Even before the world knew what Switch was, rumors have persisted about Smash Bros. appearing on the new platform by featuring content from the games on Wii U and 3DS. Speculation has now picked up once again.

Emily Rogers, who has been both spot on and occasionally off the mark with Nintendo rumors, claims that a Smash Bros. games will be announced and released for Switch later this year. Rogers further says that it will include new content as well as re-worked content from the Wii U and 3DS games.

Rogers isn’t sure as to how Nintendo will brand the game. It’s possible that it could be a deluxe edition, some sort of sequel, or a full sequel.

I hope this is not the big game for Switchs dissapointing year 2.

C'mon samus to the rescue.... hope you can salvage this lineup in 2018.

@Litchie: I avoided the 3ds version.

I'll definitely double dip on Smash for the switch.

Can't they update the WiiU version with the new content? It's a nice Smash machine with multiple controllers options. I'm already set up for 8 players Smash parties. I don't want it on Switch unless it's an entire new game.

The amount of people asking for the next Smash to be a brand new game honestly has me stumped.

Smash 4 was the perfect Smash Bros game. To just throw all that away and start again feels like such a waste. Smash is one of the few games that really would work better as a platform. You bring it back, and just add more to it over the systems life. Reworking Mario, Link and all the other mainstay characters every generation really is nothing more than wasted development time that could instead go into bring new characters and modes into the game.

@spike6958: Wow. A Nintendo fanboy justifying ports.

Why bother making any new games at all? Let’s just play Atari games and pong 24/7!

Already bought Wii U and 3DS versions plus DLC and spent countless hours on them. Not entirely new game = no buy.

I'll take a combined port of WiiU/3DS (include all characters, stages, modes, and dlc from both versions combined) this year. Totally worth $60 for me- I only got the 3DS version for cheap, and never bought any dlc.

That said, if they do that, I will still expect a new game (and they better bring back freaking story mode) in the franchise in the next 2-4 years just like I do for Mario Kart. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best Mario Kart game ever, but the franchise will need a new entry on Switch as well down the road.

You can't be this out of touch? oh wait, your a PS4 only gamer... enough said.

The biggest games in the industry are now Games as a Service.

--EDIT--

TC I agree with you, same applies to Mario Kart and many others, these kind of Multiplayer focused games do NOT need full reworks. This would free up resources to get new I.Ps and games on the run.

Dear Nintendo, what will it take for you guys to do a Super Smash Bros. Collection? N64, Gamecube, Wii, & Wii U Smash Bros Collection would make happier then Metroid Prime 4 :)

I might buy it again for Switch since I'm almost ready to put the Wii U in my garage as it is anyway.

It seems like the ideal game to launch with the paid online service. If it is a port, I hope they have taken the extra time to put in a story mode and some new characters. Setting it up as a service is a good idea, consistent with the updates other big games have been getting.

hmmm...

so it will be A port with all the 3DS stuff and all wiiU DLC all in 1 big huge package. umm...i'll be happy if it is just that because i am tired of bringing out my wiiU everytime i want to play smash.
so it will definitely be a day one.

but she says there will also be new content. which means more characters for sure. which would make it the biggest roster ever with the most stages ever.

however...

i was kind of hoping for a new game. also i was hoping for melee remastered or smash 64 remastered with online. the smash competetive scene is dying because of lack of updates. at the very least even if it is a port. there will surely be balance changes and new characters which will spark the smash bros scene.

so, we will have to wait and see what will really be announced either way it is a win for me. finally

You completely miss the point. When it comes to SP game, absolutely make new games. However, when it comes to a game like Smash if you're making a brand new title each time, you're spending a large amount of time just recreating the same content again and again anyway, with the veterans like Mario and Link.

Reusing the assets from Smash Wii U saves a ton of time and gives more development time focused on NEW content for the game.

U will see a lot of ports this generation with the switch, its to time consuming and expensive to make new ip's fast on it. They kinda blew there load already on the first year.

Come on, you don't need a magic 8-ball to see this coming. Even if this prediction came out of thin air, I'm inclined to believe things will play out exactly as she predicts.

I'm inclined to believe Nintendo isn't going to rush out and just port Wii U games, they have to pace themselves I imagine.

Still, not quite on the top of my list of Wii U games I'd like to see brought over. Kind want to see Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 make its way there first, that's just me. But yeah, smarter business sense to focus on the big sellers.

95% of Switch owners never owned a Wii U. It makes sense to port all their AAA Wii U titles as most people have never played them. The Switch is similar to the Wii U in power as well, so it's not like these games are an eye soar. Native Switch games don't look much better.

It has nothing to do with development costs. The Wii U had some great games that no one got a chance to play. They get to sell these games to a huge player base now, so why not do it? It's a win for everyone. Nintendo makes some free money while Switch owners get to play great games.

I loved Smash Bros. For Wii U and would definitely pick up a Switch version that includes all that extra content. Would certainly keep me happy until a new Smash Bros. comes along.

Yes! Because it was a Wii U game, and practically everyone in the community and the industry were very much avoiding Nintendo like the plague. And people (like you) just d***rode off the possibility of them going third party (ala SEGA and Atari) at that time.

I wouldn't be surprised. Nintendo is going full Sony with these remasters.

Except they're just overpriced ports.

I know I would do the same as well because I love that game so much but man would I prefer a brand new one over an enhanced port.

Am I the only one that thought that the last Super Smash Bros. game was by far the worst in the series? That one just wasn't as fun as the older Smash games for some reason, so I'm not thrilled about a remaster of it.

There are better games on the Wii U that I would rather see get a remaster on the Switch, like Mario Maker which would be perfect on the Switch.

I can't imagine they're developing a new Smash game, but are taking steps to merge and rework the 3DS and Wii U content into a single package. I would be blown away if Sakurai (or another team) is toiling away at a new installment in the franchise this quickly.

Nope. I was disappointed by it. I even thought Tekken Tag 2 was a MUCH better fighter for the same system (though it's multiplat), and got ridiculed here for it. However, if they fix what was wrong with it, I'm on board.

Another exception, Sony had success after success, where Nintendo hasn't, especially with it's last console where damn near everyone HATED it.

Just wait for E3 guys! Nintendo makes huge announcements during that time period. Y'all kill me with this! Wants Nintendo to make announcements for major games BEFORE E3, then complain that some E3s are wack. That's what happens when you announce everything before the big reveal.

I know it's frustrating. I'm excited for new big games and want to know when they'll come out, but just be patient.
