i didn't bother reading all the posts, but i can't be the only one that made the association between "xbox 8" and "windows 8", right? i mean, it's pretty obvious when you think about it.BrunoBRS
That is a very old connection/association, as old as this rumor...which is very, very old. It's the first time that connection was mentioned in this particular thread, at least, but there are thousands of threads on this topic on the internet, and probably hundreds in SW over the course of a year or more. That was actually the first reason given for the eight oh, so long ago. However, Windows 8 has released, and now...that kind of thinking seems even more antiquated. Especially since these consoles last so long, and new versions of windows will undoubtedly be released while this machine in on the market, with a name that ties it to an old version of windows.
Suffice to say, if that's the main reason, it's a very poor one. That makes this very old rumor seem all the more fake.
i don't know, 360 is a mouthful and it stayed for the whole gen, even if people just say "three sixty" :P[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"][QUOTE="SolidTy"]
The public won't call it Xbox Infinity or even Infinity over time, it's too many syllables. Some sort of slang will catch on.
Slang will rename it overtime, if that is the real name. I think that's when the one syllable "eight" will kick in, or something else.
SolidTy
;)
That's exactly my point, slang took over. It was no longer Xbox 360, just the three syllable "3-60" (three-sixty) or many times just the two syllable "xbox". As in, "'Scuse me. SCUSE MEEH! Can I get a xbox fo my kidz? Dang, I hate this plase." Thank you for illustrating it so well.:D
You think in-fin-i-ty will catch on?No, I've worked high end and low end retail years back, it won't catch on with the general public. Too many syllables for any product? Slang automatically kicks in. :P
this is the silliest thing I've seen in a long while. people will call it something that is convenient for everyone first. Probably "New xbox" but I don't see infinity being too hard to say. Its more kind of stupid not to mention microsft is running into a corner with the naming. How do you name something incrementally with infinity.[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="SolidTy"]

Merex760
Which is why they won't call it that.
That one extra syllable over Xbox 360...SO MUCH WORK. From a marketing perspective, yes, it is a major difference. They don't just call it whatever sounds cool.[QUOTE="SolidTy"][QUOTE="BrunoBRS"] i don't know, 360 is a mouthful and it stayed for the whole gen, even if people just say "three sixty" :Psavagetwinkie

No one said anything was hard to say, it's about syllables, their power in day to day common language, and slang. It's based on experience with the public, retail, and life. It's also not "more kind of stupid' to "not mention" something either, lol, as if there was a deliverate omission rather than keeping the post short. Strangely, you seem to understand my point because you suggest "new Xbox" as a variation only proving my point further. ;)
All of these rumors and this thread's contents are idle speculation, and none of it actually matters enough to slap labels on users thoughts being stupid and silly. Don't think I don't see your posts backfiring in times of SW past. You are free to post as you have proven you will, and it's okay. Say your piece and be done with it. If I wanted to be disrespectful, I would tell you your post was stupid and silly, and then lay my point down. Why bother? That doesn't make me right now that I trolled before laying down a stupid argument in a speculation thread about a possible name of some product. I would also quote you more often and point out your holes in logic if I was going on that path, which both of us know are many times deliberately done for trolling sake, right? It's true though that Infinity is not future proofing the brand, for future Xbox machines to come along after. Xbox Infinity +1 FTW!!!!
Besides, none of your rebuttal proves anything other than you disagree, you didn't prove me wrong, you didn't back up or cite any experience at work or in life, you didn't prove anything was actually silly or stupid. Why go to such efforts anyways, as the likely outcome of this speculation is pointless? It boils down to just ad hominem boring posts. The new SW, crappy as ever.:cry:
It's fine to disagree, it's your right. It's my right as well. It's silly to call the post silly, when the most likely outcome is that the 720's real eventual name won't in any way be associated with this "infinity" moniker. It's your right to be silly though, so be silly and have a merry day. :P

If the nextbox is called Xbox Infinity I like the ring to that. Would also go hand in hand with Windows 8, visually.
Surely it's supposed to read Xbox Infinite or more likely you're supposed to say it as Xbox Infin8, which is a play on symbol for infinite/infinity but also looks like the Windows 8 logo on it's side.http://www.onlysp.com/2013/02/17/destiny-reveal-may-also-reveal-the-next-xbox-logo-posted-online/
Either "Xbox Infinity", or "Xbox 8"

Your points weren't debated, in fact I told you that the connection was old and at this point well known. I'm sorry that you took the time to post that, but at least I know you are on the same page as me, although I have a much longer lead on how long I've had to ponder that information/rumor. In other words, perhaps you will feel the same way given as much time as I have had to digest the rumor.
I want to reiterate as well that this is all speculation, what comes to pass doesn't ultimately matter, at least to me. The name is the least important variable of an entertainment device to me. I just want to make that clear, I've quote Shakespeare in his Romeo and Juliet in the past to make that point. "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet..."
However, to answer this : "i don't know why this would make anything less likely. it's pretty clear that microsof will...". I answered that with my final line in my last post.

