KOTAKU

According to a report on French site PSPGen, Sony has informed those in the relevant communities that come November 15, they won't be able to order development kits for the handheld any more. Wonder why that would be?

The news reportedly comes via a message Sony Computer Entertainment sent to PSP developers, part of which read:

SCEE will no longer be selling the PSP Development Tool (DTP-T2000A) or Testing Tool (DTP-H2500A) past November 15th. Please order in advance if you require these development units.

We will advise you when a new model becomes available.

Now, if this is correct, it could just mean that new models of the current PSP's development kits are on the way. That's one scenario. The other, of course, is that dev kits for the existing models of the PSP won't be needed when Sony begins sending out those for a new PSP.

You know. The one that still hasn't been officially mentioned yet.

We've asked Sony Computer Entertainment Europe to confirm the message, and will update if we hear back.

Eh, I think people are reading into this too much. I don't think Sony would just stop sending development kits altogether to people who want to develop for the PSP. I don't remember them doing that for PS1 developers before the PS2 was released, or PS2 developers before the PS3 was released.

Most likely the message is saying the truth and the development kit is just being updated or something.

PS1 and PS2 were not such epic failures in the west though to be fair, Sony really need to move their next handheld away from the psp image outside of Japan.

I don't really think 45+ million units (in the West) is epic failure. PSP's total hardware sales isn't really that much lower than the PS1's.

Plus as you pointed out it's doing really well in Japan right now. Either way it's highly unlikely Sony would stop sending out development kits, that just wouldn't be in their interest at all. If they really wanted to cut their losses and run they probably wouldn't be releasing an exclusive God of War soon, which no doubt cost a great deal of money to develop. They would've waited and made it a launch title for the PSP2.

It is viewed as having failed though over here so it would make sense to moev away from the image, it should still have games coming out for it even after the next console comes out I would think seeing as they take their time to make. I will be sticking with my psp until its successor has proven itself a few years down the line either way, but with Nintendo releasing the 3DS soon I am expecting Sony to unviel a new handheld next E3 possibly even with some form of 3D and a touch screen knowing Sony.

Sony is the same company that constantly talks about how a new Sony system hits the market, it's a part of "PlayStation family." They have kept manufacturing their own systems for a decade on each system.
