"Apparently meetings were held during CES to demo a hand-built version of the device to potential partners. We're told that the basic specs of the Steam Box include a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GPU. The devices will be able to run any standard PC titles, and will also allow for rival gaming services (like EA's Origin) to be loaded up."

Thoughts?

Lock if old.

That would be awesome if true. It would probably be something similar to the Alienware x51

Valve has no reason to enter the console scene, especially when Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo are already doing great on that front.

Valve should stick to developing games and making money off of Steam. I do not wish for them to enter an already crowded market full of competition especially with names that have already been well established in that market for years.

I'd buy it, but I don't think they would fare too well.

I just wanted to point out before there is tons of ####posting. It's essentially a PC/console hybrid that would run windows.

It would be a dedicated gaming console that is an open platform.

The big plus for developers would be the lack of licensing fees.

You'd have to remember, "Steambox" would have access to all those PC exclusive games and I'm sure Valve would no longer be releasing future games on other platforms (Half Life 3).

Personally, I think Valve would make more money releasing Steam on PS3 and 360 than making their own system.

They will never make anything steambox exclusive. Whatever you will play on steambox you will be able to play on PC. The device is just a method of getting their service into more poeple's hands. This isn't console, it will be a PC- open platform, with no licening fees and supporting other DD services.

Hardware does not generally make much profit, software does.

Valve gets a 30% cut of everything sold on Steam, that's larger than the $10 cut that Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo get from their licenses.

also this would make sense...

Umm..no. I don't think you understand how it works.

Steam would be direct competition for MS and Sony, on their own platforms. Bascialy it would be like Wallmart allowing Bestbuy to open shopping isle inside their own malls, right next to their own electronic section.

Doesn't make any sense. Portal 3 and HL3 will be ported to consoles anyway, so there's just no incentive to do so.

So your argument is that because they make a larger profit on what they sell they would make nothing on console software sales? As in, there are no gamers who would buy a PS3 or 360 version instead of a PC version?

And MS and Sony would get cuts. They care about money, not about who owns what IPs. And I am talking about the people saying make all Valve stuff Steam exclusive, so if you are maintaining Valve would port to consoles still then we are not discussing the same situation. I am talking about Valve going against PS3 and 360 with their own console specifically, which would make no sense.

And MS and Sony would get cuts. They care about money, not about who owns what IPs. And I am talking about the people saying make all Valve stuff Steam exclusive, so if you are maintaining Valve would port to consoles still then we are not discussing the same situation. I am talking about Valve going against PS3 and 360 with their own console specifically, which would make no sense.SpruceCaboose

No, you might be disussing that with others, not me. I'm just arguing that your "Valve should release Steam on consoles" is completely ridiculous and makes no sense for either Sony and Microsoft.

And with Steambox Valve isn't competing direcly with Sony and MS, because it will not be a console. It will just be a small PC that's TV friendly. Not the first, or even fifth device of it's kind. It won't stop Valve's games from apearin on consoles.

[QUOTE="brofists"][QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"] What incentive is there to ditch the loyal PC crowd who loves personal hardware configs?AdrianWerner

The incentive would be to sell the steambox?

They will never make anything steambox exclusive. Whatever you will play on steambox you will be able to play on PC. The device is just a method of getting their service into more poeple's hands. This isn't console, it will be a PC- open platform, with no licening fees and supporting other DD services.

Awew I see. That pretty much answers that. Thank you for the explanation

[QUOTE="AdrianWerner"]

[QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"] How would games like a Portal 3 and HL3 not make money? Win win for all involved. SpruceCaboose

And MS and Sony would get cuts. They care about money, not about who owns what IPs. your problem is, youve been getting screwed by microsoft one too many times and associate loyalist and generally curtious companies such as Sony and valve with them. think about it like this, if valve and sony work out a deal, sony will be happy to have valves software on their platform, and valve will be happy to sell more software overall. they do it as friendly business, and general curtisy. then you have microshaft. Valve ditched them, bungie ditched them, rare evaporated into oblivion, and soon their user base will ditch them too because they are greedy lying cowards.

Then we are not debating. I am talking to and about people claiming Valve should make their own system and ignore the major consoles, as doing so effectively cuts their market for no good reason.

I own Sony systems, and have since the PSone. You are a fool who thinks I am a troll like you with only one system. I don't care who makes the system. The system is irrelevant, much like the brand of the blu-ray player doesn't change the movie.

That was well put.

Thanks. I have a PS3 and have since launch. Same with 360 and I bought the Wii as soon as I could find one. Only things I don't play are PCs (never liked patches, kb+m, and other stuff) and handhelds (only played at home so never saw the point). I play games, not systems, and I have no false notions that Sony, MS, or Ninty view me as anything other than a walking wallet. They are a business, not my buddy.
