 online), and 9 was by far my favorite with 7 being a close second.

If it's turn based sure, if they turn it into another Devil May Cry game... I have no interest at all.

Can't say i care. I would have preferred a remake of ff6.

Classic FF games like FFIX were turn based, and modern FF games are hack n slash games. I don't want the remake to be a modern reimagining if they change the gameplay style.

Easily the best of the PS1 era (not counting Tactics) despite the questionable last act ... hopefully this is true and hopefully they are taking it in another direction thatn FVII Remake, this is not the industrial "ultra realistic" look, this is a lot more fantasy and adventurous.

Why don't they give the first 6 FF games the FF7 Remake treatment? I think that would be really cool.

I have yet to play ff6. Just got it with the pixel remaster.

There is a strong argument for FF6 to get the modern remake treatment. It's remarkable how much personality and emotion Square was able to get out of 16-bit sprites.

I would love to see them expand of the characters and locations in FF6 a la FF7 Remake.

Yeah, they should remake an older one first. Leave IX alone.
