This might be old, but there is a rumor floating around that Sony will be doing a $100 price cut in the middle of August, just before Madden 2010 is released. We have not heard any confirmation from Sony on this, so right now it still stands as a rumor. Here is the story anyways from www.gamezine.co.uk .

PS3: Industry says price cut needed; expected in August
The gaming industry wants a PlayStation 3 price-cut and insider news reveals that it might be coming this August.
Many were somewhat surprised that Sony didn't announce a PlayStation 3 price cut at E3 2009, though others knew that Sony would be revealing this and a PS3 Slim at the Tokyo Game Show later in the year. Still, a number of video game publishers have commented on the console's current price point.
"[We're] disappointed," Sega America's VP of Marketing Sean Ratcliffe told IndustryGamers. "I just think it must be hard for Sony to balance three live platforms – that's not something Nintendo or Microsoft have to contend with."
"I think from a platform point of view, we would like to see Sony sell more PS3s. It's good for us as a publisher. We think it's a great [machine] and that for consumers, if they hit a sweet spot with price point that would bring more consumers to that platform. I think because of the success of PS2 people were automatically expecting PS3 to be the natural successor, and that actually really hasn't happened yet."
"We need as many consoles out there as possible so our games [can sell to a larger installed base] so I hope they do something on price, especially in this economy," Ratcliffe continued.
"It's really tough. I was talking to some of our counterparts in Europe and I think in Spain the unemployment rate is going be around 20 per cent by the end of this year. And so it's not just the console itself; you have to invest in the TV and so on. I think Sony needs to recognize that and hopefully do something about it this year."
Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard told Bloomberg that he "was disappointed not to see any sort of aggressive price cutting. Of all the things that the hardware companies need to be doing right now, it's recognizing the difficulties of the economy and pricing their hardware appropriately."
Retailers also agree, with GameStop's CEO Daniel DeMatteo commenting:
"The hardware price points, where they are right now given this economic environment, are too high. If the platform holders are going to make the numbers that they've forecasted for the year, those numbers will have to change."
However, it is now rumoured that Sony is planning a $100 price for the PlayStation 3 this August. Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia reveals:
"Industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden '8/18' and the start of the back to school shopping season. This will naturally be a positive for the industry."
"The industry is alive and well. While software sales for the first half of 2009 are expected to be down mid-single-digits, we believe the second half, in contrast, will likely be up 10 per cent to 15 per cent driven by a robust line-up, easier comparisons and potential price cut(s)," concluded Bhatia.
