As the title says there's a rumour MS is preparing to buy Valve/Steam for $16 billion buckaroos (all cash purchase)

Can you imagine how much better Steam would be if MS owned it?

Highly unlikely. Valve was created by former MS employees who wanted to get away from MS. They go against MS by supporting Linux and making Steam OS. They also highly value being a private company and doing whatever they want.

I don't think they can afford it, or that valve will sell.

I think I would prefer MS to leave the gaming business instead.

Wont happened. Valve is billionaire distribution (not game developer) company.

MS is a trillion-dollar company, which the last time I checked a trillion > billion.

I'd rather MS buy Steam and then force hermits to pay for online play, it's not like hermits can go anywhere else with ALL their games tied to Steam, and besides they won't go to Epic lol.

I hope this is not true. The last time I've checked, Valve are doing very well and offer the best service for PC gamers. I'm envisioning Microsoft f-ing that up if they were to own them. Competition is a good thing and no-one in their right mind wants any company to have a massive monopoly on any industry.

@BassMan: Gabe still works at Valve, but the other co-founder Mike Harrington has been long gone. So Harrington is out of the picture.

Plus I don’t believe Gabe hates Microsoft, nor did he want to escape from there. To my knowledge, Gabe played the original Doom and was impressed enough to feel video games might be the future of entertainment. That’s why he wanted to start his own gaming company. It likely wasn’t that he hated Microsoft.

Only $16 billion? I feel Valve is probably worth five times that amount. I have spent enough money buying games and in-game transactions on Steam to propel Valve way past the $16 billion mark lol.

Interested in buying =/= buying.

Doubt this will come to any fruition. FTC will chop this down in an instant.

@pclover1980: Why would the FTC prevent this? I thought people like you said Steam was a non-monopoly? If that is the case, then Microsoft buying Steam would be a non-monopoly too.

Because it's still a corporation buying another corporation lol

Anyway, this won't happen in the near future anyway.

This is exactly why the **** they don't need to buy Steam. If you think Valve has a hold on the PC market now, MS will definitely find a way to pour shit on it. Do I believe they'll make a play for it in the future? Yes. Because they bombed out in the console market, so trying to get a headlock on PC would be the next step

Pretty much. Valve's closest competitors on the PC side are Microsoft (Gamepass) and Epic games store. Valve does have a monopoly but, the last time I've checked Microsoft have got waaaay more acquisitions than the other 2. So, IF they were to purchase Valve just imagine how big their monopoly would be.

Wow man that’s the second rumor in a row you’re commenting on without any kind of confirmation. It’s almost as if you only like talking about the ones that might be positive for MS.

Not happening, because this type of rumor already happened in the past anyway and got debunked big time! Valve/Steam makes billions from doing nothing and Gabe Newell has said they won’t ever sell out, that's not how they operate.

And besides, the source is an old document which is no longer relevant. Funny thing is, back when this rumor pop up, Gabe wasn't aware of MS trying to buy them and if that's the case, he was never gonna do it.

Edit: Now however, MS can buy EGS right under from Tim Sweeney, that I wouldn't have any problems as EGS is losing money big time.

I find this extremely unlikely simply because it's such a low ball offer based on roughly how much Valve makes any given year and they could easily make more money by going public.

can't see it. if gabe was really money motivated he'd have floated steam a long time ago. can't see him wanting his life's work guzzled up by the company he left to form valve.
