All system sales tell us is who is dominant in the market and generally this should only be a concern to the company. Sure good system sales could mean money for exclusives but other than that no reason. The only gamers that argue over sales are fanboys.

Things that should be focused on are good customer care and developers looking out for there fans interests.

A good example of this is microsoft. Im gonna go a length to say their trying their best on the console side of things but on the PC side of things where windows is blatantly the dominant OS: Even being the market leader do sales really matter that much when people seem to resent you and almost seem unified against you due to (apparently I would'nt say I'd know) terrible customer care and the monopoly of the market really is'nt helping their case.

If sales is all that matters then MICROSOFT PWNS! (yes and nintendo on the console side of things) but if good customer care and developers looking out for there fans interests is what matters lets change the focus of the argument then hey?

They should matter to some extent, if your console of choice doesn't sell then there will barely be any good games for it. I personally care more about game sales, if a game that i really like sells a lot then i'll be happy cuz i know there's going to be a sequel, if a game that i really hate sells a lot then i'll be sad because there's going to be a sequel :(

To an extent I can agree with you.. But seeing as how Consoles are so expensive nowadays, If you can't afford all 3, or your 2 of choice.. etc.. It's good to be aware of Sales numbers. I didn't care for numbers back when Sega was here, bought a Dreamcast only to be left in the dark, the console died and I was too young to buy a new one so I had limited games. So I don't frown upon people who base their decisions on #'s.

As a devoted gamer, i'm interested in as many gaming related things as i can be. I don't just play games, i read about them, i talk about them, i think about them.. sales are an important part of the industry, and they are interesting. They also play a role in a systems future. The game with the highest amount of sales doesn't equal the best game, but it does have an impact(we saw this with Trauma Center on the Wii, and hopefully the sucess of the two Resi Evil games will lead to more resi evil support on the wii).. but, sales are very important to consoles, and to the winner of the generation.

Yeah, because sales don't affect how many games a console gets.

I said money for exclusives thats basically the same as money for games. I basically recognised that the money for good games and support from developers when I said exclusives, fine detail either way it all comes under the same pile. If thats the only argument point you guys have then you fail.

Sales are everything. If something doesn't sell, it won't be on the market. If it sells poorly, it will be cut back and downgraded. All companies are in business to make money. If a console doesn't sell well, it won't getas much support as a console that sells well. I don't know why people keep saying that sales don't matter.

Interesting yeah, I like to see games and companys I like do well too. But when people start putting sales over customer care and fan support whats it coming too. People keep going it matters because of dev support and such (which I did mean to implement with the exclusives bit) but be honest? When people are argueing about sales are most of them really thinking about that, no because most are fanboys and thinking is'nt something they need to do :P

Nope, sales sure dont matter. Look at the PS2. everyone knows that devs put games on the PS2 because it was clearly the most powerful and very easy to develope for.

OK FINE sales matter in relative terms if they are to low because that will effect dev support, new games and overall the copanys future but all I was trying to get across is people are putting sales over customer care and fan support.

System sales don't matter? Tell that to the unfortunate souls who bought a Saturn, Dreamcast, 3DO, Jaguar, Virtual Boy, and others. These systems all DIED because they had no SALES. If you were to have had only one choice to purchase a console and you chose one of these...you'd be screwed. Sales are one of the most important things.

I read the first post, but fans should care, because the consoles with the mosts sales almost always get the best third party games, and I dont know about anyone else, but I care about getting the best games.

i agree with you but i dont think that sales are a measure of a console because the wii as far as i know is doing very well however it isnt suited to me i dont enjoy it. Thats why i dont think sales a a good measure of a console i think you should judge it by the amount of good games and how much you enjoy playing it.

Perhaps I should have made clear its not that fans should'nt care at all. If all your favourite games are obtained as exclusives by some company with crap customer care some may argue that makes there console good but due to crap customer care that certinley does'nt make their company good. Im just saying we should support companys that have good customer care so are favourite games are'nt taken hostage.

Yeah I realised what I was saying :P what I really want people to get is that if we support companys with good customer care than are fav games (and hopefully fav devs suport) are going to the right platform. Good sales does'nt mean good customer care and microsoft is living proof (on the OS side of things).

Tell this to people who owned a Gamecube or a Dreamcast. Both were good systems, but how much better would either have been had they sold more and had more third party support and more games made for them.

Developers are in the business to make money first and foremost, and sales = money.

uh gamecube would of never had anymore 3rd party support anyway nintendo chose to only let minimal amounts of 3rd party games be developed for it.

I owned a gamecube, windwaker and sms made it worth it. As for the dreamcast Id imagine jsr and sonic and other random stuff would have made it worth it. But yeah you probably would'nt want to own just them at the time. But even though the gamecube did'nt do to well the fact that I felt nintendo were releasing games that catered to their fans made me feel valued as a customer (a rather sad sentement I know) but with the wii I felt as though fans are just getting dragged along for the ride (I know not everyone feels like that, so dont troll we dont have to go into that).
