you do realize it is, more or less, everything that GTA used to be, right? GTA4 is nothing but a brown-fest with boring chore friends and boring missions they took out all the fun minigames and replaced them with, OH BOY, watching TV and browsing the internet

Uhm, no. All the previous games were actually good and enjoyable games, SR2 feels like a game that no polish or care went into it. Well, if your definition of fun is **** on walls, there's nothing I can do. And please don't compare SA or any other GTA game with SR2, they derserve better.

Would you rather want the series to evolve and mature or just have it still use its last gen gameplay formula? I for one enjoyed playing pool, bowling, darts, and the overall realism of the game. I think it kills the last gen GTAs by a mile. It's a more well made game than SR2 by miles and that's a fact. And if GTA4 is a brown-fest, then I don't know what to say about half of the games that have been released this gen.

For me, they are both awesome in their own ways. GTA IV, more down-to-earth and realistic and SR2, cartoony, lewd and very immature.... but GREAT fun. IV's multi is better than SR2 by miles for sure. IV and SR2 overall have a great story and interesting characters. If you like customizing characters, SR2 is your ticket. So in short, they are both kick ass games that will provide many hours of fun. I have both, so I'd buy them both. GTA came down to $40 so that may sweeten the deal for you. I'd wait for SR2 to come down in price before you commit. Hope this helps :)

haven't played SR2 but.. GTA4 can get sooo boooring. missions are all the same, go here kill that guy, go there kill that guy, etc... and free roaming isn't as fun as it used to be. even multiplayer gets boring... hype is the only reason it scored 10/10. my score would be 8 or 8.5 but no more mich check out SR2 later on...

Fun Factor, Variety - Saints Row 2 Everything else (gameplay, gunplay, graphics, production values, story, characters, humor, environment, and the little things that stick with you and you cant let go)- Grand Theft Auto IV I used to think SR2 was better (read my review lol) but after i finished, the package as a whole just turned me off, i couldnt go back to playing it. GTA IV just never gets old for me, and Lost and Damned is a welcomed addition to my addiction :P

Story, polish, and presentation go to GTA, but in terms of gameplay (cooperative), humor, and customizability, Saints Row 2 is a blast. I made my character look EXACTLY like me... easily the best character generation tools I've ever used. And playing with a friend... how do you beat that? I hear people say that they don't like the lack of a cover system, but the human shields allow for mobile cover, which is great. Plus the shooting mechanics just feel better in SR2.

(BTW, that's my SR2 charachter as my GS Avatar. I can't ever get my funky lips to look right with most editors. I made myself look a bit angry so that I'd fit into Stillwater a bit better lol.)

Grand Theft Auto 4. Easily. Saints Row Doesn't hold a candle to GTA so please don't do do the franchise a disservice by comparing Saint's Row to it. People keep saying that SR is what GTA used to be. That's because they've (Rockstar) done away with the cheap humor and moved on and evolved as a Series. Instead they put an emphasis on the character and how the world impacts him as opposed just running around and throwing poo on people. Without the more grim undertones of the story characters like Brucie wouldn't stand out as much, or riding in formation and ambushing a rival's club house wouldn't have you so immersed. I for one am thankful that the series has taken the turn it has and can't wait 'til we see where they take the next one.

GTA has always been the better series and GTA IV is no different. But I had fun playing SR 2 and the coop is good times.

SR2 lacks the polish that GTA IV has and there isn't a character in the game that I gave a damn about, although I felt Johnny was better than he was in the first game..

90% of this gen is nothing but browns and grays, it seems like most devs forgot how to make vibrant worlds in their attempts to make everything HD

But the game IS fun. It's your fault that you were expecting the same over the top action that was in the last GTAs. IMO the dark, realistic tone the game had made everything much more believable, and more satisfying when you raise havoc, or just crash into somebody. I don't see how the game is bland, especially when Saints Row 2 is nothing more than a GTA ripoff.

Also, where do you see all brown in this?

YOu obviously don't know what Saints Row is a bout. Its not about being believable, thats the whole point. Its an over the top action game. And satisfaction is subjective. I found SR2's gameplay MUCH more satisfying.

GTA IV is a game about Nico and Roman, Roman calls Nico to go bowling with girls from time to time

Saints Row is a game about YOU and the saints gang that YOU hang with, the game is about what clothes, music, cars, friends YOU have
its also about mindless humor without excusing itself

I really enjoy how one can visit comedy clubs and have Ricky Gervais do stand up for you but all in all even with GTA IVs prettier graphics I'd havta go for saints row 2 :)

exactly, i don't see ANYONE in GTA4 running around in a super villain outfit, in a matching APC running any and everything over that dares get in your way, with an army of ninja henchmen at your disposal do you see anyone in GTA4 doing that?

