Probably because there are alot of Fanboys saying that the Wii needs one, even though I don't think it does but it could help if the rumours of a Wii demo Channel are true, also with Wiiconnect24 you would need more space soon to save your downloads.

To save all the VC games and Miis, silly! I myself can't wait if this is true. I just hope it will be at a friendly price... It makes sense that Ninty eventually release one though... I wouldn't want to keep using the memory cards.

This is a pretty crazy idea, but imagine if this external HD was announced, and shortly afterwards the VC was updated to include both Sega Saturn games, and also Sega Dreamcast games, aswell. Wouldn't that be sweet?
