- Third-parties studios are currently receiving Wii U "Blu-ray" readers, writers, and discs
- demos at E3 are to be on discs, as per Nintendo's requests
- there was a delay in the shipping of this equipment, which had devs waiting a few weeks
- they didn't came with the latest dev kits
- the latest dev kits still have the disc drive separate
- No confirmation nor denial of 50GB discs capacity
- Wii U units at E3 2012 will include optical drives
- Wii U games were developed on dev kits linked to a host pc (running the SDK, the development tools, etc.)
- it's possible the access/loading times were emulated
- Wii U dev kit sizes have stayed mostly the same during development
- future dev kit versions may have the disc drive included in the hardware

That is probably why it has "Blu-Ray" in Quotations because it has a similar capacity to Blu-Ray but most people don't know what iDensity is so they just put Blu-Ray.

well we knew it was going to be a custom bluray type disc format. Personally I was hoping for a return of cartridges. I have a ps3 and it seems to load things slower. I'm not sure if that's because of bluray or because of the ps3 tbh, but I'm for anything that improves the load times we're enduring this gen.

Which is hilarious because that means Nintendo still wont let you at least watch your blu-rays on it.

That is because of the PS3. Its disc drive is slow. CDs used to be really slow, DVDs used to be really slow, and Blurays used to be really Slow.

the issue doesn't just go away. It would be nice to be able to play blurays but in the end I got to side with Nintendo on this one if it means the console costs a little less and lasts longer

Nintendo spits on 3rd parties once again. Instead of just going with the industry standard where licensing fee is now super cheap and blu-ray discs around few pennies, Nintendo opted to go with a proprietary but unproven format with at best the same specs as blu-ray, but will have high licensing fees and each discs costing astronomical amount to produce and further upmarketed by Nintendo, all of which will be ponied up by 3rd parties because they have no choice if they want to publish games on the WiiU. More reason for 3rd parties to ditch Nintendo all together.

Maybe people would rather have one multi-media device instead of multiple ones. Hell, my first DVD player was a PS2.

then why does the 3ds have all these multimedia functions? because theres is this little thing called convergence "go look it up" Nintendo isn't dumb, they need to keep up with the times, they want you have to have a reason to only have their wii-u in your living room, not a wii-u and a ps4 and xbox 720 "in case you want to watch a blu-ray or a movie or something"

I'm sure most people don't know that sony owns blu-ray and its not something you can put into any machine like dvd drives are.

Woah, woah.... huge misconception here. Sony does not own Bluray. In fact, Panasonic has the largest stake in intellectual property. There are 19 members on the Bluray Disc Association one of which is Apple. People need to stop acting like Sony = Bluray.

If nintendo held ownership of every technology used in their hardware you'd have a point. But they pay to use technologies such as bluetooth, wifi, NFC etc. It's the cost of doing business in the electronics industry. You're going to run into rival companies owning part of a technology that you need to use. Sony pays to use windows, phone manufacturers pay Microsoft to use android os etc. If nintendo plans on selling wii-u at a premium price I expect it to have certain now standard capabilities.

blu-rays are cheap as hell now, if the wii-u did have blu-ray it would be the same price as adding a regular dvd disc drive.

What if you dont like waiting 3-6 months for new releases to pop up on instant stream? Besides wont having netflix go against this "pure" video game system some posters have been rambling about? Sounds more like a limited media device at fully featured media device price.

netflix isn't the only multimedia function of the 3ds, you can listen to music and it has a internet browser. Blu-rays are starting to phase out dvd's but streaming is starting to phase out both of those. Also if you have a ps3, you have a dvd player and a blu-ray player, so i don't know what point your trying to make. The point is just having a machine that only does one function isn't viable anymore people want to have jack of all trades. Like i said, nintendo, sony, microsoft are battling for your living room, the more features and functions the better it looks to people. You think sony cares if people just bought the ps3 just for blu-ray? no they don't, more features and functions more it looks appealing to the average consumer.

Photo viewing, music playback, web browser, nintendos own video service with unheard of artists. Poorly handled functions does not mean they don't exist.

3Ds multimeadia functions are a joke...except netflix...same for wii and its photo viewer

lets see if nintendo want to go multimedia with the wiiU or stay a gaming console like 3ds and wii.

Which is hilarious because that means Nintendo still wont let you at least watch your blu-rays on it.

Chris_Williams
Which is great because that means the system would be cheaper and be an actual video gaming system and not a movie watching one.

blu-rays are cheap as hell now, if the wii-u did have blu-ray it would be the same price as adding a regular dvd disc drive.

Indeed they are dirt cheap. Which is why it's pointless to put it in the console.

one again why woud nintendo pay sony to use blu ray....im sure as hell happy nobody here owns a business

AcidSoldner

I'm sure most people don't know that sony owns blu-ray and its not something you can put into any machine like dvd drives are.

Woah, woah.... huge misconception here. Sony does not own Bluray. In fact, Panasonic has the largest stake in intellectual property. There are 19 members on the Bluray Disc Association one of which is Apple. People need to stop acting like Sony = Bluray.

Thank you, finally, someone posting who knows what they are talking about.

Sony developed it "with collaboration with Phillips" , i don't keep up with who has shares in it. so Sony = Bluray, they created it

No, they didn't. Sure, Bluray's success is greatly attributed to Sony but they were only part of the equation. Educate yourself before you start talking.

your right but sony owns one of the most largest stakes in it, regardless they will still have to pay sony even if it is a minimum price

[QUOTE="bbkkristian"][QUOTE="LP4EVA2005"] i sure as hell care if a "next gen" system that going to cost $300+ doesn't even let us watch DVD movies, let alone blu rays

MFDOOM1983

Yet you can still watch movies; Thank you Netflix!

What if you dont like waiting 3-6 months for new releases to pop up on instant stream? Besides wont having netflix go against this "pure" video game system some posters have been rambling about? Sounds more like a limited media device at fully featured media device price.

we dont know how much the wiiu cost and who said its a pure video game system? nobody cares about dvd playback besides some users here on SW thats not even buying it.

What if? What if I go out and buy a $20 DVD player and learn how to press channel down on the remote. Easy as pie!

[QUOTE="AcidSoldner"] Maybe people would rather have one multi-media device instead of multiple ones. Hell, my first DVD player was a PS2.Chris_Williams

Sony doesnt "own" Blu-ray, and it IS something that you can put into any machine like DVD drives are:|

They are ONE member of the Blu Ray organization, and they get royalties........

..........just like they did with DVD and Compact Disk. :|

I believe it was either Iwata or Reggie who said the console would be expensive(more than $250). ZombeGoast and demopan 7 both made references to wii-u being a "actual" video game system. The highest usage of netflix viewing comes from wii, so there's obviously a market that wants to watch movies on their nintendo console. Having dvd and blu-ray playbook would just give those consumers more options for their movie viewing needs.

All-in-one media devices are/are becoming standard now. No reason for devices with a disc drive not to accept standard media formats.
