https://www.notebookcheck.net/More-PlayStation-5-Pro-Sony-s-next-games-console-to-launch-with-2-5x-the-performance-of-the-PS5-and-an-in-house-NVIDIA-DLSS-alternative.609356.0.html

New rumours about the PlayStation 5 Pro have landed, potentially over a year before the console launches. Reportedly, the PS5 Pro will feature a much more powerful GPU than the current model and even an in-house alternative to NVIDIA's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS).

According to RedGamingTech, Sony is planning to overhaul the PlayStation 5 family with the PS5 Pro, although not for a while yet. Specifically, the YouTuber asserts that the PS5 Pro will not debut until late 2023 at the earliest. Apparently, Sony may be considering 2024 as a release year for the PS5 Pro too, the PS5's fourth anniversary.

Reputedly, Sony may justify the wait by equipping the PS5 Pro with a GPU that could offer up to 2x performance of the one in the PS5. For reference, the latter has a GPU based on AMD's RDNA 2 architecture with 36 Compute Units (CUs) and 10 TFLOPs of theoretical performance. It remains to be seen how Sony will achieve this performance doubling though, which may reach 2.5x in raytracing tasks. Reportedly, the PlayStation 5 Pro will utilise an updated Ryzen APU based on 4 nm or 5 nm TSMC nodes.

Regardless, RedGamingTech expects the PS5 Pro to be capable of playing games natively at 4K and at higher FPS than the PS5 manages. Additionally, it is assumed that the PS5 Pro's extra performance will improve the experience of using the PlayStation VR2, which could also benefit from a new form of supersampling. Purportedly, Sony is developing an in-house alternative to AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and NVIDIA Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) that does not rely on the new FSR 2.0. Instead, Sony's supersampling will be a PlayStation 5 Pro exclusive.

Wow, what do you think make of this news, SW? You think it's likely to be true?

I'm not saying a PS5 Pro is out of the question, but more likely this is just speculation and/or nonsense from a YTer. Wait and see, I guess.

We are less than 2 years in, and these consoles are showing their warts. Forget 120fps, 60fps is starting to get dicey. Native 4K? Nope. Ray tracing. Not anything meaningful beyond some shadows here and there. Hell, we are still seeing some 20 second load times ffs…

Sign me up for some mid-gen upgrades…

Ps4Pro was nothing else than a meme created so sony could milk you with an additional $400. Never bought it, and don't regret not getting a system that ran 95% of games in the exact same shitty graphical settings, but have access to faux4k. If the PS5Pro is anything like it, there's zero chance that i will even consider it. If its a proper upgrade (and not just a cpu/gpu overclock) and has a solid DLSS-like feature that doesn't look blurry, then that is worth considering.

I am guessing fake just because I doubt Sony would ever want to make another deal with Nvidia ever again.

Also, I don't think they're in any rush for a mid-gen refresh as most this gen it has been production issues that have been the biggest issue. Sure one may come later but I don't think there's a pressing reason to do one yet. No doubt though they have R&D mulling over options for when the need arrives.

Dont think we will get a midget upgrade this gen. We only got one last gen because 4k was starting to take off and 8k is to far off so no real reason for a pro.

Instead of improving the power of the weak PS5, they need to concentrate on making some games that aren't flops.

@SolidGame_basic: meh, nobody cares. The xbox series Y or whatever MS decides to call their refresh will also launch at the same time and likely end up being more powerful. Theres no point even mentioning dsl, since AMD already has their own version native support with FSR.

To the surprise of absolutely no one. PS5 means you choose between native 4K/30 and dynamic 4K(1440p) and 60 fps. or Ray tracing on vs off.

PS5 Pro = get both.

Thing is, "Pro" consoles were needed last gen, because the base consoles were basically GTX 750s at launch.

Not to mention, it's because of the heat output that the PS5 looks like it was summoned by a Power Ranger to fight huge monsters. So before 2024, Sony are going to add 2.5x the power on top of that?

Be lucky to get a PS5 slim by then.

Scalpers everywhere is rejoicing about this news!!

Honestly as long as they still aren’t able to supply ps5 to everyone who wants one, it seems a bit of an insult to think about launching a new console imo!

I honestly think the production issues have thoroughly throttled any plans for mid-gen upgrades.

Slim/Pros hardware revisions come at a time when the console sales need a bit of a boost, and the PS5 (and to a lesser extent Series X) is still so difficult to obtain and not necessarily meeting its sales potential since they can't make enough to meet demand. They even kickstarted PS4 production to help have something on the shelves. Plus, with just a couple of exceptions, there's still barely anything in the way of meaningful next-gen console exclusives, so it's difficult to make the case for next-gen games needing even more horsepower when the potential still isn't being fully tapped and to top it off, Sony (MS) are still supporting cross-gens and why bother revisions when all they gonna do is support cross-gens?

