Rumor - Square/Enix to join Playstation Studios

Rumor mill at it again. This time saying that Square/Enix is looking to be part of Playstation Studios within the next 2 years. I'm doubting this rumor is true but I thought I'd share regardless.

I'm not a fan of all these mergers/acquisitions. It means large swaths of fans miss out. So far, the MS buy out of Bethesda is only affecting me with the Indiana Jones game in the works as I never cared for Bethesda games. Still assuming Indy will not be on PS5 until confirmed otherwise.

If Sony bought Square, then Xbox gamers would potentially lose out on dozens of games including Tomb Raider. Regardless that I have my PS5 and will always be in the Playstation camp, this is not a good practice.

Lems should probably not care, FFXVI is exclusive until otherwise, and the last sold like crap on Xbox.

I seriously doubt that. I can’t see Square-Enix wanting to lose out on that Nintendo Switch base.

Seems like the worst deal ever considering Square already making exclusive for Playstation without Sony funding (Babylon Fall - PS/PC). Dunno how it could even work either other than traditional PS centric IP like Lara Croft and FF IP, DQ is pretty big on Nintendo and that is a good lost of revenue.

Other than FF and Dragon Quest, their AA Jrpg output isnt selling very highly for them on any platform.

Very, very sceptical. Square Enix is worth about $8 billion, while Sony is about $40 billion. One should always keep in mind that total assets is not the same as liquid assets, the latter of which is what companies use to make mergers and acquisitions. Typically, the percentage of liquid assets on hand to total assets of a multinational company is in the ballpark of 10% tops. That means Sony has a maximum of about $4 billion to buy games studios. Square Enix is well out of their budget.

A merger might sound different, but in many ways the nature of the transaction is the same; compensating shareholders, de-listing from stock exchange, transfer of ownership. Still super expensive. Yeah, not happening.

Bethesda has Skyrim and most importantly they have a brand new IP game in development called Starfield. Would rather see Sony buying out Ubisoft for much cooler collaboration.

No kidding. That's not "acquiring", that would be a licensing/publishing agreement. And I find this rumor to be one of the least likely rumors I've heard in a long time.

As an Xbox fan, and gamer who grew up on Square, I couldnt give any less of a chit. I say go ahead Sony. Waste $10 billion dollars on a graveyard of past-their-prime IPs that havent been relevant in 20 years. . 🤣

We are now like 6 US Presidential terms removed from the last good Final Fantasy game.

Think about that. Final Fantasy X (the last good game in the series) predates September 11, the "War on Terror" and the US invasion of Afghanistan.

WWE was still called WWF when that game came out. Windows XP wasnt even out yet when that game came out. Go ahead Sony. This definately makes up for losing f*cking Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield (and Doom, Wolfenstein, Dishonored, and Prey. ) Go ahead guys, show Microsoft who's boss 🤣🤣🤣. You can go ahead and "take" Konami's washed asses too while you're at it. 🤣

I dont even want MS to attempt to fight this. Although, I wouldn't mind MS trying to pick off Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal before it happens, as there were rumors SE was considering selling their western branch assets (ala IO Interactive) anyways, but even if I didnt game on Sony consoles, I could live without'em on Xbox.

Makes sense considering their history. Honestly it does nothing for me but Sony should probably make the move. On the other hand Sony was also rumoured to buy Bethesda.

Unfortunately this is what the games industry has become with the suits in the boardroom filling their pockets at the expense of the gamers, and more importantly, the employees of the taken over company.

It would be just as wrong to keep Xboxers out of playing Square Enix games, should they want to, as it is to keep Playstation fans from playing Bethesda games. At least the Xboxers knew they only had to wait a year if they wanted to play FF7R (although they shouldn't have had to wait a year)

If you want exclusives make your own studios and make original IPs. Don't do the lazy thing and make mutliplatform IPs exclusive just because you want to buy another yacht.

At least Insomniac knew how to pressure Sony to make a commitment, and that was with flirting with their competitors by making Sunset Overdrive, and it worked, they went from having their nipples twisted into making those shit awful Resistance games to better stuff with better funding like Spider-Man, and back to making Ratchet and Clank games, and they are now owned by Sony and not a third party and have job security. It worked. Take note Square Enix.

@lamprey263: sony did come with offers to Insomniac prior to Sunset Overdrive but they refused because they want to stay independent and had been making moves to be multiplat like developing games for multiplats(Song of The Deep), mobiles and Occulus Rift.

From that I guess we can assume the venture failed completely and finally allowed Sony to finally make an offer they can't refuse... also Spidey money.

If Square Enix went PlayStation exclusive, the only franchise I would miss would be Tomb Raider. You can have all of your Final Fantasys and your Dragon Quests. Just let me have Tomb Raider on PC and we're good.

I love Square RPGs more than Bethesda ones. I think their IPs would complement Sony's 1st party more since it could use a dedicated RPG team. Sony already has Ubisoft clones lol.

Never take news stories like this at face value. Any rumors trying to gin up the possibility of a merger or acquisition is by design in order to convey the company's interest to be had to any and all potential suitors.

There are far deeper pockets that would be willing to go after S-E. There are regulatory challenges that any foreign company would have to overcome to make the deal happen, which is maybe why S-E would prefer to keep the company domesticated as much as possible by selling to another Japanese corp., but any company can be had at the right price.

Seems dumb to restrict their sales to a single platform considering how expensive games are to make. They must have made a lot of sales with Nintendo too.

I doubt this is true but if it was and it could bring back the Sleeping Dogs sequel from the dead I would be cool with it.

@Telekill: I hope freaking not since Square and Nintendo have been making nice again, especially recently, in a post N64/PS1 world. MS buying Bethesda and Nintendo doing the same with Next Level already did NOT sit well with me.

But otherwise, this would sadly go hand in hand with their corporate buyouts in their other divisions, like anime (Aniplex - thanks @Jag85, Crunchyroll, and Funimation), as if to remind us they are a still eastern company, nevermind PlayStation focusing on the west.

Square hasn't made anything that has interested me since Final Fantasy X. So, do whatever, couldn't care less.

Square Enix owns a lot of major franchises like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Tomb Raider, Space Invaders, Deus Ex, Nier, Kingdom Hearts, etc. And they own manga franchises like Fullmetal Alchemist, Higurashi, Soul Eater, Durara, Black Butler, etc.

It would be a bigger deal than the Bethesda buyout. But it's probably just fake news.

Square Enix has been doing a lot better and putting games on PC, this is something Sony REALLY sucks at, so they do not even seem remotely compatible especially being that the game that makes the most profit from SE (Final Fantasy 14) gets the lions share of it's profit from PC not consoles.

Bethesda > Square Enix

If anything very likely that FF VII Remake Part II or FF XVI will be PlayStation exclusive before releasing to other platforms
