Bad news if you were hoping Sony would follow Nintendo and bring 3D technology to the PlayStation Portable line. Speaking with Sankei Biz, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai downplayed Nintendo's 3DS goggle-free technology, citing its lack of precision as a limitation.

In an interview conducted at E3 on the 16th, Hirai told the site, "Based off internally conducted research, naked-eye 3D for portables does not have high precision, and at present there are limitations."

Hirai would not issue a comment on the 3DS itself, stating that he'd yet to see the system (this was on the second day of the show). However, he apparently gave the site indication that Sony does not intend to pursue naked-eye 3D technology for portables.

Expectedly, given the focus of Sony's E3 showing, Hirai's stance was different for PlayStation 3's 3D tech. "With such things as a strengthened 3D-compatible software lineup, we aim to increase hardware sales," said Hirai of the console.

Hirai also seems excited about PlayStation Move, which saw final release information and pricing announced during E3. "It allows for high precision movements, and has become a product with appeal."

Siliconera

Limitations or not the 3DS will sell like the Wii+crack.

Thoughts.

I would've thought that with the big 3d emphasis for the PS3 that the PSP2 would include it. It doesn't really matter though as long as the games are good. Plus, competetors will never complement one another.

This is what they usually say before copying their competition. They bashed the Wii too at some point and look what they're doing now. Still expecting a PSP 3D in the near future.

Expected but at least he didn't outright bash it. Sony should leave the handheld market (PSP did well all things considered.) and focus on the console market. No one will ever beat Nintendo at handheld gaming they are the best and developers will always go to them first. As for 3D, I don't care about it period. The 3DS and its games look awesome but I personally am I gamer that doesn't care how something gets done as long as it does. I won't be playing beyond regular gaming going into 3D because I'm not paying the money for glasses and a 3D television.

Leaving the handheld market just because Nintendo would beat them in sales is completely stupid. If Sony is making a profit there is no reason for them to stop producing handhelds.

Psp go vs. 3DS. 3DS wins by miles. Better graphics, touch screen, now with also one analog stick, 2 cameras outside 3d pictures, can watch 3d movies, better gaming lineup, and if you get headaches because of 3d just switch to 2d with slider. Kaz hirai is damage controlling.

I feel sorry for people who impulse purchases psp because of marcuspsp "step your game up" commercials :D :D

If Sony doesn't implement it people complain. If Sony does implement it people complain and accuse them of copying Nintendo. It's a Catch-22.

Adjusting the 3D effect is a seamless, subtle act, with the depth of the 3D images -- think of it as a tunnel reaching into the top screen -- slowly reducing to 2D as you move the slider down. We had a look at several demonstrations, including a selection of Nintendo characters (think Smash Bros. trophies) in different settings. The Pikmin blended into the grass, Yoshi's nose seemingly protruded from the screen and black particles surrounded Link, almost appearing to float in front of the top screen. - Joystiq

That's why it's the real future, in a few hundred of years we will probably get there. Fake 3D on the other hand is just a distraction for gaming and cinema, a mere fad that never dies (with or without glasses).

I was mostly speaking from a gamers perspective (I mentioned it did well, selling 70 million is a good thing). The PSP for the most part for gamers is a failure. It started out as a port and remake machine and only gets a sprinkle of actual new games in a established franchise or a new IP when a developer decides to take a chance and deal with things like piracy. Nintendo will always have more developer support then any other company in the handheld market because of their track record. As far as Sony releasing a new handheld I doubt it would even do as well as the PSP did.

A lot of niche/obscure Japanese developers develop for it instead of the DS, and if Sony plays their cards right they might move over to the PSP 2.

I haven't seen the 3DS in person yet, but from what I've seen of larger glasses-free screens the tech is "not-quite-there-yet". Generally they were grainy-looking, and didn't work very well at all unless you stood in exactly the right spot. Obviously the second part isn't such an issue for a handheld, since you can just hold it at the right spot in your hands.