I was considering waiting for a PS5 Slim to jump into this gen, but I'm now not convinced it'll happen for at least another 2-3 years from now and I have a couple of utility-based reasons to own a PS5 in the shorter term anyway, so I've begun actively looking. Hell I didn't bother upgrading my PS4 to Pro, so no chances I would do the same for PS5 Pro anyway.

0 chance of it being 2.5X the power of PS5. You'll be lucky if the PS6 is 2.5X faster than PS5.

At best, the 2.5X figure is the FPS of native res vs. lowest image quality "DLSS".

@HalcyonScarlet: They're owned because the mere rumor of a mid-gen refresh being necessary is dictated by Sony considering those extra teraflops in the Xbox aren't being utilized to produce anything that looks nearly as good as HFW or Rivet and Clank.

Once Sony pushes console tech forward, the industry then follows. MSFT can only sit back and watch.

What? That barely makes sense. So lems are owned because Sony are turning up the milking dial? :-S

Even though, MS will pretty much always come out with the most powerful hardware now they've given up on gimmicks like Kinect, AR or VR.

The last thing Sony needs to be worrying about is a graphics upgrade.

And "mid gen refresh" is a pathetic sounding term.

I agree also. Since the production issues and demand, not many people even have the consoles they want. Id say the xbox Series and PS5 gen just got extended for another 2 years past normal. We won't have mid gen refresh for another 3 years, so 2025, and the next gen xbox and ps6 might release in 2030.

That youtube channel is notoriously unreliable. He just seems to make guesses. sometimes he hits the mark (generally when something is close to launch and several other sources are leaking the same stuff anyway). otherwise he seems to report a wishlist. I blocked him on my youtube account due to the nonsense.

I mean in fairness the specs would be a reasonable guess based on history. like with the PS4 PRO compared to the base PS4, take the PS5 GPU, double the CUs and increase the clocks a bit....TADA....2.5X the performance. it basically already exists: its called the 6800XT. in 2024 they should be able to get to a new node (supply willing) to reduce power usage and heat so it will more than likely be possible to shove a 6800XT in a console in 2024. the 6800XT is not the worst offender in terms of efficiency. its a vast vast improvement from something like a Vega64.

As for the in house alternative to DLSS. it will probably (my guess) be more an alternative to XESS/FSR2.0 rather than DLSS. but researching their own upscaling tech is a perfectly reasonable guess. Sony have their own in house tech and, like Epic, Unity and Co., they will be doing a lot of research into improving image quality when upscaling. industry wide, this remains a big area of research. MS are doing the same thing (and one day nintendo will....implement FSR2.0 on their new Mali based GPU :P).

But its just guesses. i mean if i was making the same video i would basically guess the same thing based on past behaviour and current trends. add roughly 4GB of ram to deal with the bigger frame buffer and have some slightly nicer assets. top it off with the CPU going to 4GHz and that would be my guess for a PS5 PRO. maybe expand the storage a bit as standard and make it easier to put in an M.2 drive.

My guessing done and dusted.

They can barely keep up supply for current demand for the current systems. I highly doubt any of this is true.

Hypothetically even if it was true, what would they sell this for? $800 $1000?

I think they will try getting more PS5's into people's hands before releasing a Pro. The PS5 has been sold-out since it released. People are paying scalpers absurd amounts for the console. I feel like Sony will capitalize on people wanting the base model before releasing a new console.

What if it ran the current quality settings at 60fps instead of 30?

Ps4Pro was nothing else than a meme created so sony could milk you with an additional $400. Never bought it, and don't regret not getting a system that ran 95% of games in the exact same shitty graphical settings, but have access to faux4k. If the PS5Pro is anything like it, there's zero chance that i will even consider it. For an additional $500USD, so that would be $1000USD to run at current settings (which btw have some settings lower than the lowest available on pc and RT support is the definition of welfare RT)? That's a mind fk.

The original system was marketed as 4k/60 with 8k capabilities and RT all over the place, which you were supposedly able to achieve for $400 with the digital ps5. Where its at? 4k was also marketed for the XboneX, and barely anything ran at that resolution. Its just one bullshit after another.

The Pro needs a proper upgrade that you don't need DF or anyone else to tell you because it'd be instantly noticeable. Sony would need to sell it at a decent loss, and as far as i am aware, the Pro, just like the Slim, are made for profit on systems sold. All in all, the system will be sold to milk its fans, and at the end of the day, you paid $1000USD and are still incapable of running most games in 4k, even tho Sony have been telling us that this is the resolution for two consoles in a row.

@hardwenzen: depends on the game, Ratchet and clank and Spider-Man have some of the modt impressive RT out there. But any RT made to run on Nvidia gpu's and slapped on a console is going to struggle.

If they can give you 4k 60 and up the quality if the RT , that's not a bad deal. You can trade your old console for it and probably get it for $200.

Can you tell me where you've seen ratchet and spiderman's rt being some of the most impressive out there? All i remember from DF is that they were saying how low resolution the reflections were in spiderman. I have never heard anyone mention that neither of the consoles have "one of the best" when its RT related. Graphics? Sure. But never RT.