Are you seriously dissing how Liberty City looks at night? To each his own, but I personally find that flying a helicopter around in the evening is one of the most gorgeous things I've seen this generation. It's the artistic style you don't like, I suppose, but you've got to admit they've got some solid tech going for them.

Saint's Rows' humor is made by 12-15 years old for 12-15 years old. I felt my intelligence insulted by SR's "humor". I would take more serious tone of GTA 4 any day. And Nico and Johnny will eat every wanna be gangsta in SR for breakfast.

Actually, its ALOT like the first lol, but the graphics managed to get worse IMO :( But they added alot of things that made the game fun, i just couldnt get over the lack of polish after i beat the game, at least not enough to play it again. Never had that problem in GTA 4.

I'm in the same boat. The first SR bored me, it felt like a chore to complete. There were some things I didn't like about GTAIV (like the annoying phone calls from friends) but it's easily the better game overall. Co-op is a plus for SR2 I suppose.

Co-op is fun, but only the "mercenaries 2" kinda mindless fun. Its way to easy because the A.I doesnt scale to adjust for 2 human players, to me, its more fun without it. Its way overrated IMO, and the multiplayer has nothing on GTA 4. The game was fun though, all the activities made it fun, but the story missions, like you said, felt like a chore to complete. Its definitely worth a rent though, if only for the flaming ATV :P

GTAIV is a much higher quality production. The amount of detail they were able to cram into that game is amazing. I'm still hearing and seeing new things. And I much prefer the way vehicles handle (and break) in GTAIV. And the feel of combat, although it handles rather clumsily. And the writing. Graphics... ...everything really. Saints Row 2 is still fun though. The character customization is great.

gta iv a brown fest? saints row 2 on the pc has some of the worst visuals of recent times and would have looked dated 5 years ago, its not fit to lick gta iv's boots, infact you can argue a modded san andreas looks better.

as a game its fun but just so messy and unpolished, the driving in the game is god awful, so bad its actually quite funny. a lot of the missions are just recycled mission concepts gta games were doing years ago. gta as a series has moved on from that and for me the more serious tone of gta iv with the emphasis on story and character was a welcome direction change.

gta iv, despite some faults, wins hands down for me

Ugh...complaining about GTAIV's art direction is just wrong. Especially when you're a proponent of Saints Row 2. "It's brown and has no color." is just such an asinine argument. It is also an untrue one.

Grand Theft Auto takes the title of polish, but easily wins in the boring and repetetive and been there done that category.

From Fuzz to good old Mayhem to actual missions, Saints Row 2 has way more variation on gameplay, and the customizability is something GTA can't boast. I've beaten Saints Row 2 myself and then once completely coop with my brother and we are now starting it again.

If GTA 5 or whatever the hell they are going to call it plays like 4 I'm not going to even bother. Being artistic is great, but being art house schlock and forgetting about the game aspect is something Rockstar is not quite comprehending.

I'd go so far as to say that Saints Row 2 has the best co-op available on consoles. Seriously... if you played GTA IV and said "I can't wait till GTA 5 with Co-op", stop dreaming and get Saints Row 2. I picked up my collector's edition recently for $20 at Circuit City... they had lots of them.

[QUOTE="404-not-found"]GTA IV, I don't understand how people can play that piece of garbage called SR2.shadow_hosi
you do realize it is, more or less, everything that GTA used to be, right? GTA4 is nothing but a brown-fest with boring chore friends and boring missions they took out all the fun minigames and replaced them with, OH BOY, watching TV and browsing the internet

It is a watered down version of what GTA used to be. A version that has been watered down to pure trash as far as I am concerned. Grand Theft Auto IV was a much more immersive and exciting experience. Sure, if you are a kid you might have had more fun with Saints Row 2, which is the case with people I know, but that is all. I am speaking from experience, not speaking about you personally, so do not freak out.

Say what you will, but Saint's Row has a better shooting system in my opinion. And I'm not a kid... I'm 32. Not that I took it personally >:(

Why are we worried about the graphics, for all GTA IV is, it looks amazing.
[QUOTE="donalbane"][QUOTE="shadow_hosi"]http://www.onmilwaukee.com/images/articles/gt/gta4/gta4_fullsize_story1.jpg where do you not see the brown in this?shadow_hosi
That's the ambient lighting... it's dusk. It only looks like that for a minute or two till it segues into evening.

and then everything is gray, i see a pattern here.....

...a pattern of your ignorance.
