Sales matter. They dont equal quality, but they matter.

Sales determines preference, popularity, where the market is spending their money and their focus. If people say thats not important then somethings wrong.

In the event of the fierce PS3/360 rivalry, I think its very important to note that most multiplats sell better on 360. Now im sure cows play down sales and say:

quantity /=/ quality

I play games, not sales

Offcourse......we all play games and we never admit that sales = quality. The point is merely that one system is more popular then the other in terms of where the market is heading.

And like it or not, that means something.

games sell on 360, they dont sell on PS3. That's the bottom line for developers and that's the reason why PS3 is a bad investment for them

I am sorry, but the 360 selling more games only means it has more consoles in that region. In japan PS3 sales are better in terms of software. The most popular system is the Wii. owver most of teh games it sells are first party.

Of course sales matter. If wii didn't have sales to defend it's mediocre library then it would be a bigger flop than the Virtual boy.

How is its library mediocre? I find it quite decent. Just becaue it gets a lot of shovel ware doesn't somehow destroy the good games it already has.

No they don't matter. The blockbuster hardcore games are still only to be found on 360/PS3/PC. It's not like Fallout 4 or MGS 5 are going to Wii. Shovelware sales, so Wii will simply get more shovelware, and that's it.

Sales only matter to the company doing the selling, it doesn't matter to the consumer.

360 sells more not because of multiplats or game selection but because they're cheap as dirt, any kid with an allowance can afford one.

Systems that don't sell also don't sell software in great enough numbers to get equal dev support. They also tend to turn into expensive paperweights deep into gens as devs abandon them. So no, more than just fanboys should at least care a little bit about sales.

The only time sales matter in my case is when a system you buy gets short lived because of poor sales like the Dreamcast.

This is the one argument that really makes me mad. When people say "I play games not sales" thats is almost total BS! GeoW 2 comes out this week and people who buy it don't care if it sells millions, but they really do. Lets say GeoW 1 sold 100k copies. You wouldn't be playing GeoW 2 this week, then you'd care. So they majority of the people who can't wait for RE5 can thank the people who bought RE4. So you may not realize it but when your sitting down playing MGS4 you ARE playing sales and how a game sells DOES benefit you.

Actually now the only reason the 360 is outselling the PS3 is because its cheaper. Before the price cut PS3 was outselling it all year. And recently for a short amount of time, Ps3 software sales went above the 360s. Sales only matter if the game is online because then you want people to play with.

Im an analyst. Attach rate / Game Sales are the driving factor behind the 360s sucess. The game sales / attach rate are like a giant bowl of Honey.. everyone can only hold out so long before they wants a piece. Do we need a better example then Square Enix? System sales definately matter less then game sales. In the end, its game customers that developers are selling to, not unplayed consoles. Casuals are HIGHLY OVERATED!

Sales determines preference, popularity, where the market is spending their money and their focus. If people say thats not important then somethings wrong.

Sales mattering less this gen? How did you come to that conclusion? Sorry, I'm a little slow today or I have not been paying attention at all to statistics.

In previous gens, the losing consoles usually experienced less dev support, the worst of which came at end of gen or even earlier (e.g. Dreamcast, Xbox). I don't think that the "losing" consoles (PS3, 360) are in danger of suffering that same fate, or at least not to the same extent. As a "for instance", I don't think that 360 is in any danger of all of it's game support just drying up in 4 years (which would be this time next year) as happened to it's predecessor... do you?