False because you can't actually interact directly with the image that you're seeing. On a technical level it's the same principal of fooling your eyes, however VR by nature is about simulation and naturally is a lot better means.

That is a small market most gamers don't care about Gust / Hitmaker / Nippon Ichi etc.... and so forth. Those games also sell best in Japan so, on a worldwide scale what good does that really do the PSP and will do for the PSP2's success?

You know what this means? Sony will make the LCD in their next portable system compatible with active shutter glasses, instead. That would make the PSP the cheapest member of their "3DTV" line.

Yeah, I agree. I don't want the main focus of developers to be the 3D aspect of games, instead I would wish for more content and gameplay. 3D might make games more shallow than before if it gets crazy. Devs would focus on making the scenery stand-out in 3D, rather than placing emphasis on plot and gameplay.

I don't think you know what you're talking about. PSP games are great for handheld gamers who would like a console like experience on the go. 70 million people bought the handheld so they could play games like MGS and GOW on the go or at home. People like the game. It's true PSP doesn't get a lot of support, but there is a lot of good games on it.

I could also say the DS is a failure for gamers, because most of the games are shovelware, JRPGs, gimmicky games and somehow they made two zeldas on it and both turned out to be terrible. People only bought the DS because of nostalgia, the gimmicks and hey, it's nintendo! "I have to buy everything thats nintendo."

The feel is definitely reminiscent of those 3D cereal box prints, and as soon as you turn the device from left to right to try to look around anything the effect is immediately lost. You need to stare at the screen for a moment for your eyes to adjust and then not move around too much. If you do you'll need to adjust again. But, stay reasonably still and it's a compelling effect. -engadget

Well most previews of the 3DS were pretty underwhelming in terms of the 3D-ness of the screen. I'm pretty sure the the 3D with glasses looks better than the 3DS's 3Dmunu9

Well, technically a bigger screen is better than a smaller screen. You can't actually get the same effect as the theatre or giant screen in a dark environment on a small screen... at least that's how I look at this issue from a non-professional stand-point.

Um, what? Most previews were really positive. Where are you getting this from?

"Off-axis viewing largely negated the 3D effect; there seemed to be a dead zone if you moved your head slightly to the side, but the 3D effect came back into focus (but not looking nearly as deep) as the screen was angled further away. " -cnet I think those are the "limitations" sony is talking about

Sony are way off base if they think 3D games will shift PS3s.

So the viewing angle being somewhat narrow suddenly means it's underwhelming?

Most previews of the system have been positive because it's awesome and has an amazing lineup of games already. Most comments on the 3D ability have been pretty underwhelming though, saying it's not really 3D but just a little different to normal screens.

Leaving the handheld market just because Nintendo would beat them in sales is completely stupid. If Sony is making a profit there is no reason for them to stop producing handhelds.

Sorry, I have extensive libraries for both over 200 games for each and the difference in quality is like night and day. Yes, the DS has a ****load of shovelware so did the PS2 and it's probably the best system of all time. I was only a casual Nintendo fan until the DS and it's still the only system of theirs I have a real above average liking for no nostalgia. Alot of people buy the PSP for illegal means which I can't mention or for it's multimedia potential. The PSP's liibrary has vastly improve over the years but is nowhere close to being as good as the DS's. The 3DS will further that gap now that it's graphics has surpassed the PSP (one of the few things it had over the DS) and it's technology is seemingly more advanced.

[QUOTE="munu9"][QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="SaltyMeatballs"] 3DS has a popping out effect. Hands ons have said this.

- Joystiq

-engadget

I played some DS the other day just to see how much I moved it, and very little, almost no movement. I don't think that will be an issue.

Links? If it's not really 3D, then a lot of people have been straight up lying. This must be quite a cover-up.

So, one advantage to not using glasses-free 3D is that games could be designed to take full advantage of a near-HD high resolution LCD display similar to the iPhone 4's, rather than rendering 400x240 images for each eye as the 3DS does.
