Arkane's studio in Austin (Prey & Redfall) are working simultaneously on two different titles right now. Redfall we already know about, but they also have a smaller team working away on a sequel to 2017's Prey. The project spawned from an experiment developed during an internal game jam they held in 2019, and since Microsoft acquired Bethesda it has picked up significant traction into an actual game. Microsoft are very eager to see this sequel developed just to expand gamepass and their platforms with more high quality titles that might have not performed as well otherwise.

The game is a shorter experience set (mostly) on Earth after the post credits scene of the first game. Project Cobalt, AKA the typhon organism injected with Morgan Yu's cell lines is the player character. It is said to have a "Deus Ex like structure", featuring open ended urban levels with a set of main and optional quests given to you by the few remaining human survivors. This time around, there is a larger pool of alien enemies, to combat a recurring criticism of Prey 1, but, there are also fewer neuromod powers to play with. They are, however, touted as being much more "creative and experimental" the ones in the first.

Excellent news if true. Prey 2 need to be happened sooner than later. with plenty of immersive sim coming next year. Prey 2 should release after redfall.

Deus Ex like structure is incredible thing. set on earth means it may be spritual successor to Half life 2 like how Prey 1 is successor to system shock 2.

Interested in Prey2 if the enemies design is different and there's more than a tiny amount of shitty weapons that feel like toys.

Yeah it's weird how the same Microsoft that didn't want Alan Wake 2 would want a Prey 2.

Doesn't make sense, still this news would be fantastic if true.

You can play through the whole game with hacking, who needs weapons when you can look like this saviour of humanity:

I actually want to use weapons in a first person game. When i did, they felt like trash. Level design is the only thing i enjoyed from the first game.

The fully upgraded shotgun was very powerful. Gunplay certainly wasn't the game's strength, though.

Sounds good. Immersive sims are better than unimmersive sims, that’s for sure.

I miss Deus Ex games.... Have yet to play one I didn't enjoy.

Such a good formula of story, environment, stealth, gunplay. Love being immersed in that world.

Problem have with Prey, has all these mechanics and depth, clearly trying to hit the high notes of LGS, but it's like watching dance without the music to accompany it. Very hollow experience.

Not really problem with have LGS titles. Even their antiquated graphics add character.

I just bought Prey on the Steam sale Arkane bundle. I have yet to play it, but it's been mentioned multiple times here on the forum so I figured id give it a go.

Talking about music: Prey and Quantum Break are in this weird style where it's this electronic music that gets layered gradually. eg. more layers when there is a battle or a fight going on. But both games were very hated for using that style.

Anyway about the game itself: I dunno, I can see it has flaws, but honestly the game grabbed me from the intro right until the end. Same with the two consequent playthroughs.

The enemy design isn't the best, but they are still menacing.

The gunplay isn't the best, but just like Half Life 2 that's not what the game is about.

It's all about the setting, the player agency and chosing your own path like in an RPG: what attributes do I pick? How do I tackle this next situation?

Games like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry have upgrade paths too, but they don't matter. Every single encounter plays out the exact same. While in Prey every playthrough and every situation can play out differently. Like I said: hacking is an option, or using the glue gun to reach hard to reach spaces. I've skipped over so many battle encounters in Dishonored and Prey.

Set on Earth? I thought the space walks and zero-G moments added to the sense of exploration. So none of that, shorter game... I'd rather they not juggle shit and devote the time they should into a proper meaty sequel.

That’s very good news. I only played Prey earlier this year on my XSX, after hearing about the FPS boost, it’s a fantastic game.

It actually reminded me of Half Life but modernised.

Interesting if true.

Prey 2017 was one of the best games to come out in the last decade. Arkane Austin fucking rocks. Kings of the craft.

apparently a very polarising game. dont think i've ever tried as hard to like a game as i did with prey. it's like going to fancy restaurant and ordering a dish with ingredients you love but when the dish arrives you don't quite like how they've been combined. it's not bad but it's not anywhere as tasty as it should be. more interested in prey 2 than redfall, but after deathloop similarly missed the mark arkane have slipped from the pedestal i had them on after the dishonored games

Still think it was dumb to use that name..... I mean, it kinda fits, but also the other game exists and it's misleading.

Deathloop was Arkane Lyon. Not the same team that made Prey or Dishonored. They pretty much act independently of one another. For example, the Lyon team didn't even play Prey until it was well into development.

@pyro1245: i've just noticed it explicitly says arkane lyon on the deathloop box. and dishonored games and prey have arkane studios. didn't realise they distinguish themselves from one another like that

Arkane Prey is immersive sim. and thats what we want. more and more immersive sims.

One of the best games of last generation IMO.

The best thing about the MS Bethesda deal + GamePass is that there is a new wave of people all of a sudden just discovering that Prey 2017 is 🔥🔥🔥

Sounds intriguing if the rumor is true. Prey's space station was brilliantly designed so I'm eager to see Arkane take on a post-apocalyptic Earth environment.

I don't mind at all if the sequel is a shorter experience than the original. Not every game needs to be X times bigger than is predecessor like most developers promise. Quality > quantity.

Brilliant game and for anyone with a Series X, the 60fps and fast loading times make a huge difference.
