SCEA VP Wants More Content On Disc, Not DLC

Rob Dyer says only on-disc content ensures "100 percent of the users are going to get it."

Rob Dyer explained why he wants to see more content going on discs and less sold later on the Internet.

"That way, 100 percent of the users are going to get it. 100 percent," Dyer said. "What are we, north of 70 percent [of PS3 owners] on the [PlayStation Network] now? 73, I think. Microsoft probably the same... [That's] still a significant number of people that aren't able to get [it], whether they don't have broadband, whether they just flat out can't get on the network. Whether or not you do it, they're not using it. I want it on the disc, that way when they buy it, they get it. So, if I can do that, that's great."

I'm DEFINITELY okay with not Paying for DLC whether on my new disc or not, so that's a good thing. :P

I support this... sadly it won't happen now. If Sony starts to regulate this and make it mandatory, many devs will jump off the PS3 ship.

Most DLC is not done until after the game is completed. So does he want games to be delayed six months or more to get DLC on the disc. :?

But his arguement is lost if its online multiplayer content.

I'm sick of content being left out of games just to sell it to people later on.

He's talking about DLC that comes out the door with the game. How are you supposed to add DLC released 3-4 months down the road onto the disc? You aren't. You're just trying to find something to piss and moan about because you don't like Sony.

Huh? What's wrong with those endings? HR did a prequel DLC that got a 5.0 here....but that's not about the ending. UC2 DLC are mappacks/costumes/multiplayer modes :| GoWIII ending...maybe they are leaving room for another game?? I know it's PR talk, but at least try to make some solid statements.RavenLoud

Seriously guys, how hard is it to understand this when we've had news about some game with DLC already planned to launch on the very same day as the game?? Or games with "DLC" that unlock features already on the disc??

He's not complaining about the concept of DLC as a whole, if you read the interview. He's complaining that the actual content being sold has to be downloaded, and is thus inaccessible to people not on the internet. "Whether or not you do [DLC], they're not using [DLC]. I want [DLC] on the disc, that way when they buy [DLC], they get it. So, if I can do that, that's great."

Basically a Blu-Ray plug. (edit: also a vote in favor of EA's old 'buying content already on disc' strategy)

It's called a GOTY/Gold edition... apparently Sony's execs don't pay attention to the industry, or they expect the other 70% to pay $50 for content that was previously DLC.

I don't know who that Sony guy is but I automatically love him. Although I'm sure having the space of a Blu-Ray disc helps back it.

Rob is now my favorite VP! I don't mind DLC, but it seems like it is becoming the norm to have a game hit the market, only to have DLC available @ launch?? Couldn'tthey have put that content on the disc? Oh thats right, then they couldn't have ended up charging us 89.99 for the game! I know we don't have topay for it if we don't want it, but what happens when they start making these games shorter and shorter, but with plenty of DLC to pay for? We'll be hooked thats what. All the praise goes out to this guy forletting his voice be heard, and someone with a lot of power at that.