You can see I used the word "seem" because I can't be sure what will happen. Can the company still go forward and do whatever they want? Absolutely, companies make mistakes all the time. It's their product though, they can do what they want, and personally, I won't care. I'll be more invested on the tech, features, and software.
I think it will be called Xbox infinite, as it sounds better than Xbox Infinity.http://www.onlysp.com/2013/02/17/destiny-reveal-may-also-reveal-the-next-xbox-logo-posted-online/

You would think MS would stay the hell away from any sort of Ring after what befalled them for almost this entire generation.
Sorry, I was trying to be nice, so let me rephrase that. Its f***ing stupid to believe that syllabes (unless we are talking about an extremely long word) have any real world impact on naming, it's not hard to say which is more of an impact and shorter naming conventions come about because people can still clearly understand what everyone's talking about. The people selling/designing the 360 are actually educated people and when you work in a place with educated people slang isn't as prevalent as you claim it to be. They don't care what uneducated people are going to call their product.I think your assertion is the silliest thing I've seen in 10.5 years on the nose, to this day. :o  obviously kidding : P

Why should my counter argument need any proof if your assertion doesnt'? Also I'm using "kind of stupid" as a way to describe the name over your assertion it just has too many syllables. So its more "kind of stupid" (oh i forgot the quotes around it but **** why should I care about grammer on gamespot) than it is to9 long to say, because the name of the successor can't be a number any more. Unless they are going to call it lemniscate or have some slogan with "figure 8" in it infinity seems like a name they'll run into a corner with.
Edit: Also you're claim about working in retial isn't evidence. First you can't prove you work in retail, but I'll believe it. Second you made an observation which hardly qualifies as proof, you have no data to back up your claim just a precieved result over an insignificant sample size.
It's Infiniti. Infiniti>Lexus TBH, they're both pretty 'meh'. :P[QUOTE="Shewgenja"]
Personally, I prefer Lexus to Infinity.

I got you where I want you. :P
They do care how the public perceives and receives their product, as that is their target audience that will be buying it, that's the most vital part of the sales equation as some would argue. Gaming isn't exclusive to this idea either, it's hundreds of years old, if not thousands. Internally, they could name the device something highbrow, but many times that won't fly. All these issues inluding name are brought up and spoken about in greater detail that you give them credit for, whether you believe so or not.Educated people would consider the ramifications of a poor name on the market. I understand you feel they downplay naming schemes, but I know otherwise, but I won't be giving any personal information to prove that other than an idea you may want to consider. I also stated above, I don't care, I actually like the interaction with posters more than this particular topic. Whatever they call it, the sh*tbox, my money is already waiting. ;) They can name it the Xbox : Lemniscate of Bernoulli if they desire, but they won't and there is a reason why.I do think Infinite would be a better possiblity (three syllables), but Infinity I don't see. Remember that I also stated they would name it whatever they please, even overriding any arguments. I also said companies do this all the time.
I already said, they can name it whatever they want, but the masses will just rename it if it's too long to state. People want to buy things and leave the store, names catch on, it's the circle of life. If they don't take that into consideration, that would seem contrary to their past. However, I see you felt differently and you expressed yourself accordingly in the speculation/name thread. :D
To respond to your edit : That's my point, too much work involved in speculation if I submit tangible evidence. I realize what I offered was anecdotal unless I give you personal information, but why do so online, or in a speculatory thread for that matter over a product name? That's rhetorical as the answer is obvious.:P
TBH, they're both pretty 'meh'. :P[QUOTE="GamingGod999"]

True... Though a G37xS Coupe is damn sexy.
Infiniti's are the most overpriced "luxury" cars on the market.
Isn't this really old or am I thinking of something else? I know this whole infinity/8 thing has been circling around before. Think someone made a mockup. Oh this turned out to be false. Blog thingie opting to believe some random guy on Twitter who says he heard something from some guy who claimed to be responsible for that image, which is almost definitely fake. So whoopdedoo.McStrongfast
Yes, it's super old. It was presumably new to some stupid kid on Facebook/Twitter/whatever and hence resurgence on an oldie rumor.
